Apple Tree Yurt sits in a glorious location on top of PenHill on the Haldon Hills with far-reaching views over the Exe Valley. The traditional yurt sits on a bespoke wooden base with a veranda for watching the light fade or the sunrise. Just down from the yurt lies a private fire semi-circle with seating looking out over the farm below. Cooking is over the open fire with dutch oven and BBQ grill, or on the wood fired stove top in the yurt, which also has a small oven. Cooking facilities including pots, pans, crockery and cutlery are provided. Facilities include compost toilets and bucket showers with water heated over your own fire. Whilst there is mains water on site, there is no hot water - all water must be heated over the open fire or on your stove. Wheel barrows are available for moving any belongings you wish to bring, the 150m up the hill from the car park to the Yurt.  There is no lighting on site so please bring torches.

Response from Sunrise Camping at Penhill Farm

Hi Om. Thanks for this - glad you guys enjoyed your time with us.

Awesome location heart-warming hosting

Totally nature immersive experience of glamour glamping! The tent was magically set for us, it felt like we were in a private state alone, enjoying the views over the outstanding natural beauty and even over the river Exe Estuary, better still we saw the sunrise from the cosines of our bed. We felt rather at home with old friends than mere weekenders. We treasure these memories and would gladly come back again!

Enchanting site welcoming hosts

Amazing location with awesome views over the area of outstanding beauty and even the river Exe's stuary. The bell tent was magically set for us and hosted by heart warming attention on every aspect of the glamping experience. The sunrise was there, for us to watch from bed ! We felt secure and among old friends, specially when we volunteered for little farm chors, like potato digging :-) No rush, no frills just a relaxing experience we all enjoyed. A place we would gladly come back to.

We had a wonderful long weekend staying at Penhill Farm, I wish we could have stayed longer! The shepherds hut was so comfortable and cosy, we slept extremely well. The views were incredible and we were treated to a fantastic sunrise on the last day, just stunning. We will certainly be back, might try the yurt next time! Thanks for having us!

Blissful off grid recharge

Loved our stay in the shepherd's hut! Can't imagine a finer place for a morning brew. Breathtaking views over the exe estuary. Stars and quiet at night. And only a few pedal strokes to haldon forest. Simon and Kate were fantastic hosts. Showed us everything we needed, making us welcome, but leaving us to enjoy the space.

Getting There

From the A38, come off at the Exeter Racecourse Junction and head north for a mile towards Haldon Forest Park. Continue on the same road past the park for another one-and-a-half miles passing the Haldon Belvedere (a white hilltop folly) on your right and the turning to Doddiscombsleigh on your left. Keep following the road as it bears right at Penhill Cross (signposted to Exeter). The entrance to Penhill Farm is on your right about 100 metres further down the road. Continue down the drive, passing house on your right, until you reach the house/reception at the bottom of the drive on the left.

The nearest train stations are Exeter St Davids or Exeter Central. You can also get off in Newton Abbott if you’re coming from the south but the taxi fare will be higher and there’s no public transport option. From Exeter, bus number 360 from the city centre will drop you at the end of the drive. Ask for a ticket to “Penhill Farm at the top of the hill above Dunchideock”. Alternatively you can take a taxi for about £20. Those who make it by bicycle will be given a 10% discount but be warned – it’s quite a climb out of Exeter!
