A pair of super-luxury shepherd's huts in the rural Culm Valley countryside, where good walks and welcoming pubs abound

It seems fitting that this brand new Devon glamping site, set in the hedge-ribbonned countryside of the Culm Valley, plays host to two thoroughly modern shepherd’s huts. After all, on the edge of the Blackdown Hills AONB, this is traditional sheep farming country through and through. Yet, just as, today, the agriculture has modernised – tractors work the local fields and sheep have been usurped by horses (you can even bring your own on holiday with you!) – these shepherd’s huts are anything but old fashioned.

Each accompanied by its own private hot tub, the huts offer a wealth of space inside, with a king-sized bed at one end and luxurious en-suite bathrooms that feature powerful showers and a beautiful slate-tile finish. There’s under-floor heating throughout, a wall-mounted digital television beside the bed and a classic wood-burning stove, so you can lose yourself staring into the flames on a rainy day. For an extra extravagant touch, both huts also have the shared use of a wood-clad, steamy sauna, shaped like an over-sized barrel with its glass door peeping out across the meadow setting. You can also book in-house 'pamper packages', including massage, facials and manicures.

If don’t have a horse to bring with you (there’s stabling, turnout and guides to show you the best bridleways), then you needn’t worry. The local footpaths weave their way to the nearest good pub or, from the village, along the banks of the tiny River Weaver, which eventually joins the Culm and runs all the way to Exmouth (a half hour drive away). There’s a fishery in the village, too, for keen anglers, while a visit to the beach or to one of the national parks – Dartmoor or Exmoor – is all easily achievable by car. Return via the traditional town of Honiton and pick up some locally made cheeses from the market. It'll be the perfect addition to your evening pizza... cooked in your hut's private pizza oven, naturally.

Huts are individually designed to have their own ambience but both feature underfloor heating, wood burner, hand-crafted kitchen area with full size oven hob and fridge, LCD TV, king-sized bed, en-suite shower room, and bedding and towels provided. One hut also has 2 single bunks, while the other has a double sofa bed. Each hut has its own private hot tub, firepit BBQ with pizza oven and outdoor dining area. There is a shared barrel sauna. In-house treatment and pamper packages available, including massage, facials, manicures and pedicures. Guests can also bring their horse with them for an additional charge, with stabling, turnout and guides for the local bridleways provided.

Suitable For

Glamping only. So no campervans, caravans or tents. Well behaved dogs welcome (1 per booking; additional charge) and groups welcome to book both huts.

Dreamhuts Retreat is right on the edge of the Blackdown hills AONB and offers excellent walking (and mountain biking if you bing your own bikes). The traditional market town of Honiton is well worth a visit – the market is held along the wide High Street of this historic lace town every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday – while it takes just over half an hour to reach the cathedral city of Exeter (and the same amount of time to the nearest beach). Closer to home, the local bird of prey centre (3 miles; 01884 277297) is a novel attraction where you can try your hand at falconry. For history, try the National Trust-owned properties of Killerton House (7 miles) and Knightshayes Court (16 miles).

Food & Drink

Pre-order luxury welcome hampers, breakfast hampers and tasty BBQ hampers before you arrive at the site or check out the local pubs. There are three great spots within a 30 minute walk. The Keepers Cottage Inn (1¼ miles; 01884 266247) is closest, while Broadhembury (1½ miles) is home to a delightful tearooms and a good village shop for essentials, plus the second pub, The Drewe Arms (01404 841267). The third good local is the Wyndham Arms in Kentisbeare (1½ miles; 01884 266327) where there is also a village shop.

All year.

Family Friendly

It's 6 miles to Diggerland (08712 277007), the popular, digger-themed theme park that's "bucket's of fun" and 4½ miles to an award-winning family attraction called The Bear Trail (01392 881780), where you can take on a long and often muddy adventure course.

Perfect place to unwind

We arrived on Monday at 3pm and a few minutes later Michelle brought our pre-ordered Hampers. The contents was definitely luxury. The huts are clean, comfortable and well equipped. Having unpacked we popped the Champagne and relaxed in the late afternoon sunshine in the hot tub, whilst our 2 labradors lay on the grass in the piece and quiet. It was just what we needed to recharge our batteries and didn't feel the need to go anywhere. Matt and Michelle are an absolute delight and are on hand if needed. I want to tell the world how beautiful Dream huts are, but also part of me wants to keep this hidden gem secret, but hey we aren't selfish and everyone needs to go there. Thank you so much Matt and Michelle

Perfect getaway

We needed a good staycation after months of non stop working and what a place to have it! The location is fantastic with local pubs in easy distance with food to drool over. The hut is beautiful and makes it better it has a private hot tub. The dog thoroughly enjoyed all the space available to him. Would highly recommend, the owners were lovely!

Relaxation personified, a fabulous place to escape to!!

We stayed 4 nights and could’ve stayed forever!! The hut was beautifully presented, spotless and just as described. Michelle & Matthew were brilliant hosts, Michelle had made a cake and put banners up for my 50th Birthday which was a lovely surprise. The views are stunning with every sunset watched from the hot tub whilst drinking fizz!! Thank you, we will be back xx

Had this booked since December and due to COVID kept getting rescheduled. The owners were amazing with contact and quick to answer any questions we had right up to our visit date. We ended up celebrating my birthday here and although the weather wasn’t our friend it didn’t stop us having a lovely time regardless, thanks to the cosy hut, the sauna and the hot tub. We even went in when it was raining 🤣. The sunny day we got we visited one of the close beaches (30 mins) Sidmouth and enjoyed a lovely vegan lunch in town. When we got back we made use of the pizza oven and watched the sunset from the hot tub. The washroom is beautiful, the whole thing is kitted out so well and furnished beautifully. The underfloor heating was an absolute treat and our dog absolutely loved this!! I’ve never known her nap so much. We had a meal at the Keepers Cottage one evening too and that was a stunning meal. Beautiful place too and only about a mile walk. Thank you guys for making it so easy to have a birthday that was relaxing and stress free - especially after all this COVID business it was just nice to get away and not think about anything but enjoying our time there.

Fantastic and Relaxing

Loved our stay there, the hot tub was just magnificent with the view at night. The cabin was clean and very tidy, and the best was just, the comfiest bed I've stayed in. Thoroughly recommend.

Amazing. Just amazing.

Every part of this mini break was incredible and that was largely down to the attention to detail of The Shepherds Hut. You can tell that the owners have thought through every little part of the accommodation and facilities. Everything you could possible need and want was provided. We booked to recharge our batteries over half term and found that this was the perfect way to do it. The log burner helped bring a coziness that made the evenings fly by and the hot tub brought relaxation to a new level. We will be recommending this to everyone we know and we can’t wait to try it again in the near future.

A much needed Retreat to recharge and reconnect with ME

From driving up on site, to leaving two days later, the whole experience was perfect and amazing. The attention to detail and the cleanliness of The Shepherds Hut, the Hot tub and the Sauna were second to none. Everything you could possible need and want was provided. I ordered a Welcome Hamper to celebrate my husband's 70th, the contents were superb and very good value for money. Hand delivered by the owner along with a homemade birthday cake, a lovely surprise and a very kind and thoughtful gesture, one which was really appreciated. The peace and quietness of the site, the amazing views across the countryside, the beautiful local walks all made it feel as if I had been on holiday for a week rather than two short days. We will definitely be recharging our batteries there again before too long. Thank you once again Helen

Lovely site and great hosts.

We booked the whole site for a weekend so 3 generations of the family could stay at the same time and we all had a wonderful time! The adults loved the facilities and wonderful views and the children loved the space and seeing all the animals in the surrounding fields. Host were also great and we would definitely visit again, although we may wait until our two are a little older as the sleeping arrangements would better suit school age children.

Beautiful Location

Dreamhuts retreat is a fantastic rural destination to get away for a romantic break. The location was perfect and had plenty of things to do near by. We definitely recommend the shepherds hut to all friends and family.

Great Holiday, Fabulous Accommodation

We stayed for 6 nights in Shepherd's Rest and the hut was fantastic for the four of us. The hot tub is a touch of luxury and the hut had everything we needed for a weeks stay. Matthew and Michelle are great hosts and Matthews' recommendations for things to do and the beaches were well received! Had a couple of lovely days at Sidmouth and Beer. If you want a relaxing break then the huts are well worth a visit!

Lovely hut with hot tub

We stayed in Shepherds Rest, the hut was the perfect size for small families and everything was designed to make the best use out of the space. We loved the wood fed fire and private hot tub. The view was amazing and the owners were lovely and helpful. Plenty to do in the area although some of things we would have liked to do were closed for winter but we had an amazing meal at Bickleigh Mill, visited Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary and Haldon Forest Park. We would definitely recommend the accommodation and area and hope to come back in the future.

Amazing getaway!!! 5*

Fantastic little getaway! As described and much more :-) Lovely views from the hot tub and the sauna was an added bonus along with the dressing gowns!! Everything had so much thought put into it with the fudge and milk left for us and tea. Was lovely and clean and everything was in the lodge that was needed!! The nearby beaches were amazing. Such clear waters during paddling boarding with active escape adventure. The fire burner was also an added extra that made the lodge that bit more special. Thank you very much! Xx

Idyllic romantic retreat

The brand new hut was exactly as described, facilities excellent and the wet room was impressive, with a super comfy bed. The views over the fields were superb, and watching the sunset from the hot tub brilliant, as was the visit to the sauna. We had a lovely BBQ on the fire-pit on two of the nights with the well seasoned wood supplied by Michelle and Matthew, with some left over for the wood burner inside. We spent a really nice day exploring Beer beach, quite close by, and Exmoor is not much further. Already planning when we can visit again!
