Loveland Farm

UK England South West England Devon Bideford

Bright, modern and über luxurious, the luxury pods and tipis on this eco-conscious North Devon are the very essence of glamping

Having toured the world as hotshot designer duo Griffin, fashionistas Jeff and Karina decided to trade in the glamorous world of haute couture for the simple pleasures of rural Devon. And what a spot they found. Nestled between the undulating hills and wild North Devon coast, Loveland Farm is six acres of pastoral paradise. The smallholding's 19th century farmhouse and ancient out buildings are today home to your wonderfully accommodating hosts and their design studio, plus six uniquely designed, geo-dome ‘pods’ into which they have poured their designer flair.

The Popla Pod sleeps two adults and is perfect for those wanting their own exclusive getaway, the Welcombe Pod sleeps up to four in a bright and spacious dome, while the mammoth Eden and Hartland Pods sleeps six apiece. These two, larger, abodes even contain gorgeous handmade tipis inside, which act as the master bedroom. The pod with the title track, however, is the Loveland Pod: Bright, modern and über luxurious, this geodesic glamping dome sits atop raised decking with views of the meadow below and the sea beyond. Fitted with a designer's eye for detail, the pod comes with a king size bed and two spacious sofa beds, comfortably sleeping six. You'll find a wood burning stove for extra cosiness, plus a host of other mod cons – in the Loveland and Hartland pods, there's even a projector for your own private movie nights. All pods have their own adjoining kitchen cabins with eco loos, large showers and fully equipped kitchenettes.

The very largest dome in the collection is also the newest; the Stargazer Pod, which also has an adjoining cabin to maximise space. Located at the very top of the farm with the best views, the pod and cabin combo offers three spacious bedrooms and an open living and kitchen area, all with the same level of attention to detail and stylish design. Think wooden floors, Edison bulbs and well-placed ceiling panels so that you can stargaze from inside. The dome has ample space for rolling out one of Loveland Farm’s yoga mats and taking a little time to unwind. Just to keep themselves busy, Karina and Jeff also have a trio of beautifully finished tipis. Plotted atop wooden decking and furnished with rugs, double beds and wood-burners, these Nordic-tinged tipis offer camping with a luxurious twist. Tipi tenants have access to all the little extras that really make a stay at Loveland hassle-free, including a communal kitchen (with wood-fired pizza oven), designated shower rooms for each group and award-winning compost loos.

Loveland Farm isn't purely about the sartorial though – there's substance behind the style. Jeff and Karina are passionate about sustainability. In keeping with tradition, the Griffins have a veritable menagerie of animals onsite including pigs, sheep and even a pair of Asian Water buffaloes (Bella and Shaggy) who spend their days beautifying in the stream at the bottom of the field. The entire complex is run off solar panels and they grow their own veg, rear their own pork and lamb, smoke their own bacon, make their own sausages and hope to even get milk and make mozzarella from the aforementioned water buffaloes. Self-sufficiency indeed.

If you can drag yourself away from the farm, the local area is brimming with great day trips. The Hartland Peninsula is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a stunning array of unique flora, fauna and marine life. The historic fishing village of Clovelly is also worth a venture. Traipse its charming cobbled streets, drop in at the Charles Kingsley museum and visit the famous working Clovelly donkeys.
