A bell tent site with unique tents, yoga sessions, forest feasts and local music, a ten-minute drive from Lyme Regis

It’s no exaggeration to say that we’ve never seen anything like Maju Glamping before. That’s because this boutique site on the Devon-Dorset border is populated with 12 bell tents of the owners’ own design. It’s being set up in a field on a farm that will be welcoming glampers for the first time in 2021 and the weekend crowd will have access to chilled music nights and supper clubs in a neighbouring 300-acre wood. All this, and the place is less than a ten-minute drive from lovely Lyme Regis.

This breezy and somewhat bohemian dream of a campsite is being conjured up by young couple, Liberty and Felix. They love this part of the West Country and they want to show it off. You can book yoga lessons or life drawing classes with local practitioners on site and, if you’re here for the weekend, you’ve got a treat in store. Slip through the gate into the neighbouring woodland and wander through the trees to find local musicians tuning up for low-key gigs on Fridays or long trestle tables laid up for Saturday’s forest feast (make sure you book your place in advance). A bar from the Lyme Regis Brewery is a staple at these events which aim to bring community and campers together to enjoy the woodland setting.

It’s only the lucky few who get to stay here though. If you’re one of them, you slip back through the secret gate to Maju’s bell tent glamping haven. Situated in one of the highest points in Devon, it offers views across farmland to the sea on a clear day. You can choose an unfurnished bell tent or a luxury one with beds, bedding and furnishings. Either way you’ll notice that these darker bell tents offer a different feel to many; patterned fabrics, scalloped edges and increased headroom are part of their custom-made appeal. Ultimately, though, despite the luxury tag, this is a fairly simple site. There are a couple of flushing loos, a couple of hot water showers, and an outdoor washing-up sink.

The real luxury is in the site’s added extras and its extra-special setting. It neighbours Hugh Fearnley-Whittingtall’s River Cottage HQ and shares the same lovely location. If you want to eat (or learn about) sustainable food, you’ll have to book far in advance but it’s not far to Axminster where the more accessible River Cottage Deli serves seasonal, daily deliciousness just right for a picnic to take to the beach. The closest place to reach Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is also one of the best and most popular parts; Lyme Regis with its cobbled streets, historic harbour arm and choice of beaches. If you can’t decide which one to visit; ask your campsite hosts or neighbours at the supper club. There’s nothing like local knowledge and there’s plenty of that here.

There are two flushing toilets and two showers on site as well as a washing up sink. Standard tents are rented unfurnished while luxury tents include a double bed with bedding, fresh linen, side tables, lamps and rugs. Campfires are allowed in off-ground fire pits which are available to hire on site. There's also a communal marquee is used for yoga sessions and life-drawing classes (if booked). On Friday nights there is often live music in the forest and on Saturday nights there are regular Forest Feast supper clubs by local chefs and there's a bar from Lyme Regis brewery on site for both.

Suitable For

Glampers only, families, couples, groups, pets – yes. Campers, campervans, caravans, motorhomes – no.

The cobbled seaside town of Lyme Regis is less than five miles from site. Take a stroll around the Langmoor and Lister Gardens or take in the sea views from the beach or the historic harbour arm, The Cobb. Monmouth beach is a short walk away where you can see an ammonite carpet when the tide is out. Mackerel fishing trips are available from the harbour or, for something more exhilarating, join Lyme Rib Ride (07790 400300). There are fossil-hunting trips from Lyme Regis Museum (01297 443370) or from the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre (01297 560772) a couple of miles down the coast. A little further away, but recommended by your hosts is Seatown Beach which has a good pub (see below) and a strenuous but rewarding walk up to Golden Cap. You can walk over the cap to the unspoiled beach of Eype and catch a bus back to the Seatown (buses are every hour so be sure to check the timetable). Tunnel Tree Tops (07776 508106) award-winning high ropes adventure course is less than five miles from site.

Food & Drink

On Saturday nights, you can wander through into the trees to find the Forest Feast Supper Club events being put on as part of the pop-up. Local beers are on offer throughout the weekend in the same place from the Lyme Regis Brewery's pop up bar and there's a Camp Kitchen for breakfasts in the mornings at the weekend. River Cottage HQ (01297 630300) is right next door though you'll need to book well ahead if you want to get involved in any of its course or dining events. A little further afield the River Cottage Deli and Kitchen in Axminster (four miles from site) are also great places to try or buy sustainable, fresh produce from the farm or, just outside town, try Millers Farm Shop (01297 35290). For local wine, try Lyme Bay Winery (01297 551355), eight miles from site. There are plenty of recommended options in Lyme Regis including The Cobb Arms, (01297 443242) and The Harbour Inn (01297 442299) while Monmouth Pantry is a good place to stock up supplies. For a real treat and a taste of the sea, book a table at Mark Hix's Oyster & Fish House (01297 446910. Over in Seatown (10 miles away) The Anchor Inn (01297 489215) is a lovely spot for lunch or dinner after a bracing walk on the coast.

Lovely, relaxing, friendly glampsite

Lovely unique campsite with very friendly helpful staff, we had a great stay enjoying wonderful views and sunsets from the comfort of our futon in the porch and food cooked on the fire. The toilets were very clean and cool, the blocks were all homemade out of local logs and there was even a communal kitchen including a fridge and cups, plate, cutlery, etc. Thanks for a lovely relaxing stay!

Spacious, clean and great location

Me and my family had a lovely couple of days at Maju last week. Loads of space, great facilities in terms of washing and also lovely dining and lounge areas. Beds were sooo comfy! Staff were very helpful and friendly too. Super location too with many great beaches and villages to hand. Recommend 🙂

Lovely tents in a beautiful setting

We were here for two nights and had the forest feast (now on site not in the forest) on the Saturday night. It had rained heavily before we arrived so couldn't actually get up to the site to begin with but there is an alternative less muddy route if it's raining and your car isn't 4x4, which was fine. The hosts were great and doing all they could so rectify the situation. The tents are lovely and there is so much space around them that you can't hear your neighbours. The view is beautiful and there are lambs in the field next door. The forest feast on Saturday was fun, meeting the other campers and having a few drinks from the bar. I think if it had stayed in the forest where it was originally advertised it would have been too muddy so much better (and easier to stumble back to the tent) that it was onsite. There was also a wonderful singer during the meal which was a nice surprise. Showers and toilets all clean and plumbed in like proper bathrooms. There was a fridge and toaster and kettle in the communal marquee along with sofas and places to charge power banks. The only thing that could have made our stay better would have been better weather!

Brilliant Experience, Lovely People

We spent a long weekend at Maju celebrating a 30th Birthday. We had a wonderful time, the bell tent was very spacious, the bed ridiculously comfortable, the location was perfect with stunning views and a quick drive to the beach. Liberty and Felix couldn’t have done any more for us and where constantly on the go all day. The toilets and showers where spotless and very cleverly designed. We had a great weekend, thank you both very much!
