Romantic, luxury glamping for two in a quiet Devon valley, well-placed for making the most of the South West

“The heart of the countryside” may sound like your average travel writers’ cliché but stick a pin in the middle of a map of South West England and you’re likely to lance upon Jacob’s Hut. In Devon, but near the Cornwall border, and almost equidistant from the north and south coasts, this rural glamping retreat for two really is a splendidly central spot. Throw in its 10-minute proximity from Dartmoor National Park and a handful of speedily accessible National Trust properties and it’s easy to see the appeal.

Yet for all the on-the-doorstep attractions that this shepherd’s hut offers, it’s actually the feel of backwater seclusion that makes it stand out. In the bottom of a valley, down a private track and tucked among a handful of mature trees, Jacob’s Hut is a place for couples to get away and enjoy the quieter side of the South West.

Inside, the hut sleeps two on a built-in double bed, with the whole place warmed by a wood-burning stove and lit with tea lights and candles (think rustic, ye olde ambience). Outside, meanwhile, the shepherd’s hut door swings open to reveal a view across the reed-dotted pond and up to the steeple of Thrushelton Church on the opposite hill. For extra space, guests also have access to a small wooden summerhouse, with furniture and a firepit outside, plus a Dutch oven for al fresco cooking. There’s also a modern bathroom and boot room with electricity and WiFi just a few more metres away.

If you’re here to revel in the setting then you’ll find everything you need. There’s a pair of binoculars for peeping at the ducks and moorhens as they to and fro from the pond, while board games and dominoes are provided for cosy evenings in when it’s too cloudy to see the stars. When you do hop back in the car, though, you can pick between a seaside break around the beaches of Croyde Bay and the north coast or ambling in the rugged Dartmoor countryside, where a walk into Lydford Gorge – the deepest gorge in the South West with a spectacular 30-metre waterfall – is a must. Which ever you choose, a hearty meal in a local pub is always a nice way to cap it off, while a full English brekkie at Jacob’s Hut each morning is always an extra option too. Bliss.

The Owner Says

Jacob's Hut is a Shepherd's Hut on the Devon/Cornwall border which sleeps 2.  An ideal place to escape with breakfast available if required for an easier start to your day. From the stable door you look out to the pond and to Thrushelton Church on the opposite hill.  It's even lovelier outside where you can have a picnic by the pond or relax in the summerhouse which gets the evening sun.  There is a firepit in front of the summerhouse for rustling up a meal in the dutch oven or simply for toasting marshmallows. (Toasting fork supplied!)  For cooler evenings you have a wood burner in the hut and lighting is by LED storm lanterns.

The Perfect getaway!

What a weekend! A perfect birthday get away, I feel like the other reviews hit the nail on the head! Jo and Gordon are fantastic hosts, incredibly welcoming! The hut itself is amazing, very cosy, with all the facilities for glamping- candles, crockery/cutlery, bbq/gas hob, running water, and a shower room close by, Jo really has thought of everything. I had the best nights sleep in what felt like forever, true comfort! The fire pit was great for evenings when we wanted to stay up a bit later to watch the stars and make s'mores. The summer house was perfect for the evenings and dinner time as it is the perfect spot to catch the last sunlight of the evening. Waking up in the morning, opening the top half of the stable door to look out at the picturesque view made it feel like we were in our own world, completely private and separate from the rest of the world. The freezer and fridge were a life saver for all of our food, only a few seconds away in 'grumpy's shed'. Jo was incredibly helpful with recommending places to go. We took a drive to the Eden project for a day, and zip wired and all sorts before exploring the centre - I would highly recommend this! We also took a few random trips to near by towns to explore and tried some of the local icecream- Laurence reckons this is the best icecream he has ever eaten! We were torn with leaving a review, as this was the perfect place that we wanted to keep just for us - we have never visited a place more than once, but are defiantly planning on coming back to Jacobs hut- truly amazing!!!

Fantastic Location with service to match

As an enthusiastic traveller I don't like to return to the same place twice - Jacob's Hut broke my rule and we have now visited three times (and plan on many more!) The Shepherds hut is beautifully renovated and very well thought out, with every detail planned for a comfortable stay. I love opening the shepherds hut door in the morning and looking at the picture perfect view in total privacy. I have never been anywhere quite so relaxing and tranquil. The bathroom facility is lovely and clean and close enough that a midnight wee doesn't feel like too much of a trek...just enough time to take in the beautiful stars in the sky. Josephine's breakfast is impeccable. Well thought out, delivered to the door, fresh and prepared with love. The little brown pots of stewed fruit/fruit are my favourite as each morning these are different and very yummy. Eating breakfast by the water is very romantic. Help and service is always at hand at the Shepherds Hut but your privacy is entirely respected and you feel completely alone in your own little haven - I feel this balance is struck perfectly, a very hard thing to do but Jacob's Hut has nailed it. There are lots of things to see and do in the area and the hut has a wealth of resources to help you plan any holiday activity. The last visit we had I was 7 months pregnant and did some study! This is how comfortable and peaceful it is! We love Jacobs hut and feel like we have found a real gem. We also believe it's only ours and no one else visits! That's how special it is. We highly recommend a visit and feel very lucky to have stumbled across Jacob's Hut.

Amazing location to “decompress”

Thank you to Jo and Gorden for a wonderful stay at Jacob’s Hut. Peace and tranquillity in abundance in a beautifully appointed shepherd’s hut. I was greeted by Jo with a wonderful slice of fruitcake and pot of tea after being shown around. There was a fridge/freezer in a nearby barn for my sole use and a beautifully clean WC/Shower room close by in the “boot room” of the farmhouse. Cooking was either over the fire pit or on a gas ring/BBQ to the side of the hut under a large awning with LED lights for night time. There is no power in the hut but plenty of LED storm lanterns and there is a socket in the boot room for charging up phones etc and access to the farm’s WI-FI if needed. I had the best sleep I have had in ages in the hut on a very comfortable double bed. There is a small wood burner in the hut which I didn’t need as the weather was so warm but fire lighting supplies were provided as well as logs for the fire pit which I did use! The hammock area by the pond was delightfully cool on a scorching day. I can highly recommend this site and I am sure I will be back

A perfect getaway

We stayed at Jacob's Hut over the Easter weekend, and although the weather was far from warm, the welcome of the owners (Josephine and Gordon) certainly was. The woodburning stove kept us toasty for a couple of cosy nights in playing games. We ate out one evening at the Dartmoor Inn, which was excellent; there are lots of places to eat within a few miles. Josephine recommended a very enjoyable walk by Meldon reservoir; we also visited Launceston and the Cornish coast. We would love to return in the summer so that we can enjoy the al fresco cooking and dining, although our experience of cosying up against the elements was equally enjoyable. Josephine provides an excellent cooked breakfast which is highly recommended!
