Small-scale, eco-friendly glamping on a working Devon farm, and the West Country coast nearby

Utter the words "proper camping" and you may start some controversy. Is it possible to have a genuine, camping experience yet still enjoy the odd glamping luxury like a double bed and fully equipped outdoor kitchen? Cheglinch Farm Glamping is an eco-conscious site that splits the difference between traditional tenters and over-pampered glampers, by providing off-the-grid seclusion in comfortable canvas – all set in a family-run working dairy farm, amongst North Devon's picturesque agricultural scenery.

To call Cheglinch Farm Glamping a ‘site’ is perhaps a misstatement. The space consists of just three, five-person Lotus Bell Tents, with views across the open meadows and ample space for kids to run free while adults blissfully relax. There’s no huge plastic playground or gaudy reception building, just a car-free sheltered field to connect with nature. "We wish to keep the field as natural as possible, with the minimum environmental impact," says the owner Ella. The small-scale atmosphere makes the place feel remarkably exclusive, with not a soul to disturb you, well, apart from the local family of pheasants, visiting deer, or dairy cows grazing nearby.

The tents – which are set upon wooden standings within their own dedicated 4-acre field – proper beds are made-up ready for your arrival and come complete with blankets, hot water bottles and a wood burning stove set just outside of the tent, to keep you toasty. Everything needed to whip up a good meal is found in each tent's private outdoor kitchen area, equipped with a gas barbecue, as well as cooking equipment and crockery. The eco-friendly focus continues with the ablution facilities, with a private composting toilet housed in a portable wooden structure next to each tent and quirky, private shower rooms within a wooden building across the field.

After soaking in Cheglinch's winning ambiance (be warned, it may take a while), you’re left with North Devon, in all its glory. For a secluded swim, the Victorian bathing pool at the Tunnels Beaches should impress, as it's reached by a network of tunnels, hand-carved through the Ilfracombe cliffs by Welsh miners in 1823. If it’s wilderness you’re after, nothing beats the desolate beauty of Exmoor National Park. With one foot in Somerset, and the other in Devon, Exmoor's attractions include wild ponies, glittering night skies – the lack of light pollution made it Europe's first Dark Skies Reserve – and endless walking routes.

Fully Furnished Lotus Belle Tent
We absolutely loved our stay at Ella's. The tent was lovely and clean with enough room to move around in, loved the bedside tables for a little bit of storage. The compost loo was clean, and the shower rooms were perfect. It was great to have our own little cubicle where we could leave our towels and toiletries. Ella was very welcoming and friendly, and was quick to respond to any messages. The kitchen was fully equipped which saved us having to pack lots of bits and bobs! The play barn was a great space, and I also loved the fact we had our own cupboard to charge phones if needed. My boys absolutely adored the guinea pigs and there was enough room for my boys to run around and play. I would totally recommend a stay here. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Our fab stay at Cheglinch.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cheglinch Farm! An absolutely beautiful place that was clean and tidy throughout, very peaceful and quiet, and nothing was ever too much to ask, Ella and her family were always one text or call away. My children loved checking the chicken coop for eggs every morning and seeing the guinea pigs too. The play area is fabulous for young children and toddlers; there was so much space to explore and play. The tents are large, spacious, and clean as were the play barn and showers, all areas are very well maintained. Thank you for helping us to celebrate our daughter's birthday, we were sad to leave! P.S do make sure that you read the paperwork upon booking to ensure you don't use your sat nav as per Ella's instructions, you will find the site much more easily this way xx

We had a fabulous 4 night stay in ‘Beech.’ The tent itself was lovely and homely, really comfortable and everything had been thought of from fleecy blankets to hot water bottles. The overall farm experience was great for the children, they loved saying hello to all the animals and collecting eggs from our allocated chickens. The children all enjoyed being feral, playing in the den and the mud kitchen. A fabulous place and I would recommend for families with children looking to just escape for a while.

Wow! The most luxurious glamp site I have been to or can imagine. A truly beautiful setting, wonderful lotus Bell tents, very comfy beds, private composting toilet AND lovely hot private shower. Very well-equipped private undercover kitchen area and tap. Some wonderful touches as the site is part of a working farm, so lots of calves to look at, your own personal coop of chickens to provide you with fresh eggs every morning. We will be returning. Thank you for a wonderful stay! Also thoroughly recommend The Crown in West Down (15-20 mins walk) - great welcome and food, and the fish & chip van that visits West Down every Monday evening

From the host
At Cheglinch Farm Glamping we aim to enable you to wind down, relax and get back to nature in beautiful rural North Devon, whilst still being able to enjoy your home comforts and the nearby coast. Our luxurious furnished Lotus Belle tents will comfortably sleep four plus a little one. They are equipped with proper beds, made up ready for your arrival, wooden cabinets and bistro table. Outside you will find your own private toilet, shower room and kitchen area. Our fire pits are great for toasting marshmallows but you may prefer to give the wood burning stove a try or use the family size gas barbecue for cooking a proper meal! The huge field really is a special place. Sited on our working dairy farm, historically it was a wetland area. However, it has been sensitively drained, whilst maintaining small pockets of marshland which are great at attracting many different species of insects and birds. Children love darting around in the longer grass, hiding behind the reeds and playing with the mud kitchen. They can also collect the eggs from our farm chickens, meet our family of guinea pigs, watch the calves being fed in our nearby calf sheds and try to spot our herd of dairy cows grazing within the hamlet. You are also sure to see the odd tractor or two going about their summer tasks. Oh, and don't forget to visit the seaside. We are a situated in a perfect location to visit North Devon's best sandy beaches. Ilfracombe is just 3 miles away, Woolacombe a 10 minute drive and Croyde, Putsborough and Saunton are all within easy reach. We hope that the weather is kind to you during your stay with us but if not you can always take shelter in our play barn. Here you will find dining tables and chairs, a play area, fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave and some electric points for charging your phone. We are open from May to the end of September. In peak season we offer Friday to Monday, Monday to Friday and week long stays. Off peak, we offer 2 & 3 night weekend stays, 3 & 4 night midweek breaks (Monday arrival), as well as a selection of other short breaks. Please contact us if you are looking for a different length stay or different arrival day, we will do our best to accommodate you! Prices range from £65 per night per tent off peak to £115 in peak season, for up to 5 people.
