Owl Valley Glamping
Owl Valley Glamping, Bideford, Devon EX39 5EQ
There may not be any electricity at Owl Valley Glamping but it’s certainly a good place to re-charge your batteries. And it’s precisely because of its off-grid set-up that this rings true. Blending luxury with back-to-nature authenticity, this wooded hideaway in the bottom of a North Devon valley is a real glamping gem. “We think of it as wild camping in style”, owners Ray and Pauline tell us. It’s hard to disagree.
Comprised of just three bell tents, each pitched on a flat wooden platform and set in a quiet clearing among the trees, Owl Valley Glamping provides every comfort yet still has that essential camping essence. While tents are furnished with double beds, wooden cabinets and have their own private shower rooms, they’re also delightfully free of mod-cons. Internet evenings are traded in for nights around the campfire and day-time fun consists of real outdoor exploration. Dens can be built among the trees, there’s a pond where you can watch for dragonflies and a stream that bubbles through the site is like a magnet for children. Can they build a dam without getting soaking wet in the process? The answer is invariably no.
The real beauty of the place, though, is its privacy. A relic from days gone by, the site is actually situated beside what was once an ancient horse and cart road, with Pauline and Ray’s thatched cottage the old, official toll house. Today it has been transformed into a glorious nature reserve where native wildflowers flourish. Shielded among the trees glampers feel a million miles from anywhere, when in reality the campsite is based in one of the most popular tourist areas along the North Devon coast. Pauline and Ray have even put together a little folder with information about local attractions, though for most the nearby beaches are the main headline.
It’s equally easy, however, to spend all of your time simply hanging around the campsite. There are board games and wildlife books in the communal shack and, slightly higher up the wooded slope, a second hut with a wonderful BBQ terrace. It's the perfect place to sit and enjoy an evening drink. Gloriously off-grid, you can just sit back and take in the sounds of the woodland.
The Owner SaysOwl Valley is located about 1 mile from Bideford North Devon. Full of bird song, flowers and places to explore it is a peaceful and secluded valley away from the pressures of everyday life. It even has its own stream and a pond full of wildlife. After moving to this tranquil, beautiful valley in 2015, owners Pauline and Ray decided they would like to share their valley with other like minded souls and 'Owl Valley glamping' was born. Our beautiful, if a little eclectic, 5 metre Bell tents are named after some of our resident Owls: Barn, Tawny (30 metres apart) and the secluded Long eared.
Such a wonderful place!
My family stayed in Owl Valley in June 2017 for 2 nights. We had such a wonderful time! The tents and facilities are great, they had everything that we needed. My 5 year old loved looking for fishes and frogs in the stream, finding butterflies and finding deer tracks. It was so relaxing and perfect to get away from everything. Bideford is just a few minutes drive away to get supplies or go to the play area. Pauline and Ray were lovely and so very accommodating. They met us at the car park and brought everything down to the site. We look forward to stopping there again.
We were one of the first guests to stay at Owl Valley (Sorry for the late review!) It was our first time glamping, normally we are at home in rustic campsites, but what a wonderful change. Pauline and Ray met us at the carpark to help us down with our things, explain where everything was and were such wonderful and friendly hosts. The bell tent was fabulous, the kids loved all sleeping under the same roof, and they throughly enjoyed exploring the area splashing around in the stream. The Parliament Shack was a true delight, with a cosy log burner which we enjoyed playing chess around in the evening, our two boys 6 and 9 loved playing darts, and snooker and were up there in their dressing gowns early in the morning enjoying the space to themselves. It was a fabulous community space, but on our last night there, we had the whole place to ourselves! We tried out the pizza barbecue oven, which was fabulous, we lit the log burner and played games in candlelight together in the Parliament shack; truly wonderful. A total getaway from technology and the rest of the world. The compost loo was fab, the shower we found good but a little bit of a faff filling up, however we just used a jug of warm water to have a sit down wash - delightfully rustic. A truly special space with truly wonderful hosts, we wish them all the very best and may you have many very happy wild glampers! We will be back. :)
Just what we needed!
We stayed at Owl Valley for 3 nights this summer and had a fantastic time in this beautiful, peaceful wilderness. The owners, Pauline and Ray, were fabulous and provided all of the information we needed and were on hand to meet us when we arrived to help with our things and show us around. The bell tent was beautiful with plenty of space for us all. We stayed in Barn Owl which is far enough away from the next tent along to feel private yet close enough to meet your neighbours and share tips for days out etc. The site is beautiful, with plenty of paths to explore and nature to enjoy. Our children loved visiting the Parliament shack to play games and chat to the other children staying on site and at night, it's a lovely place to sit by candlelight with the woodburner and listen to the stream and the wildlife. All facilities were great with the private compost loo and shower being a really nice touch. This was just what we needed for a short break away from things and to enjoy some proper family time. This is a newly opened site and feels very special, Pauline and Ray are lovely, very helpful and just want people to enjoy the space they have created. We will certainly look to return one day to see how the site develops and enjoy the beauty and peace.
Lovely Weekend Away in a Quite Glamping Spot
Just enjoyed a lovely couple of days at owl valley glamping. This is a newly opened glamping site, run by a couple called Ray and Pauline. We booked two nights for around 75 pounds a night for 5 (one 6 months old!) which I thought was very reasonable. We had a really warm welcome and were made to feel at home from the get go. The Bell tents are great, warm and inviting with a few creature comforts. Easily enough room for us in the double bed and the kids in 2 singles. The tents are raised on new decking with your own private WC and shower. The shower requires filling and pressurising with hot water in the morning but actually works well. There is a free standing communal area next the the stream which runs along the valley floor. This had a nice log burner, dining table and chairs and 8 gas hobs for cooking. There is also a separate large fire pit area hidden in the woods and BBQ area. Thanks again Ray and Pauline for your hospitality and I'm sure we will see you again!
