Adults-only bell tents on an off-grid site with campfires near the North Cornish coast

If your vision of a holiday in Cornwall involves yoga, surfing, campfires, canvas and a taste of the simple life, then leave the family-friendly sites behind and book a bell tent at The Paddock Wildcamp. It’s an adults-only, bell tent site in countryside between Perranporth and Newquay. There’s a yoga school across the road, a thatch-roofed pub a mile down the road and a choice of beaches five minutes’ drive away. Ready to go? We don’t blame you.

This new-for-2021 summer campsite ticks the boxes in so many ways, but it’s fair to say it won’t be for everyone. The place is off grid and, while the solar power on site is enough to charge phones and tablets, don’t expect to plug in a hairdryer or get your ice blocks frozen. Part of the joy of being here is enjoying the simple life for a few days and owner Ren is a sociable sort who’ll be happy to share tips on sustainable living. Having said all that, The Paddock Wildcamp is not without its luxuries. Ren has travelled the world, staying in and managing hostels, so she knows how to look after her guests.

She has pre-pitched four bell tents here and kitted each out with a bed. You’ll need to bring your own bedding and food but otherwise it’s all set up for you. There are solar lights, cooking equipment and a fire pit outside. There’s a rustic but lovely outdoor kitchen – all reclaimed wood, corrugated tin cladding and fairy lights – with a gas stove, barbecue, kitchen sink and all-important kettle. There’s a hot shower and a compost loo that’s so good it’s won an award from the Cornish off-grid community.

The site is just an acre but as there’s only ever a handful of grown-up glampers there’s plenty of room to roam alongside the site’s free-range chickens and ducks. Roam out of site and a mile down the road and you can eat at The Smuggler’s Den pub or follow footpaths across fields for 40 minutes to swim at Holywell Bay. Otherwise, it’s five or ten minutes in the car to reach the surf at Perranporth or Newquay, half an hour to Padstow or St Ives. This is the place to base yourself if you want a summer holiday on the north Cornish coast away from the crowds. It’s a chilled-out spot that’s near great beaches; off grid but on point.

Facilities

There is a single compost loo (complete with disco balls and disco lights), one hot shower and one outside cold shower to rinse after a day at the beach. Each of the four bell tents has a double bed (guests need to provide their own bedding), plates, cups, cutlery and cooking gear. Outside, each tent has a fire pit and there's another shared fire pit if you're feeling sociable, as well as an outdoor kitchen with a gas stove and barbecue. There is no mains electricity on site but solar USB charging is available for phones/tablets. Alternatively, a charge bank can be supplied if you wish to charge a phone in your tent (please bring cables).

Suitable For

Glampers, small groups – yes. Campers, campervans, caravans, motorhomes, dogs, kids, big noisy groups – no.

Nearby

There is a yoga school, Lime House Yoga (01872 572620) just over the road from the site. The closest beaches are Holywell bay and Perranporth, both about a five-minute drive away (two miles), with Newquay six miles in the other direction. You can walk across fields to Holywell Bay with its distinctive Gull Rocks, which fans of the TV series Poldark may recognise. There are plenty of surf schools and lots of facilities on the beaches of Newquay and Perranporth. Holywell is a quieter spot with just one seasonal shop. All of the north coast of Cornwall is yours to explore with foodie harbour town Padstow 20 miles north of The Paddock and artsy St Ives just under 30 miles south. Both Lands End and the less commercialised Lizard Point are around 40 miles from here and a drive of about an hour.

Food & Drink

The closest pub is the charming Smugglers Den Pub and Restaurant (01637 830209), a mile away and walkable along a quiet country lane. It offers great quality food all day but you're advised to book in advance for dinner as it is very popular. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in Perranporth, a five-minute drive from site, including the famous bar on the beach The Wateringhole, which often has live music. For organic and good quality local produce try Mr Fruity in Goonhavern, a couple of miles down the road. There are plenty of shops for supplies including an excellent butcher (Chapmans) in Perranporth. For seasonal local produce, there's also a farmers market once a month in Newquay (six miles from site) and a more regular, weekly one in Truro (nine miles away) on Saturdays.

Open

July and August only.

The Owner Says

The Paddock is set on a quiet lane with open valley views of the beautiful Cornish countryside. I live on-site in my off-grid log cabin I built with my partner so rely on solar for power and create my own soil for the flower beds from the compost loos. I try to be as sustainable as I can by living simply, growing as much of my food, composting waste food, recycling and aim to be plastic-free as possible.

The Paddock has been a labour of love over the past 4 years transforming it from an overgrown field into a space of tranquility and colour. I have a variety of chickens and ducks that free-range during the day and are excellent at keeping pesky slugs and snails at bay as well as producing delicious eggs that are available to buy, highly recommended for your breakfast.

Spend your days relaxing while listening to bird songs, watching the swifts and swallows swoop down or the buzzards that soar overhead, or explore the local walks, villages and many places of interest Cornwall has to offer. If you surf then you will be spoilt for choice of beaches all within a few minutes drive. If you have never surfed and fancy having a go then you can either hire a board and suit for the day or maybe book a half-day lesson at one of the many surf schools in the area. After all that activity there's nothing better than enjoying a drink while watching the stunning Cornish sunset from a beach bar or returning to the Paddock for a bbq and relax around the firepit, you might even hear the owls hooting if you listen carefully. However you choose to spend your days here, you will return home relaxed and revitalised.

Getting There

If using SatNav, use the postcode TR4 9PP. From the A30 take the Perranporth exit on to the B3285. Turn right at the sign for the Monkey Tree Holiday Park and then, at the T-junction, turn right onto A3075 signposted for Newquay. After about 300 metres, turn left signposted for Rejerrah. Follow the lane, bearing right at the fork and continue for about a mile. Look out for the white house named The Retreat on the left up the hill, The Paddock is immediately next to here with a field gate slightly back from the roadside.

The closest train station is in Newquay (six miles away). Unfortunately, due to the rural location, The Paddock is not easily accessible via public transport, so, from Newquay, the best bet would be to get a taxi.

The perfect, relaxing getaway

Ren and Betty were the perfect hosts, so helpful and kind. Ren had loads of knowledge about the local area and couldn’t have done more to make us feel welcome. The tent was lovely and the beds were super comfy. It was great to get back to basics and know that we were helping the environment. Everything we needed was supplied and the kitchen area especially was lovely. It had everything we needed and was so beautiful. It was great to wake up with the chickens and ducks roaming around and it was so beautiful to end the day cozied up in front of the fire pit underneath the solar lights. The area was situated right near Perranporth and not far from Newquay so was great for surfing. We honestly didn’t want to leave and hope to go back next year! What you get for the price is unbelievable and we both feel so fortunate to have stumbled across this gem!

Beautiful and quiet place to stay

We came as a group of four and all had a really great time. Good facilities including a great outdoor kitchen area with a separate area for log fires and hanging out. Shower is really hot, which was really needed after a long day. There are chickens and ducks roaming about the site - it’s all just really lovely. Highly recommend!

Amazing weekend at the paddock Wildcamp. Perfect location for exploring the north Cornwall coast, and easy to get across to the south coast in 30-45 mins. Lovely campsite with gorgeous views. Bell tent was spacious and super comfy! Really comfortable bed. Nice touches with solar lights inside and battery pack for charging phones etc. Loved the kitchen area. Really stylish, everything you need. Great gas bbq for cooking. Well lit and undercover. Super hot shower for post surf warm up! Ren was fantastic, super friendly and helpful.
