A small glamping site on a family farm in Cornwall, set just outside the idyllic seaside village of Polperro

Looking for a taste of The Good Life by the sea? How about a stay at West Kellow Yurts in the Cornish village of Polperro? Just don’t mention Beer while you’re there. We don’t mean ale (there’s plenty of that in this harbourside village’s traditional smugglers’ inns). We mean the Devonian village of the same name. It pipped Polperro to the post in the West-Country heat of Channel 4’s 'Village of the Year' competition. That makes Polperro only the second-best village in the west, according to presenter Penelope Keith. We’d say that’s a matter of opinion. With a working harbour, tumbling lanes of fishermen’s houses, beautiful countryside and beaches within reach – it’s hard not to love this location.

It’s a steep 25-minute walk out of the village to West Kellow Yurts. A duck pond, a chicken coop, a back-to-basics approach and eco-friendly facilities help make up this small glamping getaway. Three yurts, a gypsy wagon and a summer-only bell tent share a nine-acre field on a third-generation family farm. There’s no electricity to the tents or the wagon and the shared double kitchen’s power supply is from West Kellow’s own solar farm. It’s eco friendly for sure but it’s still glamping, with the hammocks, sun loungers and comfortable bedding helping to make sure this is a place to unwind. Campfires, sea views, birdsong and starry nights help too.

The site seems to attract couples and adult groups (perhaps it’s that steep climb out of the village) but it’s suitable for all the family – and dogs are welcome as well. There are swings and swingball on site as well as free football golf for glampers. Half-a-dozen lovely Cornish beaches and the South West Coast Path are within easy reach and Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary is nearby. It’s less than an hour’s driving to The Lost Gardens of Heligan and The Eden Project. But you might be content with something more local and low-key.

Exploring coastal villages with picturesque views, heritage museums and traditional inns might be sightseeing enough; and there’s arguably nowhere more scenic than Polperro itself. Reflecting on that televised competition between it and the village that must-not-be-named; the winner was perhaps more Margot’s version of The Good Life. Charming, traditional Polperro might have been a better fit for Felicity Kendall’s character, Barbara – and nowhere more so than in the fields above the village at West Kellow Yurts.

Bluejay Cowboy Wagon
Wagon glamping
Had a great stay here! I loved the wagon, was a bit scary in strong winds and storm but the wagon is actually really strong and safe! It was a lovely place with amazing views , even though it did mean climbing up a steep hill to get there - totally worth it ! They provided free coffee and tea as well as eggs and firewood if you wanted. Wagon is super cosy and warm to stay in - would stay here again !

Skylark Yurt
We really enjoyed our Hipcamp stay at Matts skylark yurt, a lovely location with great views . The yurt was fab and included a private yurt garden with hammock and loungers- so great for a small family or couple. The communal areas included great facilities and even a pizza oven! The whole team were really friendly and welcoming, the site was very relaxed which made us feel at home. The kitchen garden produce was a bonus!

Barn Owl Yurt
The yurt was nice but we had a burnt outdoor table with only 2 chairs which was also small for a family of 4. The area around was messy with wood laying around everywhere and untidy, very old rusted bikes and canoes laying around not really for use as the website stated. We didn't know which kitchen to use eventually used one which was cleaner and worked our it was ours. But only one set of pans and not enough plates for the people there so ended up used and not cleaned so had to wait until they had finished dinner or breakfast so we went out instead. Kitchens were not very clean not were fridges. The info was good and been good to have this emailed as didn't know it was in the kitchen and knowing that there was a power pack for our yurt would have been helpful earlier. The chickens were good and the kids fed them. But people took the eggs in the morning so wasn't any fresh so i rhonk the wording needs changing on the site. Although you can hisit the fsrm as well.

A little slice of Cornish heaven
What an absolutely perfect hideaway! The yurt was clean, comfy and stylish, woth a gorgeous log burner. There was so much space and lot to keep the kids entertained. We loved popping down to the farm to help with the eggs in the morning and to feed the ducks. Great amenities in a fantastic location! Highly recommended.

Bluejay Cowboy Wagon
Great views, lots of space, friendly staff, well managed and organised. Excellent clean toilets/ showers. Expensive for what it is, but I suppose if people are willing to pay it....(used a discount voucher, but wouldn't consider paying full price). Walk back from polperro is stiff to say the least :D

The yurt bamboo enclosures contains a campfire area, hammock and camping chairs with natural willow for protection from the elements. The 2 equipped kitchens have 2 fridge freezers, pots, pans, forks, mugs, plates etc along with tea bags, sugar and kettle/toaster/microwave. There is a gas hob inside, or you can take one of the portable gas hobs back to your yurt for a cuppa. These 2 shared kitchens have indoor seating for 6 people. I would say the beautiful scenery, the sea views and the peaceful nature of the campsite, along with it's close proximity to Polperro (just 15 mins walk), is a key feature. We also have a large 16 seated outdoor table, a small 9 hole football golf course at the other end of the field (400 metres away, so it's out of earshot), which is free for guests to use any time of the day. There are a couple of swings, a swing ball and a football goal for the restless as well as a vegetable patch, sweet peas, many flowers/hanging baskets and a herb garden for those with an interest in the garden. If it's animals you like, there are many small birds, especially skylarks and yellow hammers, which roam about the site freely. We also have 6 chickens, 3 ducks and some fish which you may feed at 9am at the duck pond/chicken coup. To see the 2 ponds, you would need to turn left out of the car park and enjoy a short 5 minute walk down the farms driveway. To see the ducks, you would go need to go under the wooden archway then down the path to the large pond which has an attractive/relaxing setting. Once you return to your yurt and you have enjoyed a drink from the fridge/kitchen, you might want to wander across the grass cut path, past the football golf course and down the lane to the historic fishing village of Polperro (voted 2nd most attractive village in Great Britain in a recent televised poll). This quaint village has many family run shops, pubs, cafes and a few restaurants, most with indoor and outdoor seating areas. You can enjoy a boat ride to Looe which is another popular fishing town which has 2 golden sandy beaches and more shops/coastal walks to explore. My personal favourite coastal walk would be starting from Looe's neighbouring village, Hannafore, walking towards Talland (50 mins with a great outdoor lunchtime/evening 'smugglers cafe'), before finally heading onwards to Polperro (another 20 mins) for refreshments. This is just one of the many routes to explore which hugs the coast through most of it's journey.
Nearby attractions

It’s a 15-minute downhill walk to the historic fishing village of Polperro where Polperro Heritage Museum (01503 272423) commemorates smuggling and fishing. There’s also a Model Village and Railway (01503 272378), shops and places to eat and drink. Looe is a 10-minute drive (4 miles) or a scenic boat trip away (hop aboard in Polperro harbour). It’s a busy fishing port with lots of shops, eateries, the small Old Guildhall Museum & Gaol (01503 263709) and a family-friendly, sand beach. From East Looe, you can take a boat trip to Looe Island Nature Reserve (01872 273939). Just outside Looe is Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary (01503 262532) and a little further away (6 miles from site) is Porfell Wildlife Park (01503 220211). The closest beach to site is at Talland Bay (a 10-minute drive away) and the walk from Looe to Polperro passing here is one of many recommended coastal walks in the area on the South West Coast Path. There are adventurous activities including zip wires, go karting and an aqua park at Adrenalin Quarry (11 miles away; 01579 308204). The Eden Project (01726 438003) and The Lost Gardens of Heligan (01726 845100) are within an hour’s drive of West Kellow Yurts as well.

Food and drink

The 2 kitchens on site make on-site cooking easy and you can pick up fresh fish from Polperro Fish Market on the quayside (a 15-minute walk away). There’s a corner shop where you can pick up a pint of milk but for more supplies head to Pelynt premiere shop (2 miles away with an award winning butchers). The larger grocery stores are in Liskeard or why not try Tredinnick Farm Shop (6 miles - 01503 240992) where there’s also a café with recommended full English breakfasts. The Smugglers Rest Café (01503 272259) at Talland and The Three Pilchards pub (01503 272233) in Polperro also come highly recommended by campsite host Matt. There are plenty of other places to eat and drink in Polperro including pubs The Crumplehorn Inn (01503 272348) and The Blue Peter Inn (01503 272743) and award-winning restaurant The Kitchen (01503 272812). There are even more pubs and eateries in neighbouring Looe (4 miles away) including The Ship Inn (01503 263124) and Ye Old Salutation Inn (01503 262784). For seafood head to Trawlers on the Quay (01503 269088).
