A small glamping site on a family farm in Cornwall, set just outside the idyllic seaside village of Polperro

Looking for a taste of The Good Life by the sea? How about a stay at West Kellow Yurts in the Cornish village of Polperro? Just don’t mention Beer while you’re there. We don’t mean ale (there’s plenty of that in this harbourside village’s traditional smugglers’ inns). We mean the Devonian village of the same name. It pipped Polperro to the post in the West-Country heat of Channel 4’s 'Village of the Year' competition. That makes Polperro only the second-best village in the west, according to presenter Penelope Keith. We’d say that’s a matter of opinion. With a working harbour, tumbling lanes of fishermen’s houses, beautiful countryside and beaches within reach – it’s hard not to love this location.

It’s a steep 25-minute walk out of the village to West Kellow Yurts. A duck pond, a chicken coop, a back-to-basics approach and eco-friendly facilities help make up this small glamping getaway. Three yurts, a gypsy wagon and a summer-only bell tent share a nine-acre field on a third-generation family farm. There’s no electricity to the tents or the wagon and the shared double kitchen’s power supply is from West Kellow’s own solar farm. It’s eco friendly for sure but it’s still glamping, with the hammocks, sun loungers and comfortable bedding helping to make sure this is a place to unwind. Campfires, sea views, birdsong and starry nights help too.

The site seems to attract couples and adult groups (perhaps it’s that steep climb out of the village) but it’s suitable for all the family – and dogs are welcome as well. There are swings and swingball on site as well as free football golf for glampers. Half-a-dozen lovely Cornish beaches and the South West Coast Path are within easy reach and Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary is nearby. It’s less than an hour’s driving to The Lost Gardens of Heligan and The Eden Project. But you might be content with something more local and low-key.

Exploring coastal villages with picturesque views, heritage museums and traditional inns might be sightseeing enough; and there’s arguably nowhere more scenic than Polperro itself. Reflecting on that televised competition between it and the village that must-not-be-named; the winner was perhaps more Margot’s version of The Good Life. Charming, traditional Polperro might have been a better fit for Felicity Kendall’s character, Barbara – and nowhere more so than in the fields above the village at West Kellow Yurts.

The yurts and wagon all have beds and the bell tent has 2 double mattresses (all with bedding and linen provided). Each yurt has a log burner and all the tents are surrounded by their own bamboo fence outside to act as a windbreak – within which is a hammock, sun lounger, picnic table, fire pit and outdoor seating. The wagon has the same outdoor furniture. The site has 2 equipped under-cover kitchens each with a fridge-freezer, gas hob, toaster, microwave, seating for 6 and a washing-up sink. There is a summer house, too, with indoor seating and 2 shower rooms with flushing toilets. A basket of logs is supplied and additional ones are available to buy for £4 (subject to availability) from the summerhouse. There is a 9-hole football golf pitch on site as well as swings and a swing ball. There is also a duck pond and chicken coop within the farm and you are welcome to help at feeding time.

Suitable For

Glamping only. Groups can book out the entire site. Dogs are welcome.

It’s a 15-minute downhill walk to the historic fishing village of Polperro where Polperro Heritage Museum (01503 272423) commemorates smuggling and fishing. There’s also a Model Village and Railway (01503 272378), shops and places to eat and drink. Looe is a 10-minute drive (4 miles) or a scenic boat trip away (hop aboard in Polperro harbour). It’s a busy fishing port with lots of shops, eateries, the small Old Guildhall Museum & Gaol (01503 263709) and a family-friendly, sand beach. From East Looe, you can take a boat trip to Looe Island Nature Reserve (01872 273939). Just outside Looe is Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary (01503 262532) and a little further away (6 miles from site) is Porfell Wildlife Park (01503 220211). The closest beach to site is at Talland Bay (a 10-minute drive away) and the walk from Looe to Polperro passing here is one of many recommended coastal walks in the area on the South West Coast Path. There are adventurous activities including zip wires, go karting and an aqua park at Adrenalin Quarry (11 miles away; 01579 308204). The Eden Project (01726 438003) and The Lost Gardens of Heligan (01726 845100) are within an hour’s drive of West Kellow Yurts as well.

Food & Drink

The 2 kitchens on site make on-site cooking easy and you can pick up fresh fish from Polperro Fish Market on the quayside (a 15-minute walk away). There’s a corner shop where you can pick up a pint of milk but for more supplies head to Pelynt (2 miles away) where there are bigger grocery stores or to Tredinnick Farm Shop (6 miles - 01503 240992) where there’s also a café with recommended breakfasts. The Smugglers Rest Café (01503 272259) at Talland and The Three Pilchards pub (01503 272233) in Polperro also come highly recommended by campsite host Matt. There are plenty of other places to eat and drink in Polperro including pubs The Crumplehorn Inn (01503 272348) and The Blue Peter Inn (01503 272743) and award-winning restaurant The Kitchen (01503 272812). There are even more pubs and eateries in neighbouring Looe (4 miles away) including The Ship Inn (01503 263124) and Ye Old Salutation Inn (01503 262784). For seafood head to Trawlers on the Quay (01503 269088).

The Owner Says

The yurt bamboo enclosures contains a campfire area, hammock and camping chairs with natural willow for protection from the elements. The 2 equipped kitchens have 2 fridge freezers, pots, pans, forks, mugs, plates etc along with tea bags, sugar and kettle/toaster/microwave. There is a gas hob inside, or you can take one of the portable gas hobs back to your yurt for a cuppa. These 2 shared kitchens have indoor seating for 6 people. I would say the beautiful scenery, the sea views and the peaceful nature of the campsite, along with it's close proximity to Polperro (just 15 mins walk), is a key feature. We also have a large 16 seated outdoor table, a small 9 hole football golf course at the other end of the field (400 metres away, so it's out of earshot), which is free for guests to use any time of the day. There are a couple of swings, a swing ball and a football goal for the restless as well as a vegetable patch, sweet peas, many flowers/hanging baskets and a herb garden for those with an interest in the garden. If it's animals you like, there are many small birds, especially skylarks and yellow hammers, which roam about the site freely. We also have 6 chickens, 3 ducks and some fish which you may feed at 9am at the duck pond/chicken coup. To see the 2 ponds, you would need to turn left out of the car park and enjoy a short 5 minute walk down the farms driveway. To see the ducks, you would go need to go under the wooden archway then down the path to the large pond which has an attractive/relaxing setting. Once you return to your yurt and you have enjoyed a drink from the fridge/kitchen, you might want to wander across the grass cut path, past the football golf course and down the lane to the historic fishing village of Polperro (voted 2nd most attractive village in Great Britain in a recent televised poll). This quaint village has many family run shops, pubs, cafes and a few restaurants, most with indoor and outdoor seating areas. You can enjoy a boat ride to Looe which is another popular fishing town which has 2 golden sandy beaches and more shops/coastal walks to explore. My personal favourite coastal walk would be starting from Looe's neighbouring village, Hannafore, walking towards Talland (50 mins with a great outdoor lunchtime/evening 'smugglers cafe'), before finally heading onwards to Polperro (another 20 mins) for refreshments. This is just one of the many routes to explore which hugs the coast through most of it's journey.

Perfect escape

We really appreciated the stunning setting, wild flowers and sea views. The campsite is very spacious and eco-friendly, with great kitchen facilities and a real back-to-nature feel. We stayed in the bell tent and loved the fact it had its own enclosure with hammock, fire pit and chairs, and swings alongside for the kids. A picnic table would have been nice, and one of the mattresses had seen better days, but otherwise there was everything we needed and the campsite owner was extremely friendly and helpful. The location is perfect for escaping the crowds in Polperro and Looe, but close enough to walk into the village for fish and chips, and for access to the beaches and coastal path. We'd particularly recommend the natural swimming pool up the cliff path in Polperro.

Romantic stay/ Happy family holiday

The operator Matt is a nice and friendly guy given us loads of useful information. The campsite is far away from city lights so during night you could see beautiful moon and stars. We saw an orange moon which is amazing. The yurt is lovely. Very tidy and suitable for a family of 3. Our kid loved it so much. In the night it‘s bit cold but Matt has prepared fireplace so it’s interesting and romantic.

Peaceful and wild

A great place, particularly for young children to be ‘wild’. They could run off across the footgolf site without us worrying. Facilities are rustic but reasonable and had everything you needed. Yurt was very nice and comfortable but the Bell tent was disappointing hence only 4 stars. ‘Beds’ were mattresses on the floor and it was pretty damp. The description needs updating as there were several more accommodations on site than advertised on Cool Camping. Overall we had a lovely stay once we had got used to the wildness! Recommend the three Pilchards in Polperro- delicious 😋

Amazing experience!

Stayed here for a few days with a couple of friends, her little girl and pup. We all had the best time exploring, it was so peaceful and beautiful. The sun was shining when we arrived and the weather was perfect for a bbq and campfire, we had a rainy day too and chilled in the yurt and the hut which was lovely and cosy. And played some football golf :D Honestly had the best time! And Matt couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating. I can’t wait to come back! :)

Lush escape

Amazing, secluded campsite with good facilities on site. No power in the yurts but great escape from the digital world. Power and hot showers in the double shared kitchen, to be shared with only 5 other pitches. Great views with the sea in the distance and only 20 min walk to Polperro, a lovely little fishing town. If you do want to eat in the town you should definitely book in advance as most places are fully booked. We ate at the Nelson which has very long waiting list but amazing french cuisine, the lobster was to die for. On out way home stopped off in Looe which is much bigger lots more to do, bigger beach and lots more places to eat. Lastly the Lost Gardens of Heligan are about 50min drive away and was fantastic!

Serene and perfect

We loved this place. So quiet, quaint and has everything you need. The yurt was comfortable, warm and bright with a skylight so you can see the open sky. Great view of the hills and the stars. Polperro is a gorgeous little town and Matt was very warm and welcoming. Will definitely be visiting again!

And breathe!

What an amazing place to stay! So much space and a lovely view of the sea. We stayed in Buzzard Yurt which was really cosy with the woodburner and tealights. The willow enclosure made it really private to relax and read or swing in the hammock and in the evening it was so nice to sit around the fire pit and look at the stars. Handy kitchens and lovely hot showers too. It’s a bit of a walk down to (and back up from!) Polperro but worth it for the harbour, the quaint streets and the lovely pubs and cafes. Plus great walking along the coast path. I’m sure we’ll be back!

Lovely peaceful location

We had a great stay in the Cowboy Wagon, it was super comfortable with warm bedding and we loved having a fire in the evening (first basket of logs and firelighters provided). The showers and loos were super clean and it was a great plus to have a kitchen to cook or make a cup of tea! Lovely views over the sea and perfect peaceful location to relax! Wish we could have stayed longer!

Loved it.

We stayed in the Shepherds hut which was brilliant, it suited me and my wife, very quiet place, fantastic view and easy access to surrounding places to visit, defo recommend

The Bell Tent

We had such a lovely experience here, even the the weather wasn’t brilliant it didn’t stop us having a great time. I would thoroughly recommend West Kellow Yurts and look forward to coming back soon.

Completely chilled

This is exactly the place the doctor ordered! If you live in a city and you need time out then West Kellow is the place to be. We had a fantastic time in the Cowboy Wagon, a real one off experience 👍 so peaceful and pretty. The staff are lovely too. Thanks for our stay, hope to come back next year. Just one thing, an umbrella at the picnic table by the wagon would be great, ta!

Beautiful views, relaxed and good value glamping.

We stayed in the Barnowl Yurt: super cosy beds, indoor wood-burner, outdoor fire pit and hammock. Loads of space and lovely sea views. My son enjoyed the football golf. Very friendly, laid-back place, easy-going without loads of rules, signs etc. Great location - loads to do. Shared kitchens and bathrooms quite basic but adequate for our needs. Thanks to the friendly staff. My boy says please add a climbing frame or similar!!

So peaceful

I love this place, we stayed in the new shepherd's hut, it has a 2 ring stove and a wood burner for colder nights, there is also a communal kitchen. Toilets and showers are clean. There is an outdoor communal eating area. We had our own fire pit and Matt supplied a BBQ. It's ideal if you want privacy. So peaceful. We will be visiting again. A very good base for visiting Looe, Polperro and Fowey. Also thanks to Milie and Archie, very helpful and friendly (and the fish was delicious 😁) x

Great location and facilities- highly recommend!

This was our first "glamping" experience and first time away with our (rather large) puppy! Matt was super friendly and accommodating and we felt very welcome. The facilities are basic but have everything you need for your stay including great hot showers and cooking facilities. Polperro and the surrounding area is lovely - lots of walks, beaches and pubs which Matt was able to recommend. We will definately return :)
