Family-friendly farm stays five miles from the harbour town of Looe, with luxury safari tent accommodation

It's all about 'British Blue' at Looe Farm. It's not just the name of their breed of cattle. It also applies to the blue New Holland tractors that work the fields, the big blue skies overhead in summer and, of course, the sparkly blue waters of the beach at the nearby harbour town of Looe. Five miles from the popular seaside spot, this dairy farm lets you spend the morning watching the cows being milked and the afternoon watching the fishing boats come and go. It's the perfect countryside and seaside combination.

Looe Farm is part of the Feather Down fold; a network of farm stays offering off-grid holidays in roomy safari tents (or ‘tented cottages’ as the Feather Down team likes to call them). Lit only by candles and oil lamps, the rustic but homely accommodation is provided by Feather Down and invariably lovely with log burners, en suite loos and cute kids’ cupboard bedrooms as particular highlights. And while the well-set up accommodation varies little from place to place, the on-site experience is unique, with hosting left in the capable hands of Feather Down’s partner farmers.

Here, that’s the Dennis family who meet you, show you to your tent and offer you a tour of the farm; don’t miss it if you’d like to see some of their 400 cows being milked. It’s a lovely setting that, alone, would provide a restful, relaxing base for a holiday away – especially if you book in a dip in the on-site hot tub but that would be to ignore its top-notch location so close to the Cornish coast.

Looe itself is a hive of activity and, with an active fleet of fishing boats, it’s the ideal place for fish and chips on the quay or something more fancy from one of its quayside restaurants. You can try your hand at crabbing or set out on a boat trip to see seals. Looe’s sandy beach is one of several within five miles of site and then there are the other picturesque towns and villages of the South Cornish Coast; with Polperro the very closest. It’s within hiking distance of Looe if you’re up for a five-mile challenge with spectacular sea views. If that’s still too sedate, head to the closest attraction to the farm, Adrenaline Quarry just a couple of miles away. There, a flooded quarry is the backdrop to the UK’s tallest swing, what is claimed to be the “maddest zipline” and an inflatable aqua assault course. If you're anything like us, no matter how you spend your days, the return to the restful, rustic and rural surrounds of the farm is likely to be as welcome as any adventure.

The Owner Says

Not too far from the stunning Tamar Valley Area of Outstand Natural Beauty lies Feather Down’s Looe farm, a dairy farm of 130 Holsteins and approximately 270 British Blue beef cattle and Holstein heifers spread over 300 acres. The Dennis family have farmed here for over 35 years and are looking forward to welcoming you to their farm.

There is always something happening on the farm at Looe - take a peek into the daily life of the farmer and watch the cows being milked. Other than dairy farming, they also grow barley on about 60 acres that is used for animal food and bedding.

There are plenty of other activities to take on too. Head to the adrenaline quarry which is only a 10-minute drive away. From go-karting to coasteering, a zip wire, an aquapark, and more, you’re certainly spoilt for choice. Make sure to visit the top eco visitor attraction that is the Eden Project, just a 40-minute drive away. Nestled in a huge crater with massive biomes it houses the largest rainforest in captivity, stunning plants, exhibitions, and, summer concerts and exciting year-round family events.

Lovers of coastal walks will be spoilt for choice in this region. Looe Beach is great for boat trips, but also it also offers excellent fish and chips shops as well as cosy pubs for you to unwind after a full day of activities.
