Family-friendly farm stays five miles from the harbour town of Looe, with luxury safari tent accommodation

It's all about 'British Blue' at Looe Farm. It's not just the name of their breed of cattle. It also applies to the blue New Holland tractors that work the fields, the big blue skies overhead in summer and, of course, the sparkly blue waters of the beach at the nearby harbour town of Looe. Five miles from the popular seaside spot, this dairy farm lets you spend the morning watching the cows being milked and the afternoon watching the fishing boats come and go. It's the perfect countryside and seaside combination.

Looe Farm is part of the Feather Down fold; a network of farm stays offering off-grid holidays in roomy safari tents (or ‘tented cottages’ as the Feather Down team likes to call them). Lit only by candles and oil lamps, the rustic but homely accommodation is provided by Feather Down and invariably lovely with log burners, en suite loos and cute kids’ cupboard bedrooms as particular highlights. And while the well-set up accommodation varies little from place to place, the on-site experience is unique, with hosting left in the capable hands of Feather Down’s partner farmers.

Here, that’s the Dennis family who meet you, show you to your tent and offer you a tour of the farm; don’t miss it if you’d like to see some of their 400 cows being milked. It’s a lovely setting that, alone, would provide a restful, relaxing base for a holiday away – especially if you book in a dip in the on-site hot tub but that would be to ignore its top-notch location so close to the Cornish coast.

Looe itself is a hive of activity and, with an active fleet of fishing boats, it’s the ideal place for fish and chips on the quay or something more fancy from one of its quayside restaurants. You can try your hand at crabbing or set out on a boat trip to see seals. Looe’s sandy beach is one of several within five miles of site and then there are the other picturesque towns and villages of the South Cornish Coast; with Polperro the very closest. It’s within hiking distance of Looe if you’re up for a five-mile challenge with spectacular sea views. If that’s still too sedate, head to the closest attraction to the farm, Adrenaline Quarry just a couple of miles away. There, a flooded quarry is the backdrop to the UK’s tallest swing, what is claimed to be the “maddest zipline” and an inflatable aqua assault course. If you're anything like us, no matter how you spend your days, the return to the restful, rustic and rural surrounds of the farm is likely to be as welcome as any adventure.

Each family-sized safari tent has three rooms: a double bedroom, a bunk room and the main living space within which is a cute cupboard bed suitable for younger children. The living space also has a fully equipped kitchen, a wood-burning stove, dining area and a sofa and just off it, each tent has a private en-suite bathroom with a hot-water shower and a flushing toilet. There is running cold water to both the hand basin and the kitchen sink. There is also a sheltered veranda outside with two deck chairs, a picnic table and outdoor cooking area with a barbecue. The site also has an honesty shop selling campsite basics.

Suitable For

Glampers, dogs – yes. Campers, campervans, motorhomes, caravans – no.

The seaside town of Looe is five miles from the farm. It has a lovely sandy beach that's good for swimming and a harbour where you can watch the fishing boats come and go or try your hand at crabbing. The town also has a museum (01503 263709) and boat trips out to the nature reserve at Looe Island (07814 264514) are possible from here with a good chance of seeing seals. You can join the South West Coast Path and walk to Polperro (it's nine miles from site, if you decide to drive it instead). The beaches at Millendreath and Seaton are also within five miles. Thrill seekers are well catered for at Adrenaline Quarry (01579 308204), just three miles from site, where there's an inflatable playground, wild swimming, zip wires and go karting available. It's a little more sedate over at Wild Futures (01503 262 532), a primate sanctuary is just four miles from site. Further afield, the Eden Project (01726 811972) is worth the 40-minute drive it takes to get there.

Food & Drink

There's a small honesty shop where you can stock up on the basics. For local and seasonal produce, try Treddinick Farm Shop (01503 240992) on the outskirts of Looe and head in to town and the East Quay for fresh fish. If you want to eat out, perhaps try the well-cooked fish, try The Sardine Factory (01503 770262), a Bib Gourmand restaurant, on the quayside at West Looe. The Venus Cafe/Bistro on the beach at Millendreath (01503 269338), four miles from site, is also recommended.
