Eco-friendly yurt glamping on the edge of Bodmin Moor

A 200-acre organic farm that takes sustainability very seriously, South Penquite is home not just to a handful of yurts and a couple of glamping pods, but also a farm education centre and a wealth of hands-on ways to learn about sustainable living. From using solar energy to rainwater harvesting, they've really got things covered. And absolutely everything is recycled – check out the roomy showers that are lined with psychedelic panels made from recycled yogurt pots and plastic bottles.

The yurts themselves have everything you need, with a mixture of proper beds and futon-style furnishings, so you'll be as happy here as a couple as you will with the whole family. And the yurts also have charming names to match their sizes, Daddy Bear sleeps five, Mummy Bear four, and Baby bear is a snug little yurt just for two. There are wood-burning stoves for heating, ample utensils for cooking, while the pod and log cabin have a different wood finish but similarly functional furnishings.

Campfires set the tone of the evenings here, and there’s a whopping amount of space to run around in. You’ll also be sharing the meadows with wandering turkeys, ducks and chickens – an endless source of entertainment for children, who also have a games barn, swings and a climbing frame to keep them occupied, shared with campers who can pitch their tents in a tiny campsite in an adjacent field.

The farm education centre is a fantastic resource for learning all about organic farming and the local environment, while the bushcraft courses they run will introduce the whole family to field skills such as den building and cooking on an open fire. They're all good skills to get you ready for adventuring on Bodmin Moor. South Penquite is less than a mile from the famous moorland, so there’s no shortage of good walking opportunities, including hiking up Brown Willy, Cornwall's highest hill. Even before you reach the moor, though, there are footpaths galore, with a farm trail right from your yurt-step that brings you face-to-face with sheep, cows and horses, while taking in disused quarries, prehistoric hut circles and the banks of the De Lank River.

Very enjoyable stay
I loved staying in the yurt, so cosy with that back to nature feel. I only have two negatives, the futon bed was very hard so I had to get an airbed to put on it to make it comfortable and if I come again I'll bring a decent light for the evenings. I like it being cosy but it was so dark that we had to use a torch for everything inside the yurt. Other than that I highly recommend it, the facilities are lovely and clean even if a bit of a walk from the yurt and it was lovely seeing all the turkeys and chickens wandering around. I would love to return again.

Cosy yurt on a lovely farm
Fantastic stay in a lovely yurt and on a lovely farm campsite. Plenty of space in between yurts for children to play, firewood well provided for, really clean showers and toilets, beautiful countryside all around, and the weekend food hut was a real bonus. Really relaxed setup. Kids (13 and 11) loved setting up the fires inside and out. Very cosy at night with the stove running, though very loud flapping of the yurt when windy. All for a very reasonable price!

4th visit and as always the yurt was clean and well equipped for us just to unpack and relax in lovely soroundings. We normally go in July but did go in May this time and although the weather was good it did get cold at 2am in the morning so you may need extra blankets, a note for any guests looking to go that time of year...The showers are amazingly hot and clean..The only one thing that was disappointing was the farm dogs kept barking .But that's not stopping us rebooking

The Snug
Camping with animals
This is the second time we have been here it’s amazing. The farm is lovely and the kids love seeing the animals. The park is canny too. Shame Barn Bites was closed though!! We loved that last year. The Snug was clean and tidy and the facilities are great. Showers are always hot! Definitely recommend!

We really enjoyed our stay. Our group stayed in 2 yurts and the snug. I didn't know what to expect but I was so impressed with how well thought out the experience is. Things like fire lighters and matches provided with the kindling and firewood. Also the instructions on how to get there were really clear. I like how you can camp really stripped back with just you and a tent or go for the glamping with facilities like the laundry machines, the communal fridge and freezer provided. It's just got really cute, cool vibes and super chill.

From the host
We are a two hundred acre family organic beef and sheep farm situated high on Bodmin Moor in the very heart of Cornwall. As well as being a demonstration farm for the Soil Association, we offer camping, yurts and a range of bunkhouse accommodation throughout the year for families, groups hikers or bikers. There is much to see on the farm which became fully organic in 2001. Since then we have continued to adopt an environmentally sensitive approach including solar heated hot water and rainwater harvesting for the campsite showers, a small wind turbine and a run of solar PV panels on a barn roof. As well as running the cows and sheep, the farm is exceptionally rich in archaeological remains and wildlife. We also have many horses, ponies, chickens, geese, ducks and of course our faithful working collies without whose help we could not run the farm.
Nearby attractions

There’s no end to glorious footfall territory on Bodmin Moor so, if you dare face the wrath of the Beast, don your boots and strike out to the ancient standing stones of The Hurlers and The Cheesewring or the peaks of Rough Tor and Brown Willy (Cornwall’s highest points). Being on the Sustrans Route three between Bristol and Land’s End, the moorland tracks are very popular with cyclists and you can explore various trails on horseback from Hallagenna Farm (01208 851500). There are pony treks, which are ideal for kids (over five), or hacking and trail rides for the more experienced. However, if the endless shades of green make you feel a little land-locked, you’re only a short drive from the town of Bodmin, and 25 minutes’ drive from the dramatic seascapes of Trebarwith and Boscastle, and the legendary, stupendously sited castle of King Arthur at Tintagel.

Food and drink

Sample some of the home produced mutton burgers and sausages from the farmhouse, or venture into the village shop (01208 851730) for local cheeses and, of course, Cornish pasties. Sausages, burgers and fabulously fresh seafood are available from the pop-up catering van that shows up at the farm every week. If you fancy something else there’s the Blisland Inn (01208 850739), which serves an extensive selection of cask ales alongside great bar snacks in the village of Blisland, about 15 minutes' walk away.
