A pop-up glamping site on a Sussex farm, home to an award-winning ice cream parlour

What do kids love? Camping and ice cream. Well, our kids do anyway. So nothing will generate as much excitement as a stay at Latchetts Farm, which basically offers the up-market, parent-friendly version of both things: Think fully furnished bell tents with proper beds and, not just ice cream, but award-winning homemade gelato made fresh on the farm each day.

Opened in 2020 by the team at Bumble Bell Tents, who usually provide fancy accommodation at music festivals, this 40-tent hideaway in Sussex’s High Weald is ideal for long weekends away. It’s a half-hour drive from the coast, 20-minute drive from Lewes and has four National Trust properties within a 15 minute drive (as well as a steam railway less than two miles down the road). The glamping site itself, meanwhile, is spacious and green, with well-furnished cotton bell tents that feature designer matting, fairy lights, cushions, blankets and throws.

Though the meadow is quiet and secluded, in some ways it still has that almost-festival feel and you can tell the organisers are from a festival background. Festoon lighting illuminates the walkway between the tents, for example, and there’s ‘street food’-style goodies available, with wood-fired pizzas on the go each Friday and Saturday evening and an extensive BBQ on Sunday afternoons.

The glamping site is, of course, just a one-off this year (or until music festivals return) and has popped up on the far more permanent pastures of Latchetts Farm. You can walk from the campsite along farm footpaths, taking in the magnificent herd of friesians that produce the milk for Latchetts' gelato. The ice cream parlour is only a few yards from the glamping meadow and you can pop in to try a new flavour each day (they create hundreds and there are always at least 18 in the parlour at any one time), as well as trying their chocolates, coffee or ordering breakfast for the following day.

Facilities

BUMBLE tents usually supply festivals and events, so expect a well-run service and all the little touches covered. The tents are five metres in diameter and sleep two to four people, with a double bed for grown ups and Jay-Be camp beds for kids. Each bell tent comes with a full bedding pack (including mattress toppers), bedside tables, extra cushions and blankets, led battery lighting, designer matting, cushions, blankets, bunting and fairy lights. Each tent has its own assigned toilet and there are (shared) shower facilities. The meadow is secure and family-friendly (off-road parking) but the farm is easily accessible, with its award-winning ice-cream parlour and breakfast available.

Suitable For

Glamping only. Well behaved dogs (on leads) are welcome. No campervans, caravans or BYO-tent camping.

Nearby

It’s a mile and a half to the Capability Brown designed Sheffield Park and Garden (01825 790231), now cared for by the National Trust. Kids can run about, feed the swans and ducks by the lake and enjoy the children’s trail. Just beyond (around two miles from the campsite) the Bluebell Railway (01825 720800) has a fantastic collection of steam locomotives, it’s perfect for a Thomas the Tank Engine-inspired day out. In the opposite direction, it’s five miles to Winnie the Pooh’s Ashdown Forest, with an array of nature trails and cycleways. You could also try walking some of the picturesque 42-mile Ouse Valley Way. If it’s sunny, nip down to Brighton for a day of good ol’-fashioned seaside frolicking.

Food & Drink

There's a traditional café on the campsite, serving breakfast and snacks (and you can also buy marshmallows for your campfire). Latchetts Farm is also very well known locally for its award-winning Ice Cream Parlour (their particularly renowned for their gourmet gelato with at least 18 flavours at any one time). Wood-fired pizzas are available on the campsite on Friday and Saturday evenings (5pm–9pm) and there's a BBQ on Sundays (midday–6pm). Elsewhere, try The Coach & Horses (01825 740369; two miles and a relatively scenic 40-minute walk) in Dane Hill, The Griffin (01825 722890; three miles) in Fletchling and The Bull (01825 722743; four miles) in Newick. We recommend booking tables in advance if you plan to eat at any of these in summer.

Opening Times

Open for just four long weekends from mid August to early September.

Lovely Tents

We had a lovely stay here, the weather wasn’t that kind to us but that’s camping in the UK for you! The field was a little uneven and our tent, on the right hand side, was on a slope. We slept the other way round on the bed so we were sleeping downhill rather than our heads sloping downwards. The tents are lovely and plenty of space for 2 adults and 2 children and the bedside tables were very useful. There is no hook up but there were communal plugs you could use to charge a phone. The farm was a short walk away and the pizza’s on the Friday and Saturday were delicious. We were going to have the paella on the Sunday but arrived just as it was being cleared away! The farm cafe also does breakfast and the ice cream is very good. There is plenty to do nearby, we visited Ashdown forest and the places in Winnie the Pooh as well as Pooh corner in Hartfield. This was a perfect getaway and great not having to put a tent away on the Monday morning.

A fantastic weekend

The tents were clean and beautiful. The beds were super comfortable. The communal area was under cover and spaced out so multiple families can enjoy the space safely. Nice and close to farm for pizza and ice creams. Nature trail was fun there too. Site was clean and other visitors were lovely. We had 5 kids under 6 with us and they all enjoyed the experience especially the fire pit. Each tent has own toilet allocated to them which only they have key for which worked well and in tent they provide a lantern which you can take with you at night to light up the loo. Only marked down as there were only 4 showers that had gorgeous warm water but the drainage for them must have blocked as all had pools of water covering the floor in them which wouldnt drain away by end of sat and when bathing toddlers it wasnt nice for them to splash in someone else's dirty water. Wouldnt put me off returning though as I am sure it's a one off re the shower. We love the look and feel of the place and the location was fab. Red lion does a mean roast on a sunday and is 2 mins drive away !!!
