Pond-side glamping on the farm with a fantastic 17th-century pub just a short walk away

We love weddings at Cool Camping and it’s been a tough year for happy couples who’ve had to rearrange their plans. But romance’s loss is camping’s gain, as usually exclusive wedding venues like Hadsham Farm open their doors to glamping guests instead. Open for just a couple of months this summer, this peaceful retreat in the north of the Cotswolds is a perfect place to find some last-minute summer space in a year when staycations are order of the day.

Five miles northeast of Banbury, Hadsham is home to just eight bell tents on the edge of a sparkling, triangular lake with an island in the middle and a cosy couple’s shepherd’s hut in a raised position overlooking it all. The lake is farmer Charlie’s doing. His family have farmed here for over a century and he’s been working hard to regenerate the space, planting thousands of trees to replace old Elm and digging out the lake to create more space for wildlife. The result is a glamping site with ample birdlife and vegetation and handy, wedding-standard facilities you can use, including plush toilets, three modern showers and the covered tipi area that's usually used for wedding receptions (now a handy chill-out space).

Naturally, there’s a beautiful old church a mile away but there’s also a fantastic 17th-century pub, The Dun Cow – thatched, low-beamed, flagstone-floored and with a large garden to the rear. A mile or so beyond, meanwhile, you’ll find the National Trust’s Upton House and Gardens and good footpaths around Edge Hill. You can walk to it all from the glamping site (it’s around an hour’s walk from Hadhsam Farm to Upton House) and then stop off at the pub on the way back.

Bell tents are pitched on the lakeside in the bottom of a natural valley and feature bedside tables, fairy lights, a charger pack for mobile phones, a pair of rattan lounge chairs, a small coffee table, a mirror and a rug (you need to bring your own bedding). Outside each tent is a wooden picnic bench. The shepherd's hut is tucked in a high corner overlooking the site. It has an en-suite loo and shower, a 'kitchen' space with a fridge and kettle but no other cooking facilities. Likewise, no bedding provided. Other toilets are located adjacent to a large tipi structure, usually used for weddings, and may be a little walk from your accommodation. The tipi itself provides a large covered space, which guests are free to use should they need (such as sheltering from the weather). There is fairy lighting throughout and tables will be arranged and allocated to accommodation units – a good place to play a board game or two with a glass of wine (or two!).

Suitable For

Glampers – yes. Campers with tents, campervans, caravans or dogs – no.

It takes less than half an hour to walk into the little thatched village of Hornton, which marks the northern edge of the Cotswolds but is perhaps one of the most archetypal of Cotswolds' spots. There's an excellent little pub (01295 670524) there overlooking the village playground. A coupe of miles from Hadsham Farm, just beyond the village, is Upton House and Gardens (01295 670266), an elegant stately home with 1930s period displays, garden terraces and walking trails. It's looked after by the National Trust and there's a good bookstore near the entrance (there's ample parking but you can walk here in under and hour from the glamping site). If stately homes are your thing, it's also six miles Broughton Castle (01295 276070), a fortified manor house with a moat and well tended garden. Banbury Town is less than five miles.

Food & Drink

Look now further than the Dun Cow (01295 670524), a lovely, thatched, low-beamed, flagstone-floored pub with a large open fire and a spacious garden to the rear. Freshly-cooked, locally-sourced food is available at weekends and there's Hook Norton Hooky on tap along with Sharpe's Doom Bar. It's a 25-minute walk from your bell tent.

Opening Times

Usually an exclusive-hire wedding venue, Hadsham Farm is only open for glamping in 2020.

The Owner Says

Hello and welcome to our 'pop-up' lakeside glamping site. In a normal year, we are a stunning countryside Tipi wedding venue but because of CV-19 we have sadly had to cancel / postpone all of our events.

The venue is based around a small lake in a valley on our working farm in the northern Cotswolds. With stands of mature trees on both sides of the valley, the lake and the Tipis sit in a secluded natural amphitheatre. Whilst within easy access to local facilities (Banbury being the nearest town, 5 miles away), there is a real sense of peace and tranquility on the site.

Our glamping site for 2020 includes 8 Luxury Bell Tents pitched on or very close to the lakeside and an en-suite Shepherd's Hut tucked away in a elevated corner of the valley and overlooking the site. The site also includes the Tipi wedding venue itself (3 giant interlinked Nordic Tipis) as well as Shepherd's Hut toilets (ladies, gents and disabled) and showering facilities (3 cubicles and a small dressing room). Please note that the toilets are located adjacent to the main Tipi structure and may be a little walk from your Bell Tent - please see our overhead site layout photo for details. Drinking water is available on site.

Whilst the Bell Tent (£75 per night) and Shepherd's Hut (£100 per night) glamping accommodation are described in detail on another page, the Tipis themselves provide a large covered space which are guests are free to use should they need / wish to get away from any inclement weather. There is fairy lighting throughout and tables will be arranged and allocated to accommodation units - perhaps a good place to play a board game with a glass of wine (or two!). If you really need it, WiFi is available in the Tipis - text Rob for the access code :-)

A couple of quick notices -

1) the Tipis have been put up so that we can show prospective customers around the beautiful venue - mostly these take place at the weekends but in any event we do not intend on providing specific notice of these viewings. Will will not be showing them around any occupied accommodation units though, don't worry!

2) we have a pre-arranged photo-shoot at the venue on Wednesday the 26th August and the main Tipis will be out of action for most of the day.

Social Distancing Measures

We only have 9 glamping units on site (8 Bell Tents and 1 Shepherd's Hut) - all are spaced more than 10m apart. And with a maximum of 2 people per unit, there will be a maximum of 18 people on site. The Shepherd's Hut has an en-suite WC and shower. The Bell Tents will share our main toilet facilities - Ladies (4 cubicles); Gents (1 cubicle and 4 urinals); Disabled access WC - and our showering facilities - 3 cubicles.
