Adults-only glamping where just three shepherds’ huts and two bell tents share views of the Kent countryside and Whitstable coast

There’s been a bit of a buzz about the Kent coast for a while now. Perhaps nowhere more so than in Whitstable, just an hour-and-a-half outside London. But out in the countryside, overlooking this seaside staycationers’ dream town, there’s a buzz of a different kind – and it’s an altogether more natural one. It’s the sound of a re-wilding project that is returning farmers’ fields to English meadows in association with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and Natural England. And it’s not just the birds and the bees who are being welcomed to Ellenden Farm but a handful of lucky glampers too.

There are just three shepherds’ huts and two bell tents sharing a massive ten-acre meadow here. The view from their position at the top of it is rural fields all the way to the sea. The green of the fields and the blue of the sea may well be enough to tempt you here but, if you’re still undecided, how about the added attraction of a 200-acre woodland in which you’re free to wander? Come in springtime for bluebells as far as the eye can see… pure bliss, but shhh – don’t tell the kids. Ellenden Farm is adults only. Just the place for a quiet, nature-filled, grown-up getaway.

While there’s no denying that this is glamping, with beds made for you and cool box ice-packs replaced daily, in some ways this site is simple. There are no cooking facilities, save for a gas BBQ and fire pit outside each dwelling, and the site is off grid too. An old army tent with sofas, a washing-up sink and a composting loo complete the field’s facilities – though a flushing toilet and hot-water shower can be found in the farmyard, 600 metres away. This is, as Blair the site’s custodian says, a ‘country clinic’ – somewhere to get away from it all and re-charge the batteries while your mobile phone’s one runs out.

Should you wish to do more than enjoy the view, there’s plenty to see. Wander through Ellenden Woods to discover the young Victory Woodland Nature Reserve or to join the Crab and Winkle Way, from which you can hike or bike to Whitstable. It’s two miles to town where oysters, ice cream and flat whites are as easy to come by as the beach. The historic sights of Canterbury are five miles in the other direction. The Kent countryside in all its glory surrounds Ellenden Farm, with farm shops and gastropubs making the area a worthy honeypot for nature lovers and foodies.
