Adults-only glamping where just three shepherds’ huts and two bell tents share views of the Kent countryside and Whitstable coast

There’s been a bit of a buzz about the Kent coast for a while now. Perhaps nowhere more so than in Whitstable, just an hour-and-a-half outside London. But out in the countryside, overlooking this seaside staycationers’ dream town, there’s a buzz of a different kind – and it’s an altogether more natural one. It’s the sound of a re-wilding project that is returning farmers’ fields to English meadows in association with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and Natural England. And it’s not just the birds and the bees who are being welcomed to Ellenden Farm but a handful of lucky glampers too.

There are just three shepherds’ huts and two bell tents sharing a massive ten-acre meadow here. The view from their position at the top of it is rural fields all the way to the sea. The green of the fields and the blue of the sea may well be enough to tempt you here but, if you’re still undecided, how about the added attraction of a 200-acre woodland in which you’re free to wander? Come in springtime for bluebells as far as the eye can see… pure bliss, but shhh – don’t tell the kids. Ellenden Farm is adults only. Just the place for a quiet, nature-filled, grown-up getaway.

While there’s no denying that this is glamping, with beds made for you and cool box ice-packs replaced daily, in some ways this site is simple. There are no cooking facilities, save for a gas BBQ and fire pit outside each dwelling, and the site is off grid too. An old army tent with sofas, a washing-up sink and a composting loo complete the field’s facilities – though a flushing toilet and hot-water shower can be found in the farmyard, 600 metres away. This is, as Blair the site’s custodian says, a ‘country clinic’ – somewhere to get away from it all and re-charge the batteries while your mobile phone’s one runs out.

Should you wish to do more than enjoy the view, there’s plenty to see. Wander through Ellenden Woods to discover the young Victory Woodland Nature Reserve or to join the Crab and Winkle Way, from which you can hike or bike to Whitstable. It’s two miles to town where oysters, ice cream and flat whites are as easy to come by as the beach. The historic sights of Canterbury are five miles in the other direction. The Kent countryside in all its glory surrounds Ellenden Farm, with farm shops and gastropubs making the area a worthy honeypot for nature lovers and foodies.

Perfect glamping spot

We stayed at Ellenden Farm for 2 nights and had a wonderful time. We stayed in Bluebell tent which was delightful and had everything we needed. The seating outside was great, and the fire pit and marshmallows were an added bonus. Whitstable is very close and other coastal towns an easy drive away. We'll definitely visit again, thanks very much for having us!

Welcoming and relaxing

Very attentive host who clearly puts a lot of thought and effort in. All the facilities you could want, at great quality. Even though we felt no need to leave the site, there are also great surroundings to explore.

relaxing and well looked after

Two of us stayed in Poppy hut last week for 3 nights. We were well looked after by Blair who went out of his way to making sure everything was as it should be, and in a friendly manner, including helping out with car problems-gave us jump start after car battery flattened when charging mobile phone on the site and charged my phone as it had run out of battery.[worth taking rapid car phone charger or mains charger which you can plug in to mains at cafe when you go out as no mains electric on site, if you use phone for anything other than odd phone call]. Outside sofa, fire pit, BBQ, and accommodation all excellent, with spare gas container for kettle boiling in Poppy provided.Clean cutlery, cups plates , etc. all provided ,including tea coffee sugar, and milk and water in ice box. All in all I can highly recommend this accommodation and organiser.

Beautiful location and relaxing

Great set up. Quiet and peaceful. Tents are well equipped. Walk to Whitstable Harbour took us just over an hour. Rather hilly though. Beautiful sunsets from the tent we stayed in and clear sky’s at night to see the carpet of stars.

Peaceful and pretty

We stayed in Bluebell, the bell tent, for a long weekend and really enjoyed it. The campsite is well-located for visiting local towns and attractions but feels very peaceful. Each pitch has plenty of space around it and is well equipped with lovely touches such as fresh flowers. Blair was very welcoming and we had a really comfortable stay despite some patchy weather. The attention to detail is what makes this place special and I would recommend it.

Fab place to relax and switch off

We stayed for three nights in the Bluebell tent. Blair, our host, worked really hard to make sure everything was perfect. He showed us around on arrival, explained how to use everything and then popped by each day just to check everything was okay. Our bell tent was very comfortable with a double bed and included lovely touches such as fresh flowers and battery powered lighting in the tent which was very atmospheric (and extremely useful after dark!). Everything we needed was provided, immediately outside the tent which was for our sole use, was a sofa, table and chairs and gas fired BBQ. Blair left milk and ice in a cool box and the ice was replenished every day. Tea, coffee, sugar marshmallows were also provided, and logs for the fire pit for the first night. Hot showers and a flushing toilet are there if you want them, though the composting toilet was spotless. The whole experience was really special and we are intending to return next year. Highly recommend Ellenden Farm Glamping if you are looking for peace, quiet and getting off grid for a few days.

Recently stayed for a long weekend with my girlfriend and had a really great time. Blair was a very accommodating and helpful host, the bell tent was full of nice little touches like fresh flowers, marshmallows for the fire pit and lots more. The setting is beautiful with sea views and woodland for nice long walks. We had a super relaxing weekend and will certainly want to come back - highly recommended!!

An idyllic and stunning getaway!

Living in London, we needed to get away from the daily grind and this was the perfect getaway! Blair is a brilliant host and makes you feel very welcome and relaxed. Even with some rain, the location and experience was nothing short of amazing! The marshmallows were a lovely treat too! :)

Laid back and relaxing

We arrived met by Blair, who gave us a quick tour of the site, explaining about the location and surrounding area. The Shepherds Huts were nicely spaced for privacy and were very smartly presented, with everything we needed for our 2 day stay. The welcome pack of milk, tea, coffee and marshmallows, was very much appreciated but the bags of ice in the cool box, topped up the following day, was a nice touch The toilet facilities were compost toilets, which are great for the environment, were clean, with plenty of hand sanitizers available. The shower block was clean and refreshing, with a regular toilet, if this is what you needed. Beautiful open field with woodland surrounding, with plenty of wildlife, which included several different types of Butterfly. Our highlight was watching the young kestrels being taught how to hunt by their parents and our particular favourites, watching the Buzzards floating naturally on the thermals. We can go on and on about how lovely this little gem is, from the view of the estuary to watching the sunset, each night but would recommend going to check it out for yourself. Thanks Blair, keep up the great effort!

Absolutely outstanding

I booked this get away for my parents 30th wedding anniversary. On there return the owner kindly put a complimentary bottle of champagne on ice in the hut. They had such an amazing time and loved everything about it. Everything was to such a high standard and really didn’t want to leave. They’re planning on booking another stay with you shortly. Thank you so much

Brilliant relaxing weekend spent BBQing & swimming

The facilities at Ellenden farm are amazing - the field feels very private and you each get your own BBQ, dining table, sofa and firepit. We stayed for a weekend and loved having BBQ bacon breakfasts in the sun, and s’mores at night. Lots of nice little touches like fresh ice in the cooler and vintage plates. We walked in the forest and then along the Crab and Winkle way down to Whitstable, where we went swimming. I’d definitely come back and stay for even longer next time. Great for switching off.
