A dog-friendly log cabin and shepherd's hut in a peaceful woodland meadow, less than an hour outside London and easy to reach by train.

Winston Churchill knew it, Anne Boleyn knew it and Henry VIII knew it, too: West Kent is a great place to escape from London. These days you don’t have to be an aristocrat to enjoy a weekend away in the peaceful Kent countryside — thanks to places like White Hill Woods. It just so happens that this boutique glamping site is within a half-hour drive of the stately pads once frequented by those historic big wigs and is now open to the public. There’s Hever Castle, Penshurst Place, Lullingstone and Chartwell. It’s also within walking distance of a vineyard, two pubs and a little museum. All this and it's also only a short drive away from a lovely lavender farm — and three minutes’ walk from the nearest train station. And did we mention there’s a heated swimming pool on-site (Open Easter to end of October)? If country life appeals but you live in the city, it doesn’t get much better than this.

An improbably short hop from London by train or car will get you to White Hill Woods, where a single log cabin and a shepherd’s hut sit in a lovely woodland meadow. This is a family-run affair in the grounds of a family home and while it’s suitably family-friendly — the lodge sleeps up to five and a swing set and trampoline is located in the communal-access garden — it’s also great for couples. In addition to the play equipment, there’s a fire pit area for barbecues, views and walks into the nearby Kentish Downs and, of course, that heated pool.

White Hill Lodge is called a log cabin, and from outside it offers that charm, but it's really much more than that. It’s a fully-equipped but compact holiday cottage for self-catering stays. We’re talking Freesat TV, electric log burner, WiFi, rainfall shower and more. The only concession to camping is what’s outside and the mezzanine double bedroom. Over at White Hill Hut, things are a little cosier, as you’d expect for a shepherd’s hut that’s been designed for couples. It is, however, still self-contained with an en-suite shower, loo, its own kitchenette and private outdoor seating.

Whichever accommodation you choose, White Hill Woods is a comfy countryside bolthole that’s so easy to reach from London that it’s tempting to talk about it the other way around. The brief 10-minute drive to the M25 and three-minute walk to the train station means that you could actually use this as a base from which to visit the city. But that would be to miss the local charms and, with so much so close by, you definitely wouldn’t want to do that.

White Hill Lodge
The perfect car-free nature break!
Stayed at Dom's Lodge (cabin/cottage) for two nights for a quick nature getaway from London. It is the most perfect car-free trip: the house really is a 3-minute walk from the train station but is quiet and tucked away. It's in a sweet village with a few places to eat and a small shop for groceries. Plenty of beautiful hikes outside the doorstep. Everything possible to enjoy on foot. Our dog loved it too!

Superb weekend getaway
What a great find for a couple of weary Londoners looking to recharge our batteries. The location is sublime - just a couple of minutes walk from the station but in a beautiful, tranquil valley settings. You can head off on woodland walks right from the property which offer stunning views over the area. The lodge is thoughtfully designed and well appointed, and the host was attentive and helpful. We'll be back soon to enjoy the lodge in other seasons too!

Weekend getaway at White Hill
We had a great time at White Hill Lodge. It's beautifully done and in a lovely setting. A swim in the heated outdoor pool was an added bonus. Having the basics like milk, tea and coffee was very helpful, with extras of apple juice and biscuits a kind touch. The lodge is easily accessible via public transport but still enables you to feel like you've escaped the rat race. We'll hopefully be back.

Absolutely Perfect
We have just stayed at the lovely White Hill Woods. Our stay was absolutely perfect. Our host left us throughful treats, recemended where to visit. We had pizza at The Mount Vinyerd best we have tasted in ages with lovely service and children friendly. Their wine is delicious! Our host Dom checked we were ok And we most certainly were. We loved the let it was so clean and just perfect. The gardens are lovely and if it had been dryer we would have enjoyed the fire pit. We have already told our friends its a must book and plan to return. The Samuel Palmer Pub looked very good so will try this next time. We visited Hever Castle but there is still so much in this beautiful area to visit. Do not hesitate in booking here you will not be disappointed. Thank you to Dom and everyone who has worked so hard to make this holiday let a very special stay for people. Kathy

From the host
The Legg family have lived at White Hill Cottage for over 20 years, and friends who came to visit them always remarked on how beautiful and secluded the property is, yet how easily reached by road and rail - Shoreham Station is a 2-minute walk away! Dom and Emma have spent the last 3 years making their dream of hosting guests here a reality, notwithstanding a global pandemic and having a third baby along the way. White Hill Woods is nestled up a bridleway, surrounded by fields and woodlands. Our two dog-friendly properties - White Hill Lodge and White Hill Shepherd's Hut - share a beautiful meadow, which includes a swing, trampoline and large fire pit perfect for barbecues or toasting marshmallows on. Guests are also welcome to use our outdoor, heated swimming pool for 1.5 hours a day, all year round. The historic village of Shoreham is a short walk away, and you'll be spoilt for choice with traditional pubs and the award-winning Mount Vineyard to try out. This area of Kent is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and you can walk directly up onto the North Downs from the gate of White Hill Woods. You won't be short of exciting things to do, with the UK's largest lavender producer Castle Farm, Lullingstone Roman Villa, Lullingstone World Garden and Eagle Heights Wildlife Foundation all a short drive away, to name but a few.
Nearby attractions
The beautiful, historic village of Shoreham is a short walk away (less than half a mile) and home to cafes, pubs, The Mount Vineyard, where you can taste locally-grown wines and Shoreham Aircraft Museum (01959 524416). You can also walk straight from the site into the Otford Hills or Darent Valley. The UK's largest lavender producer, Castle Farm, is a short drive (less than two miles) away and worth a visit all year round, especially during lavender season (in June and July). If history is your thing, Lullingstone Roman Villa (01322 863 467) and Lullingstone Castle and World Garden (01322 862114) are just outside the neighbouring village of Eynsford, four miles from site. The nearby Eagle Heights Wildlife Foundation (01322 866 577) is also worth a visit for its bird of prey flying displays and unusual animals. Further afield, stunning castles and historic houses abound: Hever Castle (01732 865224), Penshurst Place (01892 870307) and Chartwell (01732 868381) are some of your host's favourites and all within 20 miles of site.
Food and drink
The Mount Vineyard (01959 524008) in Shoreham offers home-grown wines, wood-fired pizza and locally sourced ice cream in a stunning setting, with a retractable roof making it perfect for all weathers.
