Waterside camping and glamping with activities on offer, easily reached from central London

"A place of rest and retreat." That's how the team at Redricks describe the place, saying "you can do as much or as little as you want." Once here, though, and you see how many activities are on offer it's hard to imagine you won't want to get stuck in. From the inflatable waterpark floating on the lake, perfect for children full of energy, to more tranquil wild swimming in its waters, there's plenty to keep a camper busy. And despite the setting, amid trees and lake-side meadows, it's somehow just half an hour from central London.

A 25-minute walk from Harlow train station, where regular trains zip in and out of Liverpool Street, Redricks is an oddly rural-feeling campsite despite its location on the edge of a town. If you’re camping, you’ll be setting up your own tent in one of the 'lakeview' spots, where the clue's in the name. The flat field is sheltered by tall trees, dotted around the edges, with gaps revealing the water. If you’re glamping in one of the pre-pitched bell tents, meanwhile, you’ll face a more difficult choice: Do you choose a tent in the open field or pluck for a woodland abode, set among young willow and alder trees? The bell tents come in a range of sizes, with the very largest sleeping an impressive 10 people under the eight-metre-diameter canvas, and all feature mattresses and wood-burning stoves.

The mix of woods and different lakes (there are three in total) and the River Stort running alongside, make the place ripe for exploring. Open water swimming is particularly popular, while little'uns will love running around in the woods. But there's also more organised fun. Local group Ishvari Yoga offer on-site classes, while Skill-At-Arms offer clay-pigeon shooting in a separate area of the farm and, if you've been watching others swim but feel you need a little encouragement, open-water swimming classes can be arranged too.

Elsewhere, you can walk to the market town of Sawbridgeworth and follow footpaths to a clutch of decent country pubs. The tow-path beside the River Stort is a sensible place to start. It makes up part of the Stort Valley Way, a pleasant walking route that's also ideal for cycling when it's not too busy. In fact, if you're really got the legs for it, you can cycle west from the campsite and join the River Lee, riding in to (or out of) central London in around two or three hours.

The site has three different areas for glamping, an open site near the lake, a woodland site and a forest site. There are showers, toilets and mobile washing up sinks in the fields and cold drinking water, as well as kitchen facilities and a BBQ at each glamping unit. Each bell tent has firepits in the open field but not in the wooded areas. The bell tents for guests who are glamping also have comfortable mattresses and a wood burner.

Glampers, campers, tents, dogs, kids – yes. Campervans, motorhomes, caravans – no.

It's a 10-minute drive into Sawbridgeworth (or a lovely gentle half-hour walk beside the River Stort following the Stort Valley Way). In town, take a look around the Tudor House Gallery (01279 600112), gathering treats for yourself from the gift shop, or visit some of the many antique shops in the town. If activities are more your style, then you can make use of the various riding stables that are dotted around Sawbridgeworth and Harlow. Hoskins Farm Riding Stables (01279722165) is less than 10 minutes' drive away and caters for all experience levels. The art gallery, Parndon Mill (01279426042) is also nearby taking just over 10 minutes to reach, they have lots of arts and crafts exhibitions and also host various art classes throughout the week.

Half an hour's walk will also get you to The Plume of Feathers (01279 424154), where they have a new stone-baked pizza oven and a patio with an outdoor bar, and The Dusty Miller (01279424180) – both are in nearby Gilston.
