Well-equipped bell tent accommodation with a new location for 2021 in a quiet corner of a New Forest farm

People have been living in Godshill in the New Forest since prehistoric times. And many of them in tents too. There was an iron-age camp here, the headquarters of an early Scouting-like movement called ‘the Order of Woodcraft Chivalry’ and, in the early 19th century, there was even a very particular holly tree where roaming gypsies used to gather. Things have rather moved on today and, while nomadic campers will still find campsites in which to pitch, Godshill is also home to more 21st-century comforts in the form of Arniss Bell Tents – a sight for sore eyes if you don’t fancy pitching a tent of your own.

Set in a quiet paddock behind a farmhouse, Arniss Bell Tents comprises a collection of just six pre-pitched abodes, each with a campfire pit, a picnic table and some round-the-fire timber seating. Inside, expect that classic camping splash of bunting, fairy lights and lanterns, as well as a host of glamping comforts that include a compact kitchen cabinet with all the basics you need to get cooking and a much appreciated welcome pack (think tea, coffee, milk and a few other surprises). Outside, meanwhile, glampers have showers and portable loos a short stroll away, plus use of a 'proper' loo in the farm court yard. There's also a marquee kitchen with hot water and a dishwashing sink and fridge/freezer, with extra sockets for mobile phone charging.

On the western edge of the New Forest, Arniss Bell Tents are well placed for getting out on foot or by bike and discovering the network of car-free trails the national park has to offer. You only need walk through the paddock gate and on to local footpaths before you start spotting New Forest ponies grazing along the verge and it’s only a ten-minute stroll to the nearest (excellent) local pub. Not that you should stop your walk at that point. Persevere – it’s worth it – to see deer and other wildlife along the Lady’s Mile footpath or walk down to the little suspension bridge across a particular pretty stretch of the River Avon.

If you want to leave the boundaries of the New Forest, it’s a half-hour drive to Bournemouth Beach, 20 minutes to Salisbury (a good bet on a rainy day) and 35 minutes to Stonehenge. Just make sure you’re back by evening time, when campfires glow across the paddock, children rest their weary heads and a renewing sense of calm falls upon the meadow – a soporific ambience that’s well worth savouring.

Details

Facilities

The bell tents are set on six levelled out pitches in a gentle sloping paddock behind the popular Arniss Farmhouse holiday let in Godshill. There are two flushing portable-style toilets, one 'proper' toilet and two shower cubicles. There is a communal kitchen marquee with dishwashing, phone charging and a fridge/freezer. Each bell tent has its own firepit, low bench and a picnic table. Every tent is fully-equipped, which includes bedding and kitchen equipment. The elevated position of the paddock offers good views of the surrounding New Forest.

Suitable For

Arniss Bell Tents are suitable for bell tent glampers only. Dogs are permitted, though not on beds or furniture.

Nearby

Arniss Bell Tents is two miles from Fordingbridge and half a mile (a 10-minute walk) from Sandy Balls Holiday Park (08442 491193), home to all the extra amenities you might fancy (including a swimming pool, bike hire and children's playgrounds). There are a number of good cycle routes running directly into the heart of the New Forest – keep your eyes peeled for the wild ponies and deer this area is so famous for. By car the Beaulieu Estate is worth a visit, home to a fabulous motor museum (01590 612345), or head to Paultons Park (02380 814442), a popular family attraction and home to Peppa Pig World. The New Forest Wildlife Park (02380 292408) is also a rightful favourite, home to a range of animals native to the British Isles. It's a few miles east of Lyndhurst just off the A35.

Food & Drink

Great local pub The Fighting Cocks (01425 652462) is a five-minute stroll away and serves food and ales all day long, with a popular pub garden that overlooks the heathland. Within three miles there are a further three great pubs – The Horse and Groom (01725 510739) at Woodgreen, The Foresters Arms (01425 652294) at Frogham and the The Royal Oak (01425 652244) at North Gorley – while The George (01425 652040) at Fordingbridge is a fantastic riverside spot. The Owner Says

Back in 2009 I started a wonderful 28 day pop up campsite within the New Forest. After six fantastic years I hung up my campsite hat to launch a self catering holiday lets business - Arniss Holidays. Last year I trialled 6 Bell Tents within the campsite with great feedback. This year I am delighted to be back offering the 6 Touareg Bell Tents in a brand new exclusive location in the paddock behind Arniss Farmhouse holiday let. The tents will be situated on levelled pitches.  The fully equipped Bell Tents comfortably sleeps 5 making it perfect for families and couples looking for a camping holiday with a touch of luxury. The paddock offers 2 showers, 2 portaloo style toilets, a kitchen area with a washing up sink, fridge/freezer phone charging and electric point - not to mention direct access to the New Forest, stunning views and a short walk to a pub. There is also a flushing toilet in the court yard just a few steps from the paddock.

Brilliant

Have arrived home after a five night stay at Arniss Bell Tents having really enjoyed ourselves (me, husband and two kids). So appreciated just being able to turn up and have pretty much everything we needed already there, set up and lovely and clean. Sarah and Shaun were so friendly and helpful and made the whole place a calm and friendly atmosphere. Our kids loved running about on the site and in the nearby paddock and it gave us brilliant access to the New Forest and all that has to offer. If only they could guarantee the weather it would be perfect 👌! It was just brilliant having a decent sink to wash up in, kettle to boil for quick cuppas and reliable hot water in the showers. I think my only recommendation is to have a complete list available beforehand of what is provided in the tent as I would have made sure to bring one or two other things that weren't provided. However, Sarah and Shaun were always happy to help/lend so not too much of a problem. Also the cooker is only one ring burner which posed a couple of challenges when cooking for a family of 4. Thoroughly recommended for a camping holiday with added comforts and luxuries thrown in. Thank you so much Sarah and Shaun - no doubt we will return! 😊

Amazing ,Comfy Friendly and Warm

Friendly welcome by the couple Sarah and Sean :) An amazing location and clean facilities including an area for hairdryer and makeup , On this occasion we took our children and a dog Dogs had a great time at the enclosed campsite as they met with others at camp often off leash Children too had great family time as areas to play next to the tents and in the paddocks The Canp fire was the best !! each night the children had sticks of marshmallows which they held over the camp fire 🔥 Noise was also limited only until 11 pm so families were able to rest well Nearby shop as a last minute amenities is also available walking distance Pubs were also walking distance from the campsite Definitely worth a visit again :) as we had an amazing time

Lovely location and great facilities

The New Forest is amazing and this was the perfect spot for a quiet family retreat to enjoy the local area. It was very clean and comfy and the scenery was stunning. We were well looked after and the owners were very helpful. My only reservation about going again is that it's not very private. All the tents face the same way and everyone walking up from the communal area looks directly at the seating area in front of each pitch. If you're ok with that, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Perfect

My mum children and myself had the best time, these guys have really thought of everything to make your stay perfect, all the little touches were brilliant, I particularly loved all the potted plants and fairy lights. The practical things were amazing too. I also highly recommend the tuk tuk ride. Thank you for such a wonderful time we will be back x

Super glamping experience!

Set in beautiful surroundings with stunning scenery all around the site, I am pleased to say the photo gallery doesn't do this place justice! I was content to sit and soak it all in every day! The tents were well-equipped, the bed was comfortable, the facilities were great and the hosts were welcoming. There's enough space for children to spread their wings a little while still being in eyeshot too, which is important. We'll book again for sure - thank you!

Fabulous place!

We had such a great time at Arniss Bell Tents - could not recommend it more highly. I think others have done a great job of describing the facilities - the site is safe and clean and there are so many thoughtful touches, from the electric charging tower in the communal kitchen to the great bed and fairy lights in the tent! We had a huge storm while we were there and the tent withstood the wind and rain without a single wobble - we were cosy and secure throughout! The kids loved exploring the site and there are plenty of great options for days out nearby - we particularly loved the playground in Fordingbridge which had a paddling pool and you could also wade in the River Avon! There's also a pub nearby with a playground for the kids. Highly recommended.

Lovely, relaxing stay with lots of amenities and first class hosts

We’ve just returned from a 3 night stay at Arniss Bell Tents and we’ve had a really nice family break. The tents are very well equipped. You get a cute little kitchenette with everything in it you need including cooking bowls, utensils and even matches. There’s a gas stove and kettle but an added bonus is a communal area with an electric kettle if, like us, you need a coffee ASAP on waking! The double bed was really comfortable, two stretcher beds for the kids, rugs, lamps and twinkling fairy lights inside. Outside there is a picnic bench and sunshade umbrella, a fire pit and low level benches to make the most of the fire pit. You can purchase wood and charcoal from the owners. The communal bit was a real bonus, freezer to freeze your ice blocks and a fridge to use. Washing up facilities, phone charging points and, as mentioned previously, an electric kettle. The toilets were porta-loos and the cleanest ones I’ve ever used. There are two very well laid out showers with plenty of hot water. There’s also a bonus of a flushing loo and hairdryer available too. The whole site is very well thought out and the owners couldn’t do enough to help us with any queries we had. Would definitely recommend and can’t thank Sarah enough for her wonderful hospitality.

Brilliant. No more could be asked.

An absolutely brilliant time was had by all. Well organised, friendly and welcoming, Sean and Sarah have done a marvellous job of making a bijou glamping site with everything you could want, and a lot more that you didn’t know campsites could or would include. The showers are awesome. The only drawback is that the portaloos can be a bit smelly but the supplied febreeze solves that issue.

One Bell of a Stay!

My family and I had a fantastic stay at Arniss Bell Tents. The site and facilities are top quality and well thought out - the 'porcelain toilet option' and the hairdryer in 'Sarah's Salon' were particular plusses for my ladies! Sarah and Shaun were very friendly and helpful hosts and did everything to make it a wonderful experience. There are so many pubs and things to see in the locality - Shaun's Tuk Tuk Tour is a highly recommended quirky and fun way to get your bearings!

Great stay in the forest!

Thank you Sarah + Shaun for a brilliant stay at Arniss Bell Tents. The campsite is beautifully located with the tents themselves so well equipped with lots of thoughtful amenities. As a novice camper I couldn’t believe how comfortable our bed was. Our daughter loved running around the ample green space and we had a gorgeous evening sat around the fire pit with a delicious take away from the local pub (The Horse & Groom) and toasting the complimentary marshmallows. We even enjoyed a Tuk Tuk ride which is a perfect way to explore the New Forest. Thoroughly recommended!

Fantastic place for a holiday !

We had a short break here alongside my brother and his family. The tents were spacious and the pitches well spaced and kitted out. The owners were very friendly and helpful and always available. We walked, cycled and swam at the beach and at the water park. Really enjoyed my first holiday in over a year. Thank you. I hope we will come again.

Perfect half term camping holiday

Our family (2 adults, 2 kids and the dog) have just returned from 5 wonderful days at Arniss Bell Tents. The camp site is located well off any main roads down a quiet lane, so you wake up to the sound of bird song and maybe the odd whinnying of the horses in the nearby field. There are just 6 bell tents in the field which means you don’t feel over-crowded and everyone has enough space and privacy. There is a large area in the centre of the field to relax & play games. The bell tents are beautiful and come well equipped for either grilling on the camp fire or using the gas burner supplied. Our children report that their camp beds were comfortable and our ‘proper’ bed (mattress and duvet) was great to climb into after a day of fun in the forest or at the beach. The showers were simply lovely and I appreciated having access to a proper toilet too! Sarah and Shaun (and Sarah’s dad, Richard) are absolutely lovely and so helpful. They recommended some great walks and places for us to visit. We booked a ride in one of Shaun’s tuk-tuks for a tour of the local area of forest which was a fab addition to our stay. All in all a perfect place to relax and unplug from the world for a while, without having to think about every piece of camping equipment to have a special, relaxing break! I’m sure we’ll be back, thank you Sarah and Shaun for a really lovely stay. Alex, Phil, Gracie and James (and Westley 🐶)

Wonderful weekend break

We arrived on the Saturday with a two year old and four year old boy, neither of which had camped before. After three nights both absolutely loved it. We were greeted with a warm welcome and given all the information we could need, and directed to our spacious bell tent, perfectly cleaned, well stocked and ready for a weekend of fun! The facilities were clean and well maintained, everything we could need was available (including the popular tuk tuk ride around the site, fish and chip van and, of course, ice cream van!) and everyone working on the site was happy and helpful. Plus the location was perfect for ventures to see the ponies locally, and drive further afield to the seaside and attractions. Hope to return next summer.

The holiday of all holidays.

I stayed in the bell tents with 4 of my other friends over the bank holiday weekend and we just didn’t want to leave. The two lovely people that run it are so friendly and always happy to help. Gave us extra blankets when we needed and provided the loveliest welcome basket. The camp site is right in the middle of it all so you have glorious walks near by and a sun set in the distance when around your camp fire in the evenings. The camp site has a lovely feel and one of our favourite parts was relaxing round the camp fire in the evening with marshmallows. Although, make sure you stay away from the local pub for food. Drinks yes, food no! Haha! Overall my friends and I felt truly relaxed and refreshed after a weekend in the beautiful new forest, we didn’t want to leave. Thank you Chapelfield camping.

A Perfect Way to Camp in the New Forest

My wife and I had a delightful three days camping with Arniss Bell Tents. The tents had everything we needed. For other supplies, campground and the local shops in Fordingbridge were well stocked. The tents were super comfortable and the bed was practically like being at home. Our hosts, Sarah and the rest of the staff, were very accommodating and we even won a hamper from Harvey's through Cool Camping. It was a very nice surprise! The campground is near loads of trails and neighbouring villages. If outdoor cooking is your thing, the fire pit, gas stove and included kitchen equipment have everything you need. If you don't want to cook, there were a number of pubs within a short walk or drive. If you want to read or play games in the tent after dark, you might consider bringing and extra light source; the lamps in the tent were perfect for settling in at night, but not super bright for other uses. Otherwise, the tents had everything we needed and more. All in all, it was a perfect trip and a beautiful setting. Highly recommended.

Highly recommend, will be back!

Me and my three girls aged 7, 10 and 15 all loved glamping! We had such a blast sitting round the firepit each evening toasting marshmallows to make smores and heating up hot chocolate. The facilities were clean and well kitted out. Sarah was attentive and very pleasant to deal with. It was the best of both worlds; the camping feel for the kids and the luxury of not having to erect and put away a tent in the rain for mum!

Lovely 3 night stay

We had a lovely couple of days staying in the semi furnished Bell Tent at Chapelfield’s. We enjoyed discovering the local area, highly recommend going to the fighting coma and seeing the donkeys. Loved having marshmallows at the fire pit and enjoyed the little welcome pack Sarah left us. I also liked the little pop up tent where you could wash up and use the charging devices. In all a lovely stay and will go again. The only downside was that the toilets could of had the soap replenished and not always clean. This is only a small thing as loved our tent and withstood rain and wind. Xxx

Camping trio at Arniss Bell Tent

We had a lovely few days staying in one of the semi-furnished Bell tents. I loved the little welcome pack that Sarah left us and we thoroughly enjoyed using the fire pit. My kids loved exploring the local area visiting the donkeys down the road at the fighting cocks and going to the beach. The only thing I would say was the toilets were not that clean and would of liked there to have had the hand soap replenished. Apart from that it was great. Will go again. X

Amazing!

This was such an amazing experience many lovely family memories made. The tents, toilets and showers are immaculate. The children absolutely loved the fairy lights inside the tents and enjoyed having marshmallows on the fire pit. Sarah and the team couldn't have beenn more friendly and helpful. Plenty of space in the tent even with a cot alongside the beds already set out. Our first experience of glamping and we can't wait to return. Every little detail had been thought of and Sarah went over and above to help us out. Thank you! ☺

Lovely Experience

Just returned from a lovely 3 night stay at the Chapelfield campsite in the New Forest, in one of the Arniss Bell Tents. We opted for the unfurnished option as we had all the essential camping equipment. The site is lovely, clean and staff very friendly and attentive, nothing is too much trouble. Would thoroughly recommend, thanks for an enjoyable stay x

Fantastic!

I am NOT a camper, but my family and friends have just spent a great weekend staying in the bell tents at Chapelfield. The tents were immaculate and spacious, I especially loved the duvet on the bed, the welcome pack was fantastic and the wood, for the firepits was beyond expectation. Sarah couldn't have done any more to make our stay any more comfortable. I would also recommend taking a tuk-tuk from Sean, for a tour around the New Forest or as a lift to the pub, awesome fun! We will be going back!

Amazing Bell Tent Experience

Our first experience staying in a bell tent and won’t be our last. My husband and our two younger children loved it!!! Will definitely return and have been telling all my friends to visit too!!

Fantastic fully furnished bell tents.

We stayed as a family of five in a fully furnished bell tent, it had all the equipment you could ever need and the bonus of a double bed with mattress and quilt. Very clean facilities and a friendly campsite. Sarah and Sean made our stay complete by being so attentive and providing us with whatever we needed. We took the Tuk Tuk tour with Sean around The New Forest which meant we could sit back and see all the animals up close and local beauty spots. Children absolutely loved it and he even dropped us off and picked us up from a local pub to enjoy an evening dining out. I would thoroughly recommend staying here as you will want for nothing and it’s a beautiful part of the country. Don’t hesitate to book.
