East Sussex eco glamping with hot tubs

In this glamping age of treehouses, shepherd’s huts and two-storey timber pods, the classic under-canvas experience of sleeping in a bell tent can often feel a little left behind. Not so at Hadlow Hideaways, a private glamping getaway in the High Weald AONB, 35 minutes from the south coast. On the edge of a private wood in East Sussex, this collection of creamy bell tents offers a perfect nod to camping of old – think campfires, little gas stoves and fold-out camping chairs – whilst also firmly providing for the modern glamping family. Each of the bell tents has its very own kitchen shack and an ‘en suite’ toilet and shower room, for example, while, inside there’s a king-sized bed and a wood-burning stove. Oh, and did we mention that every tent has an accompanying hot tub?

Much of the comfort of camping here is owed to site’s hosts Natalie and Conor. Not only are they friendly and knowledgeable about the local area – they can give pointers to the old Victorian pub in Hadlow Down, perhaps, or recommend a good walk in the South Downs – but their attention to detail is second to none. On starry nights you’ll find the telescope they have provided comes in handy. Children will love the toy box. On rainy days there are books and card games. And their welcome hampers, full of homegrown and home-baked goodies, are a godsend. You’d think they’d have been managing campsites for decades, not a couple of years.

While the site is small and exclusive – there are just five tents in total, two of which are larger ‘emperor’ tents that can sleep up to six people – you’re not the only guests: There’s a drift of pigs and a clutch of chickens, as well as plenty of wildlife. Natalie is only too happy to rally little’uns in the morning to help her as she feeds the animals and collects the eggs, while the best of their own produce can be purchased in a handy breakfast hamper.

Elsewhere, there’s plenty to keep you busy within easy reach. It’s 15 minutes to the South Downs, 35 minutes to the Seven Sisters Country Park or Birling Gap and 40 minutes to Brighton. Despite intentions, however, many glampers find themselves staying put for hours instead. Whether it’s admiring the view, reading the paper or soaking in the hot tub, Hadlow Hideaways is often a good place to sit back and do nothing at all.

Suitable For

Glamping only. Dogs are not permitted.

In the High Weald AONB, there’s plenty of good walking on the doorstep, not least to one of the local pubs (see Food & Drink). Further afield, it’s a 15-minute drive to Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum (01825 840573) – a multi-faceted family attraction where there’s also an estate to explore and a huge wildfowl collection – while Sheffield Park, the other side of Uckfield, is a magnificent National Trust garden, from where steam trains run to East Grinstead on the Bluebell Railway (01825 720800). If it's raining, you might consider a trip to the Jacobean mansion of Rudyard Kipling, Bateman's, in nearby Burwash, while, on particularly sunny days, the coast probably calls. It’s 40 minutes to the seaside around Eastbourne and Birling Gap, while it’s 50 to Brighton and Hastings respectively. And, if you’re interested in 1066 history, the battle of Hastings actually took place in Battle, 30 minutes by car.

Food & Drink

It’s a three-minute drive of 25-minute walk to The Grove Farmhouse Café (01825 890415), a light, glass-fronted old building with farm shop fayre alongside the café. The pond-side Blackboys Inn (01825 890283) is a touch further down the road, though, in the opposite direction, it’s a five-minute drive and 30-minute walk to Hadlow Down where the old red-brick pub, built in 1885, wins on the history front. It has listed status and retains many of its original interior fittings and features, all much lorded over in pub guides and CAMRA circles. At the rear right is ‘the snug’, a small carpeted room with a bar billiards table, while in the main area the spartan public bar fittings are much as they were in Victorian times with a wood-block floor and a long Victorian counter.

Peaceful & Idilic getaway

We stayed for just 2 nights, but wished we could have stayed longer! The venue was amazing, the tent and set up was great and the hot tub was the icing on the cake. The weather whilst we were there was perfect, even got a sun tan in late September (so lucky) We will definitely be returning next year and the hosts were brilliant.

We had the loveliest time in this beautiful setting. The bell tent is gorgeous and the hot tub is such a treat. Being set back in a field alone with nature was fabulous. Our two young kids loved running round and exploring even the drizzly weather didn't put us off! Lots to do around you (short travelling distance) to keep kids occupied but to be honest they were happy in the hot tub and field most of the time. Friendly hosts who were more than happy to host we definitely want to return

Lovely views from a comfy well equipped tent

We are a family of four, our boys are eight and 12. We had a couple of days of fine weather and one rainy windy day for our three night stay. Hadlow Hideaway only has one tent at the moment so you get total seclusion as the only guests. We've never been the only guests at a campsite before so were momentarily surprised but we soon got into it. The bell tent is lovely, the double bed super comfy and the bedding plenty warm enough. The log burner in the tent makes it all very toasty in the evening. The kitchen area is well set up with everything you need but do remember ice blocks, we didn't bring cold ones but got some bags of ice from the petrol station up the road so all fine. The toilet is a soil eco-style set up and the gas shower has plenty of hot water. The dressing gowns provided were a nice touch. The tent is pitched on a wooden deck which has lovely views over the countryside. There's a BBQ and you can buy charcoal from Conor. As for the hot tub, don't know if we're just a family who get very excited by hot tubs, but we just loved it and spent hours in there during the day and evening, it's brilliantly positioned so you have the views while you're in it and Conor provided all the wood to keep it going which was great. He popped by briefly about 7 each evening just to check we were OK and we rang him one day for more wood which he delivered straightaway, other than that he left us to ourselves, which was all good. We bought the breakfast hamper which contained sausages, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, orange juice and a loaf of bread, all very nice. We had lunch in the historic Blackboys Pub on the rainy day which was v good although no children's menu. We found a great walk on the local footpaths on farmland, we did about 5 miles and saw wild deer, birds of prey, rabbits, herons, woodpeckers and squirrels. We were exhausted in the evenings but we did hear some owls so if you have the energy to stay up there'd be even more nature to behold. We had a lovely time.

Wonderful place to stay

A really nice tent hidden tent in the middle of nowhere, lovely owners who have made the place look so nice. Really good being able to use the kitchen area as well as a cool hot tub! Would definitely recommend to anyone (especially those wanting to take a break from camping!)

Lovely owners

I went to stay here for a weekend with some friends. The owners were nothing but kind and polite to us, and really made our stay worthwhile. One of our group uses a feeding tube which needed charging during our visit, and Connor charged it for us at his house so that we wouldn’t need to cut our stay short. He also let us see and pet his pigs, which we all really enjoyed. The yurt was beautifully set up and very comfortable, with a kitchen with all the tools we needed. It was very windy and rainy on the weekend we were there, but luckily the yurt kept us cosy and dry. The wood burning stove and the hot tub were also really enjoyable. Overall we all had a lovely time and definitely plan on coming back soon.

Perfect escape from everything

We stayed a couple of nights and it was absolutely LOVELY. The setting is beautiful, completely peaceful, not a house or road in sight, and we had the whole field to ourselves. The tent is luxurious, light and well appointed, with a comfy double bed. The two single futons are a little thin, but we doubled one up so it was fine. There's a log burner and fluffy duvets so we were very snug. We loved the little touches - the cocoa and shortbread, the games (although maybe add a couple of classics?), the books, fairy lights, fluffy robes and especially the welcome hamper! The best bit was the hot tub: although it took ages to get it hot - so preheating would definitely have been helpful - it was divine once it was hot! The only other thing I would recommend would be complimentary ear plugs and eye masks in the welcome pack because a big tent is noisy in a high wind and very light in the morning. Other than that, it's really well equipped (especially the kitchen!) and the hosts were so helpful and responsive. so all in all it was pretty perfect!

A simply incredible place.

I would like to start the review by saying, we tried to stay on for extra nights because we didn’t want to leave. The setup is beautiful. We never saw another soul apart from the hosts who were friendly, attentive and not in your face. Perfect! The view from the tent and the hot tub is breathtaking, and the tent was pristine, comfortable and spacious. The hot tub is also amazing, and the offer to pre-heat it for us, was gratefully received. With regard to everything else, it was excellent, but could be even better with a few tweaks. The (private) compost loo/shower was clean, and worked well. The kitchen was well equipped (shout out to the excellent cool box which still had ice in it 3 days after we bought ice cubes to cool our drinks.) The bed is comfortable, and the fresh flowers, welcome pack and fluffy bath robes a really nice touch. The setup would benefit from a sink of some sort. Washing up / brushing teeth in a bucket is not perfect, and the tap could be moved to miss the decking! but that was realistically the only gripe in an otherwise lovely trip. We will be back, and we have recommended it to many others.
