These super-sized, double-decker yurts on a charming East Sussex farm take glamping to another level

There are yurts and then there are Graywood Canvas Cottages. Set between the East Sussex High Weald and the South Downs National Park, this brand new glamping site near the charming village of East Hoathly takes yurt camping to another level – quite literally.

So taken with the mammoth luxury yurts she stayed in during an impromptu glamping excursion in Yosemite National Park over a decade over, hostess Stephanie envisioned these super-sized creations on her idyllic farm one day. And now, 15 years later, she’s sharing her slice of glamping West Coast style on the South Coast of England.

Proving the old adage true that our cousins over the pond really do make everything bigger, the three titular canvas cottages are spread over two floors –arguably the only mezzanine model yurts of their kind available to UK glampers. To call them yurts almost feels like a disservice, but these double-decker canvas cottages – crafted and imported direct from Seattle – boast full-size french doors and huge picture windows offering widescreen views that allow the light to pour in. The intricate lattice walls, rafters and a staircase made of douglas fir demonstrates the quality of the craftsmanship, while the stargazing crown means guests can enjoy a celestial show, safe in the snugness of their cosy abode.

With both a ground-floor bedroom with super-king Hypnos bed and a galleried first-floor bedroom with three single Hypnos mattresses (or a double and a single), the yurts can comfortably accommodate up to five guests. There is a separate sitting room with comfy custom-made sofas, a dining table and chairs for six, and everything else you could possibly need to make you feel right at home – electric heaters and a flame-effect fire, a television and DVD player and books and board games for rainy days.

An integrated kitchenette includes a microwave, oven and hob, a toaster and a kettle and there’s even appliances like a washer/drier, fridge/freezer and dishwasher should you need them. Towels, duvets, and all bed linens is provided along with cutlery and crockery. Facilities-wise, there’s a proper bathroom with flushing toilet, hot water shower, and underfloor heating, while thoughtful touches like complimentary toiletries add to the hassle-free nature of a stay here. And when the sun’s read the script, guests should make full use of the outside furniture beside the firepit and barbecue – oh, and did we mention each yurt boasts its own private hot tub too?

Despite the obvious luxuries onsite and the scenic setting, the wonder of Sussex and the south coast await. East Hoathly is a charming country village with a couple of cracking little pubs and post-pint walks to enjoy, while historic Rye, boho Brighton and the sprawling South Downs are all within easy reach.

Both yurts have a bedroom with a super-king-sized bed downstairs and a mezzanine bedroom upstairs accommodating up to 3 people. Travel cots on request. Towels and bed-linen provided. Each yurt kitchen includes toaster, kettle, oven, hob, microwave, washer/dryer, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, plus all pots, crockery and cutlery. Yurt living spaces include a dining table that seats up to 6, electric heaters and flame-effect fire, a TV with DVD player and selection of DVDs, games and books for rainy days – and a hot tub at each yurt for sunny ones! Proper bathrooms with underfloor heating, shower and flushing loo in each yurt. Firepit and BBQ outside.

Suitable For

Glampers – yes. Dogs – no.

East Hoathly village is 3km away and has a shop and post office, a hairdressers, a café and a pair of decent pubs. There is a park with a children's playground and the village cricket team can be found playing there on a Sunday afternoon. Further afield, Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum (01825 840573) is a multi-faceted family attraction, just 10 minutes away by car, while Sheffield Park, north of Uckfield, is a magnificent National Trust garden, from where steam trains run to East Grinstead on the Bluebell Railway (01825 720800). If it's raining, you might consider a trip to the Jacobean mansion of Rudyard Kipling, Bateman's, in nearby Burwash.

Food & Drink

The family's own Offham Farm Shop (01273 478265) does great meat for BBQs. The local pub is The KIng's Head (01825 840238) in East Hoathly. This historic CAMRA-approved watering hole (dating back to 1648) boasts a fine selection of ales (courtesy of the brewery next door) and a decent menu of pub grub favourites. The Star Inn at Waldron (01435 812495) is another antiquated gem of a pub with a beautiful beer garden to boot. Not to be confused, The Star Inn (01435 863570) in Old Heathfield is well worth a visit too, as is The Black Duck (01435 830636) in Warbelton.  The Offham Farm Shop (01273 478265) does great meat for BBQs.

Graywood Farm is a small, family run, working farm. Over the last decade we have farmed Charolais cattle and Southdown sheep. Currently we have sheep grazing across the land. As with many farms now, we also have diversified with several small businesses being based onsite.

It is highly likely that there will be sheep in field a short way from the yurts and you may be able to see them from your window.

Heavenly hideaway

Home from the most wonderful weekend staying in Ash Yurt - this is my kind of glamping! Everything had been thought of with lovely little touches, welcome pack was just perfect along with milk and fresh orange in the fridge. We made good use of the hot tub which was the icing on the cake, also a good range of games & dvds to watch so we enjoyed family film night too. Just didn’t quite have enough time to enjoy the area as much as we’d like but would be keen to stay again and explore this beautiful area more.

Response from Graywood Canvas Cottages

Thank you!  We are so pleased you enjoyed your time in Ash Yurt and we would be delighted to welcome you back.

Secluded and Relaxing

I've just returned from a long weekend at Graywood Canvas Cottages with a couple of friends. As someone who goes camping regularly it was a nice change from having to set up my own tent. The guys here have a really good set up with comfortable yurts that make the trip feel like a home away from home including everything you could need for an enjoyable weekend away (fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with a great shower, TV and seating area, comfortable beds, linen and towels provided etc). Each yurt has its own area and is surrounded by a high hedge to give you ultimate privacy. It was a relaxing weekend in incredibly beautiful countryside. The hot tub was a great addition and we made full use of it each day. I found it nice that there was no Wi-Fi as it was great to just shut off and enjoy being away from the rat-race of London however, I'm not sure that this would suit everyone but don't let that deter you, it is good to put your phone down and enjoy the quiet surroundings of this lovely place. If there was anything I would change, it would be the check in and check out times, 4pm for check in when you have booked a whole day annual leave to get away and get settled in for the weekend was just a bit late for us, I'd much rather check in around midday then go explore at leisure than have to fill the day and check in late afternoon, and the 9:30am check out was slightly too early, 10:30 - 11am would be perfect. I do understand that these times allow for the hot tub water to be changed and it wouldn't put me off from visiting again, it is just a suggestion that these times don't suit everyone. Overall I would highly recommend this destination and hope I can visit again some time.

Now this is Glamping

We had the pleasure of staying in Graywood canvas cottages Ash Yurt and we were blown away with the accommodation. This is true Glamping in style from the comfortable beds to the en-suite bathrooom and the private hot tub outside your secluded home. On arrival the owners had left us all the essentials in the fully fitted kitchen, from milk and orange juice in the full-size fridge-freezer to a selection of Cereals and crumpets. Bathroom essentials including towels and toilet roll were already provided helping us Pack lighter. One of the really helpful things the owners provide is a link To their own app which you can download prior to your stay and it provides really helpful information on local restaurants, things to do and places to visit. We had a great 4 days and are already looking at dates for a return visit next year.

Response from Graywood Canvas Cottages

Thank you Gary - great to hear you enjoyed your stay.  Look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

Ideal for a relaxing cycling break

The yurts were comfy fully equipped with everything you need. Loved the welcome goodies that allowed us glide into holiday mode without any hassle. Even a couple of loo rolls and a roll of kitchen towel, dishwasher tablets etc were provided. The hot tub was divine... worked perfect and the temperature was just right. The toilet was clean and had everything we needed. We did the Cuckoo trail nearby on cycle. The autumn colours in the forest was magnificent! Felt a bit sad that some parts of the trail are getting encroached by new developments. Hope locals and authorities will ensure that this lovely walking/cycling path will be preserved for the future..!

Peaceful, quiet, just perfect.

In the middle of no where, which is what we were after. Having no wi fi made it even better. Fully equipped, massive bed, proper kitchen and shower room. The hamper of goodies plus milk and juice was just perfect and handy. We used the hot tub every night. The yurt was lovely and warm, even for October. Although in middle of nowhere, we were close enough to places like Eastbourne and Hastings. Just a perfect relaxing week away. Hopefully we’ll go back again, even though we only lived about 90 minutes away. Some books and dvds were supplied but take some more with you as tv signal not great. Gave us a chance to watch a few films. Just loved it.

Glamping at its best

Just stayed 4 nights at Graywood well this was glamping at its best. Perfect location very quiet only 3 yurts surrounded by fields and sheep close by. Enough space for the boys to run about and we were celebrating my sons 12th birthday. Even better to enjoy the British heatwave for the week especially having a hot tub to enjoy in the sun. All facilities inside yurt amazing. Would recommend to friend/ family and will certainly visit again. Thank you Stephanie and Richard

Fantastic Stay

I booked 2 yurts for our family over Easter weekend and were not disappointed. We had the best time. We felt like we were overseas. The farm was tranquil and idyllic. The yurts were so well appointed it felt like a hotel in a field. The generosity of hosts Stephanie and Richard to provide a hamper, toiletries and even Easter surprises just made the stay even more special. I can not recommend it highly enough. We will be rebooking!
