The luxury option to one of the Sussex High Weald's loveliest rural retreats

Walkers have their Sensations; Tesco's have their Finest range; even Megabus offer a 'gold' service for those who like to do their M1 gridlocks in the utmost comfort. And now, the team behind the delightful Dogwood Cottage Camping (aka Phil and Katy) bring us their luxury exclusive hire offering, the Dogwood Glamping yurt. That's not to call the original campsite next door the 'value' option (although it certainly is an affordable choice for a relaxing rural break in the heart of the High Weald), but rather this more high-end accommodation is squared at those more accustomed to a night on mattresses of the strictly non-inflatable kind. So if you're more Twinings than Tetley's, this glampsite might just be your cup of tea.

It's hard to argue with what this latest venture boasts. The Dogwood yurt is a mammoth 20ft diameter felt-lined Ornate Turkmen built from Ash trees sourced from the Glyndebourne Forest. Inside, it's a veritable riad of colourful scatter cushions and rugs that will happily accommodate a family of four, two on deluxe handmade Taurus beds (with firm orthopaedic mattresses) and two have to bring their own camping beds and bed linen. All the basics are included, plus a few welcome extras like a radiator, kettle, toaster, mini fridge, Egyptian cotton bed linen (freshly laundered and ironed) and the Morso wood-burning stove really sets it off. Outside, the spacious pristine decking area comes complete with a picnic table, parasol and firepit for enjoying a lazy al fresco evening meal.

New for 2015, the ever-resourceful Phil and Katy have masterfully crafted a brand-new camping cabin. From its secluded pondside spot amidst ash and willow trees, the Dogwood Cabin is a cosy abode for any glamping couple. This full-insulated and heated lodge has all the mod cons – futon double bed, silent mini-fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and a compost loo. For all the creature comforts, campers can still immerse themselves in the sights and smells of The Great Outdoors by flinging open the French windows or lazily reclining on the sun-trapped veranda.

Location-wise, this little site ticks all boxes. All the facilities of the adjacent low-key campsite are available to use, while the quaint village of Brede lies at the heart of the Sussex High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's vast undulating grasslands are ripe for long country walks, before collapsing in a comfy sofa at one of the region's innumerable country pubs for a pint of the local ale. Rye's ancient cobbled streets beckon you to visit its timbered houses and picturesque harbour, while the pivotal towns of Battle and Hastings (1066 and all that) are also nearby.

Though a wealth of attractions await in all directions, you'll want to make sure you get back to camp for a spot of stargazing. Dogwood lies under some of the UK's clearest night skies – a real boon for a campsite this close to the capital. With Brede free of streetlights, light pollution is non-existent. As the video below of the recent Geminid meteor shower shows, Dogwood's glampers are in for a treat. So stoke up the firepit and toast the marshmallows, or if it's just the two of you, recline on your deluxe bed and admire the twinkling stellar tapestry through the roof wheel in your cosy canvas retreat.

Head south to the numerous beaches that are within driving distance, Camber Sands being perhaps the most well known, or stop at one of the coastal towns. Hastings is an excellent place, not only for its historic old town and famous connections with the invasion of 1066, but also for the spattering of fantastic seafood that can be found. Food & Drink

There is a small onsite shop selling home-grown organic seasonal veg, free-range eggs and other essentials. The Red Lion (01424 882188) pub is just 10 minute stroll across the fields and serves great local seasonal British cuisine, while The Rainbow Trout (01424 882031) is a 15 minute walk towards Broad Oak and provides a great selection of meals as well as a sizeable beer garden. Both are dog friendly. Brede Farmer's Market (01424 813928) runs every Friday 10am-12 noon in the village hall. It offers a fantastic selection of local produce and a warm welcome is guaranteeed... as are a few delectable tasters as you wander round! There's also a convenience store within walking distance and a large Sainsbury's 10 minutes drive away. For those fans of the grape, the family-run Carr Taylor Vineyard (01424 752501) offers tasting tours from £10.

Brilliant campsite

Amazing campsite, super friendly and helpful owners, beautiful site, really peaceful. The kids had the best time and really loved the animals, also, amazing location for any number of amazing things and places to do. We will definitely be back

Bliss, relaxing, fun, surrounded by nature in a bell tent

We can’t recommend this enough. The bell tent had everything we were looking for. We escaped the city for a little treat and had such a blissful time. Phil was the perfect host generously leaving us a few treats and even introduced us to his ducks, birds, fabulous ponie Deano and goats Pumpkin & Olive on the mast day. We had a lovely campfire and brought our portable pizza oven so enjoyed delicious pizza with some whiskey old fashioneds by the fire. We visited a really cool brewery called The Three Legs snd even got to hold a prize winning marrow. What a great time altogether. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others. Thanks for everything Phil.

Weekend Yurt holiday

We stayed in the Yurt at Dogwood Glamping in Sept 2021 and what a fantastic weekend we have had! It was a birthday surprise for my husband and our two children (8 & 2) and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay, even myself who is definitely not the biggest fan of camping. The site itself was easy to find and Phil sent out a great welcome pack filled with all the details we needed for getting there and checking in, in a contact free way. The yurt is fantastic! It's a great size, more than enough room for us all and there was already a travel cot in there for us to use. The fridge and kettle were a great addition along with the tea and coffee provided. Although we were blessed with fine weather, it was good to know the woodburner was there in case the nights turned cold. We enjoyed using the firepit outside both nights to toast marshmallows and even though we had forgotten our matches/lighter there was a shop only a 15min walk away where we could gain supplies. The site has great facilities which were a very short walk away, always clean and ready to be used. The yurt also had a small toilet tent located next to it which was handy. There was also a small basket of goodies that you could purchase for your stay such as vegan marshmallows and local produce which was such a lovely touch too. We loved the decking area outside the yurt which was perfect for an outdoor breakfast in the sunshine, which was made even more exciting when the chickens, ducks etc came to visit. The children loved walking around and spotting the animals on our walks to the facilities. The area is lovely, with lots of beautiful places to visit in the Sussex countryside. Whilst staying in the yurt we visited Bodium castle, Rye and Camber Sands beach, all short drives away. Thank you Dogwood Glamping for a lovely weekend, you have helped to convert a (reluctant) camper to try some more glamping in the future.

Nice cabin not so private

The bed was very uncomfortable, thin foot on can feel wooden slats underneath. Hammock was black moody. was not very clean Accomadation needed good hoover. . Black mold on drinking water bottles lid inside. Composting loo absolutely stank. Could small it cooking our food on fire. The owner lingered about the cabin, his property overlooks it. Even tho unable to check in before 4 pm you have to leave by 10am and the owner comes round to check ur packing to leave . Children come in to your private area playing. Animal dropping on floor from goats and chickens were you eat and cook food, they in or anything you leave outside of cabin. Dog barking woke us up at 7 am. Exspensive for what you get .

Response from Dogwood Glamping

We are very confused. Kay Williams stayed in our Cabin for one night (01/08) this summer, and then, two days after leaving, presumably having had a good stay, she booked again and stayed a second time (17/08), just two weeks later in the same Cabin, and the same bed. If she really found the bed uncomfortable, the Cabin overlooked (which it isn’t!), or the whole experience was as expensive and as unpleasant as she suggests why on Earth did she book to stay again? It doesn’t make sense.

Cosy and friendly

We stayed in the cabin and loved our time there - the campsite is cosy, friendly and welcoming. Thank you!

A campsite with character

I've stayed at hundreds of campsites but none are quite like Dogwood... It's small and quiet, attracts interesting people and has a small resident population of free-to-roam chickens and ducks that kept us amused throughout. Great facilities, mellow vibe and 15 mins to Winchelsea Beach. Will be back.

Great debut to Glamping

Booked this so the kids could enjoy days on the beach and it didn’t disappoint as it’s such a short drive. We stayed in the yurt, which had everything needed for a fun adventure for my boys. The facilities are excellent and the host is really friendly and accommodating. We had a really comfortable night and we thoroughly enjoyed our family stay, with the boys really appreciating being in the outdoors with the chickens, goats, rabbits and ducks roaming freely. We can’t wait to go back!

Idyllic woodland stay

Absolutely loved the animals roaming free, particularly the Shetland pony. Just added another magical dimension to the experience! The tent was spacious and comfortable, and the site is pleasantly secluded in its own corner of the site. could not reccomend enough! Thank you Phil! ( Also really enjoyed the red lion pub down the road, authentic and very friendly! )

A cosy, country retreat.

Just come home from a wonderful weekend at Dogwood Glamping. We stayed in the yurt which was gloriously authentic and cosy. It had a private garden area with benches and even our own picnic table, it was a lovely setting in which to gaze at the night time sky by the light of a campfire. The facilities were pristine and our beds were very clean and comfortable. I adored making friends with Pumpkin and Olive, the friendly goats who roam freely around the campsite along with the chickens. Phil was a lovely, welcoming host who was happy to help with any enquiries. I can't wait to go back!

Wonderful stay

Dogwood was absolutely wonderful. We stayed in the Yurt. It was unique, quiet and beautifully and thoughtfully decked out. All the joy of camping but with beds that were really clean and comfortable. Set in what was like a small forest, it had goats, chickens and grouse roaming during the day and by night starry skies and the crackle of camp fires. The showers and toilets block were immaculate. If you want time away from the fast hubbub of everyday life, this was perfect. Phil was always at hand to help if you needed it and advice on where to go if you wanted it. Would definitely go again.

Great location, could do with a little more cleaning

The location is great with the pub and a bakery within walking distance. We did the observatory and castle Saturday then went to Hastings on the Sunday of our stay. The bed sheets were stained, and the blankets / rugs were grubby. The water bottle left out for us, which we drunk from, had green algae in the bottom so doubt it’s been cleaned recently. The communal toilets /showers were clean though. It was a nice stay, the wood burner and fire were great fun plus all the chickens/goat/pony.

So close to nature

The cabin was just the right size and slightly secluded from the rest of the campsite behind the pond. We loved the animals that visited us every now and again and that were roaming around the campsite. I'm an early bird so while my partner was still snoozing I enjoyed the sounds of the birds in the provided hammock with view of the pond. A fire bowl and bbq grill were provided, too but we haven't used it in the end. Toilets and showers were cleaner than in any of the hotels I've stayed in as well as the cabin itself. Everything is very nicely kept without impacting on nature. What I didn't realise when I booked it which I think is worth mentioning (and also thanking Katy and Phil for being so thoughtful) is that the whole place is very sustainable! They have a good recycling system, eco friendly products, eggs from their hens, all the signage etc is reused and repurposed wood and some of the building materials are reused aswell. I appreciated this very much and wanted to let them know that people do care and notice ;)

Wonderful place

We stayed in the caravan and had the best weekend. Phil and his family are so welcoming and friendly. Great communication and information pack prior to arrival. So clean. Beautiful sites for all the different camping and glamping options. Spaced out enough for privacy. My son loved looking at the animals and just generally toddling around the site. Loo block spacious and clean. Short walk to the most perfect pub. I really can’t recommend this place enough and will certainly be back. Thank you! Oh and bed in the caravan really warm and comfy.

Fantastic break in a charming location

We just returned from staying in the cabin for a night and it was an amazing experience! Phil is a brilliant host, the showers were hot and the toilets were clean...despite the many animals on-site we were not woken up too early! Had a restful, gorgeous time escaping the city and would thoroughly recommend to anyone!! I can't wait to return!

Truly restful

I organised a night in the yurt for a much needed night off baby duties for my son and daughter-in-law. Amazing location, yurt warm and comfortable, goats and chickens ambling around, friendly hosts and beautiful campsite and local area. Wished I'd booked it for myself!

A lovely escape !

We stayed Dogwood Glamping's Log Cabin this October (2020) and absolutely loved the ambience, tranquility and service of the campsite. A truely lovely escape, the site is walkable distance to quaint old pubs and from there you can drive to countless historical sights, namely Rye, Battle and Hastings. Coming from London it was the perfect city escape, and cannot reccomend enough! Thanks Dogwood for a lovely holiday.

Beautiful yurt trumped terrible weather!

We absolutely loved our stay in the yurt: beautiful, spacious and wonderfully warm in spite of torrential rain! I woke on our last night to see the moon above me - would be totally magical on clearer nights than we had! Our girls were delighted with the tiny goats and the chickens who came visiting. Facilities are simple but freshly done and good - regularly cleaned and good COVID measures. It poured all weekend and we still absolutely loved it!

A perfect secluded idyll

We had a lovely 2 nights staying at Dogwood in the Bell Tent. The tent is located in a beautiful little clearing just off of the main camp site, so it feels really secluded and peaceful, but still close enough to all the amenities/showers/water you need on site. Everything in the tent/campsite facilities was really clean and orderly -- and cleaning of all the toilets/showers seemed to be happening very regularly which was great to see in these times! We had everything we needed for a beautiful peaceful trip -- a great firebowl, fresh eggs in the morning and comfortable little camp beds inside the tent. We can't reccomend Dogwood enough !

Dogwood glamping was awesome, my friend and I had two nights in a bell tent and we had the best time ever. Very peaceful. We will definitely be returning. 👍👍👍 To this glamping.

relaxing break!

we stayed at dogwood in the yurt for 2 nights - what a great, peaceful place to be to totally relax and chill!! we had a fab couple of days. the toilets/showers were so clean, and having the chickens, ducks and goats wondering freely and visiting us at the yurt was lovely to see! we totally chilled out! we will definitely be back!! thanks for a great experience

Great August break

Had a great four night stay in the bell tent, even in windy weather. The most important thing for us was somewhere private and suitable during these Covid-19 times. The washing, shower and toilet facilities were clean and washed regularly. We had a lovely peaceful stay, and loved exploring the nearby woods, Rye and Hastings. We’ve already discussed planning our stay next year.

Amazing stay in the Yurt!

Our overall stay with Dogwood Glamping was absolutely brilliant. We booked the Yurt very last minute (literally the day before) as we'd been let down on another site we were meant to be going to and we didn't want to let our children down. Phil and Katy were brilliant with communication from the offset which was a great relief so we instantly knew we were in good hands. The Yurt is exactly as the pictures look on their site- a really amazing place. Very cozy, amazing interior and very clean. The wood stove was great! The twin handmade beds were amazing- very comfy with fresh, crisp linen. The Yurt has it's own personal little courtyard with decking, a firepit, pic nick bench seating (with sun umbrella) and two bench seats for the firepit. The kids (8 and 10) loved the whole adventure. The whole site is very family friendly with chickens and goats running around (which the kids loved) and lovely and peaceful at night. The shower and toilet facilities were just spotless and very modern and literally 20 seconds walk from our site. Dogwood clean the block constantly and there is hand sanitizer freely available. We really, really enjoyed our stay and will be making this a regular stay. Would absolutely recommend to anyone wanting a charming and friendly place to camp or glamp!

Basic, disappointing and unloved.

Arrived here to celebrate my wife’s 30th birthday with a stay in the woodland bell tent. Upon arriving the general area of the tent was untidy and unloved, this theme was continued when entering the tent itself. We were asked to bring our own bedding but didn’t realise we should of brought our own bed also. The “beds” provided were sun lounger sponge mattresses, - and this is not an over exaggeration - covered in bedsheets, not raised, with no comfort whatsoever. To put it bluntly we may as well have slept on the ground, there was no difference. The mugs had tea dried in the bottom of them from the previous occupants. Certainly not great in the times in which we currently live. Mitigating factors being that the weather wasn’t great, and the owner was very nice, but having spent £80 I felt extremely underwhelmed. We genuinely considered driving home if it wasn’t for the long journey coupled with the late 4pm check-in. I feel this is a very fair review that will hopefully help other customers from making a mistake or give the owners the motivation to make things better.

Honestly fab

We had a fantastic weekend staying in the bell tent! It’s such a nice laid back quiet campsite. The bell tent is in its own private forest glade and you feel like you are in the middle of the woods! The tent is large and spacious and we slept well. The showers are clean hot and comfortable. Please don’t go expecting instagram luxury, that’s not what this is, go expecting goats, open fires, woodsmoke and amazing views of the stars! Oh and bats at dusk! Amazing! It’s location is fantastic and the newly renovated Broad Oak pub up the road does delicious food. I’d recommend you take some mosquito spray and some good torches.

Favourite site

The Dogwood website information told us that this was the ideal place for us, the words environment & sustainability matched what we search for and rarely find in site searches... not for us 'Stepford' manicured fields, stripped of their natural habitat, without care for neither plants nor animals... Oft the words really don't match the reality however Dogwood in the real far exceeds the words... Hurrah!!! Dogwood Cottage is a rural idyll, a place which feels right, kind and sensitive to its surroundings, with an abundance of wildlife seeming almost undisturbed by human interlopers. We were warmly welcomed by Katy who was accompanied by the resident twin goats, who rested by our Bongo Freda whilst we chatted, they proved to be so comical as did the hen who visited us daily to share our freshly picked Blackberries and seeds for brek, not forgetting the 'Ducks in a Row' who stopped by and then waddled off to visit the fire bucket for the occasional sip.. Don't wish to ramble further just to say this is a fab site and we will return again and again... Thank you lots Katy and Phil for making our stay absolutely lovely.

Calm, secluded, cosy cabin

Had a lovely two nights in the cabin, a great way to escape london for a few days. The cabin is gorgeous - the bed is comfy and warm, the little mini-fridge and kettle were great, and there were two wine glasses so we could sit round the fire pit at night with some wine and listen to the chickens and ducks making a fuss nearby. And the goats are very sweet! The shared shower isn't luxurious (this is still a campsite, after all) but it was hot and perfectly clean, and our private little compost loo was very convenient. All the other campers were friendly, lent us matches to light our fire. The area is probably better enjoyed if you have a car - it wasn't as easy as we thought to find a beautiful walk nearby, though we did make it to High Brede Wood after fighting through some overgrown public footpaths. Also the Red Lion Pub (great food) and the Three Legs Brewery (great beer) are an easy walk and super nice. Would definitely stay here again!

Super fun yurt weekend - with added goats!

We stayed for a weekend in the yurt recently with our 18 month old, who absolutely loved the entire experience from start to finish. Phil was so helpful, nothing was too much trouble, and we had a very cosy couple of nights cuddled up under the stars. Loved the fire pit and the big picnic table and umbrella, and the addition of a rocking horse and other little wooden toys went down really well too. Highly recommend booking at The Red Lion, as they only have one high chair and get very busy, but the food was brilliant and the staff were wonderfully accommodating of our child flinging food everywhere. Amazing location, brilliant accommodation and lovely lovely hosts.

Everything was just perfect!

What a lovely, relaxing, amazing place, just perfect! The yurt was just as it was meant to be, rustic and quirky, just loved the decor. Even the rain didn't spoil our stay it just made us make more use of the yurt. With a pit stop at the fab local microbrewery Three Legs for a tipple and a take out. We then enjoyed a game of cards a few nibbles and the log burner keeping us toasty. Luckily we got to enjoy a sunny breakfast outside the next day with chickens clucking around us, and visited the lovely goats, just wish we could of stayed longer. Just munching one of your tasty organic tomatos. Thanks to the owners for a warm greeting and for a perfect stay ☺

The owners were very friendly and accommadating.

Although we had a very pleasant stay. We were slightly disappointed with the campsite and facilities. The Yurt is advertised as sleeps four, but there are only physically two beds. We took bedding as instructed for our kids, but didn't realise we actually needed to take camp beds and bed rolls. Bed rolls were provided by the owners but the kids were a little disgruntled at sleeping on the floor. The yurt's decor is a little tired and worn, more could be made of the outside space, again looks a bit worn. The toilet facilities are basic with only one shower for the whole site and two toilets.

The whole experience from start to finish.

I booked this as a birthday gift & what a treat, pure delight. Very private, quiet & super friendly. I would definitely recommend. We spent the day in Rye, lovely eateries & the weather was perfect. We ate using the fire pit & had marshmallows too. Fab adventure. Thanks Phil

Dogwood Campsite Yurt

We were lucky enough to stay two nights in the yurt. It was beautiful, comfy, warm and cosy. Set in beautiful location and separate to the camping area, has it's own private garden. Phil the owner is a lovely man, very helpful. Facilities were all well kept and clean. The first night we laid in bed listening to Owls who must have been purched very close to us. The second night we listened to high winds, (no movement from the yurt :-) ) Lovely to see the full moon through the clear roof. Loved the goats, chickens, ducks and dogs all of which were an unexpected bonus. Highly recommend this place, would love to go back again.

We stayed in the yurt and it was a truly unforgettable few days for our family. You are part of the camping experience as far as the children are concerned - and the sociability they enjoy - but have a secluded patch of your own to enjoy the peace of the birdsong (no radios as a rule). The yurt is large and full of character, reflecting the ethos of the owners. The roof can open to the sky when the weather is fine, or there is a heater and even a wood-burning stove inside. Two proper beds and indulgent bed linen mean the lines between camping and glamping are blurred, but this is still a very real outdoor experience, minus the arguments putting the tent up. The chickens and ducks are rather beautiful. Lots to do in the local area too.

Amazing loved every minute of it - May 2017

Me and my hubby and our 2 little girls stayed in the Yurt for 2 nights in May - we throughly enjoyed it - the Yurt is beautifully decorated inside very cosy and warm. We used the outside firepitt too cook both breakie and dinner on which the kids loved, as did my husband. Its very private and secluded the Yurt has its own decking outside and picnic table with massive brolley. There are 2 pubs within walking distance which we walked to with our little girls - they were both nice - but particulary recommend the Rainbow Trout - lovely food and outdoor play area for kids. There are rabbits, ducks, chickens all walking around the site freely which was lovely to see and on the 2nd morning we purchased freshly baked crossiants from Kathy/Phil(owners) which were lovely, We went and visited Camber Sands and Hasting during our stay - def recommend to anyone.

Beautiful place

I booked the yurt for my partners birthday and we were not disappointed. The yurt was cosy, clean and was very comfortable. We particularly liked the log burner, the roof where you can look up at the stars and the relaxed feel. The surrounding area was peaceful and so beautiful. The breakfast was a lovely touch and we felt the owners would do anything for us. Wonderful people and beautiful place. We will definately recommend to others. Thank you so much Katie and Philip x

Wonderful spot...

Just got back from a lovely weekend with my husband and our baby in the cabin at Dogswood. What an absolutely beautiful place, especially in the early morning sunshine. Our little girl loved meeting the chickens, playing in the mud and trying to eat catkins. The cabin is tucked away in a secret corner, looking out onto a woodland pond enclosed with willows and bamboo. It's simple, warm and cosy with a fantastically comfy bed and a tiny meditation deck outside. Once our baby was in bed we retreated outside to sit by the fire and watch the stars with a hot cup of tea. Magic! Feeling reinvigorated and totally blissed out after our stay. Thanks so much Phil and Katy, we'll definitely be back!

Lovely yurt

This really was a beautiful yurt. We've stayed in a few now but this was definitely the best we've come across and was excellent value for money. Its great that the owners haven't cut corners on quality - we loved the beautiful Tibetan carpets and top notch Egyptian cotton bed linen.  And even though it was March the wood stove inside kept us as warm as toast. The yurt is surrounded by decking and has its own fenced off private area with a firebowl which was great for sitting out and watching the stars which really were impressive. It was also good to be out in nature - but not too far from a pub! We loved the surrounding area and all in all have had the perfect midweek break we were looking for.

Have stayed in Dogwood Yurt a number of times and always want to return - lovely secluded site with private deck - beautiful cosy yurt with wood burning stove - friendly helpful owners - plenty of woodland walks in surrounding areas - a great place to relax, listen to the birds and watch the stars -

Great place, went over easter so was quite busy but still felt private. Had all the facilities we needed and what we forgot to take was sold at the shop on site.

Would definitely go again.
