The luxury option to one of the Sussex High Weald's loveliest rural retreats

Walkers have their Sensations; Tesco's have their Finest range; even Megabus offer a 'gold' service for those who like to do their M1 gridlocks in the utmost comfort. And now, the team behind the delightful Dogwood Cottage Camping (aka Phil and Katy) bring us their luxury exclusive hire offering, the Dogwood Glamping yurt. That's not to call the original campsite next door the 'value' option (although it certainly is an affordable choice for a relaxing rural break in the heart of the High Weald), but rather this more high-end accommodation is squared at those more accustomed to a night on mattresses of the strictly non-inflatable kind. So if you're more Twinings than Tetley's, this glampsite might just be your cup of tea.

It's hard to argue with what this latest venture boasts. The Dogwood yurt is a mammoth 20ft diameter felt-lined Ornate Turkmen built from Ash trees sourced from the Glyndebourne Forest. Inside, it's a veritable riad of colourful scatter cushions and rugs that will happily accommodate a family of four, two on deluxe handmade Taurus beds (with firm orthopaedic mattresses) and two have to bring their own camping beds and bed linen. All the basics are included, plus a few welcome extras like a radiator, kettle, toaster, mini fridge, Egyptian cotton bed linen (freshly laundered and ironed) and the Morso wood-burning stove really sets it off. Outside, the spacious pristine decking area comes complete with a picnic table, parasol and firepit for enjoying a lazy al fresco evening meal.

New for 2015, the ever-resourceful Phil and Katy have masterfully crafted a brand-new camping cabin. From its secluded pondside spot amidst ash and willow trees, the Dogwood Cabin is a cosy abode for any glamping couple. This full-insulated and heated lodge has all the mod cons – futon double bed, silent mini-fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and a compost loo. For all the creature comforts, campers can still immerse themselves in the sights and smells of The Great Outdoors by flinging open the French windows or lazily reclining on the sun-trapped veranda.

Location-wise, this little site ticks all boxes. All the facilities of the adjacent low-key campsite are available to use, while the quaint village of Brede lies at the heart of the Sussex High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's vast undulating grasslands are ripe for long country walks, before collapsing in a comfy sofa at one of the region's innumerable country pubs for a pint of the local ale. Rye's ancient cobbled streets beckon you to visit its timbered houses and picturesque harbour, while the pivotal towns of Battle and Hastings (1066 and all that) are also nearby.

Though a wealth of attractions await in all directions, you'll want to make sure you get back to camp for a spot of stargazing. Dogwood lies under some of the UK's clearest night skies – a real boon for a campsite this close to the capital. With Brede free of streetlights, light pollution is non-existent. As the video below of the recent Geminid meteor shower shows, Dogwood's glampers are in for a treat. So stoke up the firepit and toast the marshmallows, or if it's just the two of you, recline on your deluxe bed and admire the twinkling stellar tapestry through the roof wheel in your cosy canvas retreat.

Head south to the numerous beaches that are within driving distance, Camber Sands being perhaps the most well known, or stop at one of the coastal towns. Both are dog friendly. Brede Farmer's Market (01424 813928) runs every Friday 10am-12 noon in the village hall. It offers a fantastic selection of local produce and a warm welcome is guaranteeed... as are a few delectable tasters as you wander round! There's also a convenience store within walking distance and a large Sainsbury's 10 minutes drive away. For those fans of the grape, the family-run Carr Taylor Vineyard (01424 752501) offers tasting tours from £10.

Favourite site

The Dogwood website information told us that this was the ideal place for us, the words environment & sustainability matched what we search for and rarely find in site searches... not for us 'Stepford' manicured fields, stripped of their natural habitat, without care for neither plants nor animals... Oft the words really don't match the reality however Dogwood in the real far exceeds the words... Hurrah!!! Dogwood Cottage is a rural idyll, a place which feels right, kind and sensitive to its surroundings, with an abundance of wildlife seeming almost undisturbed by human interlopers. We were warmly welcomed by Katy who was accompanied by the resident twin goats, who rested by our Bongo Freda whilst we chatted, they proved to be so comical as did the hen who visited us daily to share our freshly picked Blackberries and seeds for brek, not forgetting the 'Ducks in a Row' who stopped by and then waddled off to visit the fire bucket for the occasional sip.. Don't wish to ramble further just to say this is a fab site and we will return again and again... Thank you lots Katy and Phil for making our stay absolutely lovely.

Calm, secluded, cosy cabin

Had a lovely two nights in the cabin, a great way to escape london for a few days. The cabin is gorgeous - the bed is comfy and warm, the little mini-fridge and kettle were great, and there were two wine glasses so we could sit round the fire pit at night with some wine and listen to the chickens and ducks making a fuss nearby. And the goats are very sweet! The shared shower isn't luxurious (this is still a campsite, after all) but it was hot and perfectly clean, and our private little compost loo was very convenient. All the other campers were friendly, lent us matches to light our fire. The area is probably better enjoyed if you have a car - it wasn't as easy as we thought to find a beautiful walk nearby, though we did make it to High Brede Wood after fighting through some overgrown public footpaths. Also the Red Lion Pub (great food) and the Three Legs Brewery (great beer) are an easy walk and super nice. Would definitely stay here again!

Super fun yurt weekend - with added goats!

We stayed for a weekend in the yurt recently with our 18 month old, who absolutely loved the entire experience from start to finish. Phil was so helpful, nothing was too much trouble, and we had a very cosy couple of nights cuddled up under the stars. Loved the fire pit and the big picnic table and umbrella, and the addition of a rocking horse and other little wooden toys went down really well too. Highly recommend booking at The Red Lion, as they only have one high chair and get very busy, but the food was brilliant and the staff were wonderfully accommodating of our child flinging food everywhere. Amazing location, brilliant accommodation and lovely lovely hosts.

Everything was just perfect!

What a lovely, relaxing, amazing place, just perfect! The yurt was just as it was meant to be, rustic and quirky, just loved the decor. Even the rain didn't spoil our stay it just made us make more use of the yurt. With a pit stop at the fab local microbrewery Three Legs for a tipple and a take out. We then enjoyed a game of cards a few nibbles and the log burner keeping us toasty. Luckily we got to enjoy a sunny breakfast outside the next day with chickens clucking around us, and visited the lovely goats, just wish we could of stayed longer. Just munching one of your tasty organic tomatos. Thanks to the owners for a warm greeting and for a perfect stay ☺

The owners were very friendly and accommadating.

Although we had a very pleasant stay. We were slightly disappointed with the campsite and facilities. The Yurt is advertised as sleeps four, but there are only physically two beds. We took bedding as instructed for our kids, but didn't realise we actually needed to take camp beds and bed rolls. Bed rolls were provided by the owners but the kids were a little disgruntled at sleeping on the floor. The yurt's decor is a little tired and worn, more could be made of the outside space, again looks a bit worn. The toilet facilities are basic with only one shower for the whole site and two toilets.

The whole experience from start to finish.

I booked this as a birthday gift & what a treat, pure delight. Very private, quiet & super friendly. I would definitely recommend. We spent the day in Rye, lovely eateries & the weather was perfect. We ate using the fire pit & had marshmallows too. Fab adventure. Thanks Phil

Dogwood Campsite Yurt

We were lucky enough to stay two nights in the yurt. It was beautiful, comfy, warm and cosy. Set in beautiful location and separate to the camping area, has it's own private garden. Phil the owner is a lovely man, very helpful. Facilities were all well kept and clean. The first night we laid in bed listening to Owls who must have been purched very close to us. The second night we listened to high winds, (no movement from the yurt :-) ) Lovely to see the full moon through the clear roof. Loved the goats, chickens, ducks and dogs all of which were an unexpected bonus. Highly recommend this place, would love to go back again.

Thumbs up for the yurt!

We stayed in the yurt and it was a truly unforgettable few days for our family. You are part of the camping experience as far as the children are concerned - and the sociability they enjoy - but have a secluded patch of your own to enjoy the peace of the birdsong (no radios as a rule). The yurt is large and full of character, reflecting the ethos of the owners. The roof can open to the sky when the weather is fine, or there is a heater and even a wood-burning stove inside. Two proper beds and indulgent bed linen mean the lines between camping and glamping are blurred, but this is still a very real outdoor experience, minus the arguments putting the tent up. The chickens and ducks are rather beautiful. Lots to do in the local area too.

Amazing loved every minute of it - May 2017

Me and my hubby and our 2 little girls stayed in the Yurt for 2 nights in May - we throughly enjoyed it - the Yurt is beautifully decorated inside very cosy and warm. We used the outside firepitt too cook both breakie and dinner on which the kids loved, as did my husband. Its very private and secluded the Yurt has its own decking outside and picnic table with massive brolley. There are 2 pubs within walking distance which we walked to with our little girls - they were both nice - but particulary recommend the Rainbow Trout - lovely food and outdoor play area for kids. There are rabbits, ducks, chickens all walking around the site freely which was lovely to see and on the 2nd morning we purchased freshly baked crossiants from Kathy/Phil(owners) which were lovely, We went and visited Camber Sands and Hasting during our stay - def recommend to anyone.

Beautiful place

I booked the yurt for my partners birthday and we were not disappointed. The yurt was cosy, clean and was very comfortable. We particularly liked the log burner, the roof where you can look up at the stars and the relaxed feel. The surrounding area was peaceful and so beautiful. The breakfast was a lovely touch and we felt the owners would do anything for us. Wonderful people and beautiful place. We will definately recommend to others. Thank you so much Katie and Philip x

Wonderful spot...

Just got back from a lovely weekend with my husband and our baby in the cabin at Dogswood. What an absolutely beautiful place, especially in the early morning sunshine. Our little girl loved meeting the chickens, playing in the mud and trying to eat catkins. The cabin is tucked away in a secret corner, looking out onto a woodland pond enclosed with willows and bamboo. It's simple, warm and cosy with a fantastically comfy bed and a tiny meditation deck outside. Once our baby was in bed we retreated outside to sit by the fire and watch the stars with a hot cup of tea. Magic! Feeling reinvigorated and totally blissed out after our stay. Thanks so much Phil and Katy, we'll definitely be back!

Lovely yurt

This really was a beautiful yurt. We've stayed in a few now but this was definitely the best we've come across and was excellent value for money. Its great that the owners haven't cut corners on quality - we loved the beautiful Tibetan carpets and top notch Egyptian cotton bed linen.  And even though it was March the wood stove inside kept us as warm as toast. The yurt is surrounded by decking and has its own fenced off private area with a firebowl which was great for sitting out and watching the stars which really were impressive. It was also good to be out in nature - but not too far from a pub! We loved the surrounding area and all in all have had the perfect midweek break we were looking for.
