Pod and bell tent glamping in the Berkshire woods on the edge of the North Wessex Downs

You don’t have to be a fan of Downton Abbey to visit Hollington Park Glamping, although it is popular with viewers of the famous series, located, as it is, just five minutes from Highclere Castle – the magnificent house is instantly recognisable from the screen.

Built in 1842, Highclere Castle may be one of the key historic attractions in the area but it’s by no means the oldest. Indeed it’s the woods themselves, sprawling across the North Wessex Downs, that boast some of the most ageing relics of the region – ancient trees that were probably mere saplings when Highclere’s construction started. It’s among these leafy surrounding that Hollington Park Glamping is found, tucked between ash, oak and birch.

It seems suitable that most things here are made of wood. There are, in total, just two pods and a bell tent, though if you book all three you can also pitch an extra tent to make up the numbers. The pods have everything you need. The far end of the interior is taken up by a large, built-in double bed, with a window peering out into the leaves, while out front there is a deck and outdoor garden furniture. The bell tent, too, has all the kit and caboodle provided so you can turn up with little more than your toothbrush.

The accommodation is all in a woodland clearing and accompanied by two further structures: a covered seating area and a blue bathroom shed with a hot shower and compost loo. In the centre of the clearing there’s a communal firepit, an ideal spot for socialising in the evening with your fellow pod dwellers, with surrounding benches built out of humungous tree trunks. Simply grab logs for free from the pile provided or forage in the woods.

Owner Claire lives in a little cottage a short stroll away. She’s often popping over to check everything is ok and you can order breakfast hampers from her, full of locally-sourced goodies. She can also provide directions to the nearest attractions, the Bombay Sapphire distillery being one of them. Don’t expect to find gin in your breakfast hamper though. It may be local but apparently tea and coffee still taste better with your cereal.

Pods and bell tents are accompanied by an outside decked seating area, undercover seating area, brick built firepit, each accommodation has it's own hot shower, sink and toilet right next to them, so no sharing facilities. There's a laundry room for longer stays. Each accommodation unit has a cooking station containing a gas stove and BBQ. Crockery, cutlery, pots, pans, BBQ tools, tea, coffee, sugar and milk are all provided and all bedding and towels are included. Sunbeds or hammocks are provided when the weather is good. Guests have full access to the 10 acre woodland beyond.

Suitable For

Couples, families, groups, dogs – yes. Tents (only with a pod booking), campervans, caravans and motorhomes – yes on request.

For families there are no fewer than three excellent farm parks within easy driving distance. Bucklebury Farm Park (0118 971 4002) is one of the most popular, 20 minutes away, Finkley Down Farm (01264 324141) is also excellent and takes the same length in the opposite direction – ideal if your heading to the south coast. Four Kingdoms Farm Park (01635 269678) is the closest. For most people, though, it's the walking and cycling that makes the North Wessex Downs so popular. Climb Beacon Hill or wander across famous Watership Down. Woolton Hill hosts an excellent market just 5 mins walk away on the last Saturday of every month, while Hungerford, 8 miles away, is full of old antiques shops and pubs. The Bombay Sapphire distillery (01256 890090), located in fantastically atmospheric old buildings, offers tours daily – best to book in advance. And finally of course there's magnificent Highclere Castle (01635 253210). It opens for tours through July and August but outside of these peak months you'll need to check ahead for specific dates.

Food & Drink

There are three pubs within walking distance – The Rampant Cat (01635 253474), The Furze Bush (01635 253228) and, in Highclere, The Red House (01635 255531). The Red House is closed on Mondays and doesn't serve evening meals on Sundays, but the food is excellent and there are plenty of ales on tap.

Opening Times

All year. High Season April 1st – August 31st & bank holiday weekends.

The Owner Says

Set in 10 acres of semi ancient woodland on the Hampshire Berkshire border is our small and unique glamping site. 45 minutes from London 5 minutes from the Historic Highclere Castle.

Social Distancing Measures

It is easy to socially distance at Hollington Park as we are only a small family run rural Glampsite, with only four units that are spaced a far enough distance away from each other to socially distance, whilst there are elements of the site that are communal, it is all outside therefore it is eay to stand away from other parties. We have also installed two new showers and two new flushing loos so that each unit now has it's own facilities, you do not have to share with other parties. All other guidelines issued by the government will be followed and each unit is given extra cleaning equipment if they feel they have to use it. The units will be deep cleaned between guests with a soap spray. Our general comprehensive cleaning regime will be stepped up in every way possible to align with government advice what ever it may be!

Getting There

From the A34 head towards Andover on the A343 and take the only turning available into Woolton Hill signposted 'the Rampant Cat'. Follow the road for ½ mile and as the road bends sharply right take the left hand turning onto Church Road. Follow for ½ a mile until the road bends sharply right to Eastend and forks left for Hollington. Take the left hand fork and stop immediately. On the left is a little brick and flint lodge house and some big old wrought iron gates, saying Hollington house on the walls, go through the gates and after about 100 metres there are some more wrought iron gates on the right, a little cottage with a gargoyle on the roof on the left, carry on past the featherboard fencing for 20m and turn in through the wooden gate on the left. It's necessary to have a car really but there's a train station and bus services in Newbury, 6 miles away.

Relaxing experience glamping in a pod

We stayed in a pod for the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had a lovely, relaxing time in our pod and wandering around the surrounding woodland. The pod contains everything you can think of, and the bathroom next door is amazing, with a flushing toilet and one of the best showers I've had in a long time. We enjoyed our evenings relaxing and chatting around the camp fire before retiring to one of the comfiest beds we've even slept in. Our dogs loved the place and were made to feel very welcome, particularly by Tony the Great Dane!

Relaxing, peaceful, friendly, helpful

Me and my two teenagers had two lovely days chilling in the wonderful woodland environment. Our Bedouin tent was so well thought through with touching details. Claire was so helpful and friendly. It was a treat. Thank you.

Lovely little camp site

Lovely little campsite. We stayed in a pod. Everything provided, gas hobs, cutlery, plates, fridge, tea/coffee, kettle, toaster etc. Owners very friendly and welcoming, and we fell in love with their gentle giant, Tony the great Dane. Own shower and flushing toilet, all very clean. Don't forget to bring your torch. Very relaxing, comfortable stay.

Great site and loads of space for the kids to explore.

The surrounding woodland meant there was loads of space for the kids to explore, and amenities were clean and well equipped. A hot shower was also a luxury.

Cosy glamping experience

Claire and Adam were lovely hots. Claire communicated via text on the day. Adam met us on site to show us around and was very helpful. We also met their lovely dogs! 2 sausage dogs and a massive Great Dane puppy! The pods are located in a lovely clearing in the woods with a fire pit in the middle. Each pod has a gas grill and coal BBQ outside under a wooden awning, great for Al fresco cooking. The pods themselves are compact but with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The bed is great for 2 people with lots of blankets and cushions to keep you warm & cozy. The pods have a heater too but they really are warm, even on the cold wet night that we had. If you are tall the bed might be a bit short so bear that in mind. Shower & toilet facilities are fine and clean, just a few steps from the pods. Full flushing loo and full shower, but not the warmest, and if you are tall the shower cubicle is very cramped. Overall a lovely stay and great value for money.

A real woodland treat

We loved Hollington Park, it's a great introduction to camping guaranteed to convince even the most reluctant camper. The facilities are excellent, clean as a whistle and handmade with style from the woods. The woods are great for romping around and waking up to the dawn chorus was a real treat. The bell tent was huge, lovely comfy bed and all the bits and bobs you need to rustle up a lovely meal around the campfire. Totally recommended.

A weekend in the Bell Tent

I stayed in the tent with my daughter and my 19 month old Grandaughter. It was an excellent weekend and would recommend the Bell tent rather than the pods if you need a little extra room The owners were friendly and very helpful My Granddaughter loved the woods and the animals Thanks you for a lovely weekend camping

quaint shabby chic

Lovely grounds better then expected, very pretty. Owners very friendly with two super cute doggies. Stayed in the Bell tent very spacious clean/tidy. Lots of nature and woodland around which makes it feel secluded and private (advice, take your insect repelllent). Relaxed atomosphere . Toilet and shower areas clean. 15-30mins walk to local pubs but check days and times for food. Everything available to cook your own food at the campsite inc gas hob/bbq. Did get quite chilly at night would have been nice to have had some coal provided to keep the stove and fires going as only had minimal amount of kindle and damp newspaper. Campsite gets very dark glad I brought my own tea light candles, they do provide many candle holders and lanterns but all of the candles had been used and no fresh provided. Overall lovely place would stay again.

Fabulous spot, great bell tent, wonderful owners

We had a really great night in the beautifully decorated bell tent set in fabulous private woodlands. It was set away from the pods in a private area with everything you need including bedding, towels and all cooking equipment. The owners were so lovely, helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend a visit.
