A luxury en-suite hut with a pizza oven and outdoor bathtub, just a few hundred yards from the Ridgeway

It's only right that you can stay in a shepherd's hut at Folly Farm in Berkshire. After all, this is very much a shepherd's setting. The farm covers the chalky landscape where the Chiltern Hills meet the North Wessex Downs – the sort of quintessentially English scenery you might expect in a Hardy novel – and there are sheep, as well as cows, in the surrounding meadows. You don't need to be a shepherd to stay here though. The 'Little Fleece' hut is not exactly a humble abode. With an en-suite shower room, a wood-fired pizza oven and an outdoor bathtub where you can soak and enjoy the stars, this is a rural escape where you can secretly enjoy a little pampering. It's a fine place for a holiday in the hills.

Just a few hundred yards from the Ridgeway National Trail, Little Fleece at Folly Farm is an entirely self contained shepherd's hut and the only accommodation on site, so you really have the place to yourself. Inside it has everything you need, with a clever layout that maximises the space. The double bed, for example, folds away into the wall to reveal a seating and dining area below, while the kitchen is cleverly compact yet still has everything you could possibly need, including a fridge, sink, hobs and a kettle. A wood-burner keeps the whole place snug and cosy – a particularly delight in the winter months when you'll delight in hearing the rain tap-a-tapping on the corrugated roof – while the en-suite shower room has an excellent shower as well as thoughtful little touchers, like the British-made shampoo bars and toiletries. In all, owners David and Jane and their daughter Tory, have clearly thought every detail through. Though there's a hairdryer, bathrobes and a welcome pack with jams and cakes, there is no WiFi and they haven't installed a television. This is a place for enjoying your immediate surroundings, not scrolling through TV channels.

And what surroundings they are. Outside your hut there's a grass and gravel area where you can make use of the pizza oven and barbecue pit, while, beyond, footpaths lead up on to the ridgeway or in to the local village where there's a welcoming, family-run pub overlooking the cricket pitch. Rise early and you'll catch the sight of horses riding out on the downs as you walk the ridgeway – there are several gallops in the area where racers let off steam – and there's also a good chance of spotting the best of the local wildlife in the morning hours. Come evening, meanwhile, and there's only one place to be. The wood-fired bathtub, shielded by a screen of woven hazel but otherwise open to the elements, is a perfect place to gaze at the stars. If it rains it can be all the more atmospheric and the perfect place to soak before retreating back into the hut with a good book.

Nearby

Little Fleece is just a few hundred yards south of the Ridgeway National Trail, a spectacular walking route that runs through the chalky Chiltern Hills and, as the name suggests, follows a ridge right through to the Wessex Downs further west. If you're an early riser you might see local race horses training on the gallops en route. Once on the trail, you can follow the well-marked route or detour off on other smaller footpaths. In particular, it's a 15-minute walk (down hill) to the village pub, The Harrow (01635 281260) in West Ilsley, which overlooks the cricket field. If your on the hunt for heritage, it's half an hour's drive to Highclere Castle (01635 253210), now better known as the fictional Downton Abbey, and it's the same to Oxford, where you can go punting, exploring the colleges or duck into museums on a rainy day. For museums, the nearby Didcot Railway Centre (01235 817200) is also well worth visiting.

Food & Drink

The nearest pub is the family-run Harrow (01635 281260) in West Ilsley, full of horse-racing-related memorabilia and overlooking the cricket field. In East Ilsley you'll find the Crown and Horns (1635281545) – walkable in about 50 minutes or a five-minute drive. Further afield, a particular pick of the pubs is The Bell Inn at Aldworth (01635 578272; 15 minutes' drive) – it's been in the same family for over two centuries and was recently CAMRA’s 'Pub of the Year' – while The Eyston Arms at East Hendred (01235 833320) is particularly good for food.

5 star hut in a beautiful setting

My stay here was brilliant and completely surpassed all expectations. As a solo female traveller it felt cosy, safe and secure, it is the only unit on site and the farmhouse is next door - the family even agreed to be my check-in buddy for when I was due back from hiking. The hut was spotlessly clean with high quality furnishings and linen, very warm and dry, and lovely touches such as goats milk shampoo bars and full electric shower. The outdoor bath under the stars was amazing and would be very romantic for two! Great for animal lovers as surrounded by fields of sheep, cows and wildlife; a highlight was seeing hedgehogs, partridges and pheasants on my night time walks, so take a torch! Will definitely book this again.

Just wow!

I can not recommend this beautiful hidden gem enough! So many thoughtful touches throughout the hut that make it extra special! Jane, David and Tory are exceptional hosts and have thought of everything. When we arrived Jane had made homemade bread and left the fridge stocked with jams, marmalade’s. Butter, milk and yogurts, the hut was also stocked with breakfast and lots of tea and coffee and I loved the goats milk soaps in the bathroom. The bbq, wood-fired pizza oven and wood-fired bath/hot tub make the experience. Being able to sit under the stars in the evening was wonderful! The setting is gorgeous and waking up surrounded by animals in the sunshine makes for a good start to the day. The town is a little over a 10 minute drive but we only went down once to get something to eat. David, Jane and Tory thank you so much for accommodating us, we will be back again for sure!!

Perfect getaway with delightful hosts!

We spent two great nights at Little Fleece, making the most of the beautiful North Wessex Downs and the surrounding farm land. David, Jane and Tory were excellent hosts, happy to provide any advice on the local area and ensure our stay was exactly how we wanted it. The outdoor bath is a real treat (once it gets going) and some of the nearby pubs (The Bell and The Eyston Arms) are a perfect play to relax after a day walking the Ridgeway. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a quick break, a real gem.
