Two pre-pitched furnished bell tents in the grounds of a boutique hotel, complete with a swimming pool, jacuzzi and restaurant

The Cool Camping team have seen the full campsite spectrum over the last decade, from the most rustic of farmyard fields with room for a tiny tent, to full blown luxury lounges with everything you could possibly need. There's no prizes for guessing where Glampotel position themselves on the scale. Firmly footed at the higher end of the camping world, this two-tent glamping hideout in the gardens of a hotel stakes its claim as one of the most luxurious sites in the south.

Two miles from the banks of the River Thames, as it snakes its way towards London, this conveniently located site seems tailor made for an easy out-of-town break. It's a 45-minute train journey from London to nearby Marlow but the scenery here is as rural as you want. The river wriggles through meadows, flanked by mature trees, and to the west lay the Chilterns, ideal for daytime exploring. You needn't even walk to find a homely village pub – the hotel bar already has that covered.

The camping itself comes in the form of two pre-pitched, bell tent-like structures, perched on flat wooden platforms at the bottom of the garden. Inside they have king-sized beds, wooden bedside furnishings and all the bedding you require, while outside guest have access to the full facilities of the hotel. You can swim in the outdoor heated swimming pool, lounge in the jacuzzi or enjoy a morning coffee in the walled courtyard. The hotel restaurant also serves complimentary breakfast. The tents are best thought of simply as a boutique, outdoor bedroom. Chocolate on pillow included.

The village beyond has no fewer than three pubs within strolling distance – not including the hotel itself. The Chequers is perhaps the most renowned (and the beer garden out front has a pleasant buzz on sunny weekends), while The Jolly Farmer is enough of a village establishment that it plays host to the post office inside. By bike you can continue further, rattling along the riverside towpath towards the pleasant town of Henley, or hop in a car and venture into the Chilterns.

The bell tent-like abodes have king sized beds, bedside furnishing and lamps and all the bedding you need. Guests have full access to the hotel facilities. These include a restaurant, bar and café, indoor spa treatments, an outdoor heated swimming pool and jacuzzi. The hotel restaurant also serves complimentary breakfast.

Suitable For

Glamping adults only. Tents, campervans, caravans, pets, children – no.

The Thames Path and the Chilterns Cycleway are two of the best ways to explore the surrounding area Pedal far enough upstream and you reach well-heeled Henley-on-Thames, famous for its annual regatta and dotted with independent shops and restaurants. You can head south to Legoland (0871 222 2001) in historic Windsor – also within cycling distance, though, not on any of the designated routes.

Food & Drink

The hotel restaurant is superb and serves complimentary breakfast. Lunch and dinner reservations can also be made. During the day you can also grab tea and coffee from the bar and sit out in the enclosed courtyard. If you're desperate to head elsewhere, try Uncle Toms Cabin (01628 483339) or The Chequers (01628 481232). Both pubs are within easy walking distance, the latter with an open fire when cold, an excellent beer garden when warm and an eclectic menu all year round.
