Family glamping on a working farm, with animals to pet and acres to roam

The barn at New Barn Farm is not just any barn, it’s a cuddle barn. Fluffy bunnies and cheeky little guinea pigs inhabit the place waiting for glamping guests to pop in for their daily cuddle fix. Book a stay here and there’s even an option to look after a guinea pig or a pair of chickens for the duration of your holiday – or to join in with pony grooming time. And there are other animals to meet here too: kune kune pigs, pygmy goats, donkeys, ducks and dogs. It’s the perfect place for people who want a pet for the weekend and to experience the cuddly side of life on the farm.

It’s also not just any farm but a Feather Down farm. It’s part of a network of farm stays offering off-grid holidays in roomy safari tents (or ‘tented cottages’ as the Feather Down team likes to call them). Lit only by candles and oil lamps, the rustic but homely accommodation is provided by Feather Down and invariably lovely with log burners, proper beds, en suite loos and cute kids’ cupboard bedrooms as particular highlights. And while the well-set up accommodation varies little from place to place, the on-site experience is as unique as the farms you’ll find it on with hosting left in the capable hands of Feather Down’s partner farmers.

At New Barn Farm in Bedfordshire, that’s Will, Hannah and their kids. They’ll show you around the site which, in addition to the cuddle barn and animal enclosures, has a kids’ play area, pizza oven and an honesty shop that’s well stocked with local goodies. There are eight safari tents here, backed into trees with six-acres of grazing space in front of them. As well as the farm animals, you can expect some wild ones too; owls, woodpeckers, foxes, badgers and muntjac deer are all regular visitors here.

Off site, there’s more animal magic with a safari theme at the drive-through Woburn Safari Park or, a little further away, Whipsnade Zoo. Closer to your base in the little village of Carlton, there’s plenty of walking and cycling along and around the nearby River Ouse as well as water-based fun at Box End Park’s lakes. There’s even indoor climbing and sky-diving if you’re brave enough. It’s enough to build up an appetite – which is good news as there’s plenty of food on offer back at the farm by way of the twice-weekly pizza nights and Hannah’s home-cooked meals. Tagines of local lamb, tasty beef stews and veggie-stuffed lasagnes are culinary cuddles that demonstrate it’s not just the animals who are well looked after at New Barn Farm.

Each family-sized safari tent has three rooms: a double bedroom, a bunk room and the main living space within which is a cute cupboard bed suitable for younger children. The living space also has a fully-equipped kitchen, a wood-burning stove, dining area and a sofa and each tent has a private en-suite, flushing toilet. There is running cold water to both the hand basin and the kitchen sink. A private hot-water shower is not quite en suite but private and just outside your tent. There is also a sheltered veranda outside with two deck chairs, a picnic table and outdoor cooking area with a barbecue. The site also has a pizza oven with a shared eating area, an honesty shop, space for games and play equipment.

Suitable For

Glampers – yes. Big groups and single-sex groups – by arrangement only. Campers, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, dogs – no.

The animals on site provide some entertainment, right where you are. To explore off site, how about hiring bikes from the farm? The gentle undulations of the Ouse Valley provide extensive opportunities for walking and cycling. In the nearby village of Olney, Emberton Country Park (nine miles away; 01908 252570) has some family-friendly routes around lakes, glades and meadows with cafes and play equipment too. Box End Park (10 miles from New Barn Farm; 01234 846222) offers water-based fun on two purpose-built lakes. There's an aqua park playground (suitable for ages six and up) or, for older kids and adults, the opportunity to water ski, wakeboard or enjoy open-water swimming. There's yet more extreme action at Twinwoods Adventure (0134 816350) where there's a climbing wall, indoor skydiving and more. Woburn Safari Park and Whipsnade Zoos (0344 2251826) are both possible day trips by car (22 and 40 miles from site respectively).

Food & Drink

A great selection of local produce and home-cooked meals can be bought from the on-site honesty shop. For any extras, head to the Hill Farm Shop (01234 781405), in nearby Sharnbrook (six miles away). While there, stop off for a delicious slice of victoria sponge at The Cake Shop (01234 781021). Meanwhile, back in Carlton, The Fox (01234 720235) is a pretty thatched village pub that's popular with locals.
