Family-sized, lakeside geo-desic domes with home comforts near Blackpool

Ream Hills Holiday Park, near the bright lights of Blackpool, is home to 60-plus accommodation options and has space for 50 touring caravans. At first glance, it is not the stuff that Cool Camping dreams are made of. But bear with us — both now and when you arrive on-site at the professional-looking reception desk. This family-run holiday park is a little quirkier than the average, and we are here only to discuss their coolest accommodation options; a cluster of rather lovely lakeside geodesic domes.

Each dome is a little bubble with views across the water and, once you’re inside, there’s little clue that you are sharing the spot with so many others. And anyway, even we have to admit that there are advantages to staying on a large site like this; advantages like on-site wakeboarding, kayaking and a licensed cafe and bar in summer as well as a location in 160 acres of Lancashire countryside.

For now though, let’s get back to your little bubble which is, in fact, not so little after all. There are two options: four-berth and six-berth domes. Whichever you choose, you’ll find an open-plan living and sleeping space with double-height ceilings and comfy sofas at the front. Plonk yourself on it and you’ll be facing a huge picture window onto the water and, should you somehow tire of the view, there’s a pull-down screen that turns your dome into a boutique cinema of sorts. The space behind the sofa is the bedroom with proper beds for grown-ups and fun, hanging hammock beds for kids.

Outside, there’s a deck with outdoor furniture and an amenities building per cabin, which means you have your own equipped kitchen and a private bathroom, too. So far, so good and — thankfully for those who don’t fancy the sociable side of a busy holiday park — so self-contained. Should you wish to explore the immediate surroundings, though, there’s an on-site cafe/bar just a few steps away and entertainment by way of activities on the lake, which is home to Blackpool Wake Park. The dazzling entertainment of Blackpool is just four miles away, and there’s genteel seaside fun at Lytham and St Anne’s a few miles further. There’s no escape from the fact that these quirky, comfortable domes are on a holiday park, the likes of which are not always popular with Cool Campers. But it’s small (by holiday park standards), family-run and friendly and if you’re looking for quirky accommodation near Blackpool, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Nearby

In the summer months, you can't get much closer to the closest attraction: Blackpool Wakepark (01253 836543) which uses the lake outside your dome for watersports including wakeboarding, kayaking and an inflatable assault course. The bright lights of Blackpool are only four miles away and it's a 10–15 minute drive to the pleasure beach and all its attractions. The coastal towns of Lytham and St Annes — which both have a plethora of shops, cosmopolitan cafes/bars and restaurants — are both about eight miles away and the sandy beach at St Anne's is a nice place for a dip in the sea. A 40-minute car journey will take you to Beacon Fell Country Park, 20 miles away, a place of natural beauty that's perfect for exploring.

Food & Drink

There is a gastropub, The Eagle (01253 542141) at Weeton, a mile away, with freshly-prepared and inventive food and a variety of locally distilled spirits and cocktails. The village is also home to the Black Powder Gin Distillery with over 40 varieties of artisan, award-winning, traditionally distilled gins. In the summer, the cafe at Blackpool Wakepark — The Greedy Goose, is a short stroll away from your dome.
