Modern Lake District glamping pods among the trees, with exceptional views of Blencathra

Blencathra looms large in the north of the Lake District. The mountain, peaking at 2,848 feet, dominates any journey into the park from Penrith, with a series of steep spines running down from its crest. For generations the mountain was known as ‘Saddleback’ before guidebook author Alfred Wainwright re-popularised the Cumbric name. And, at the foot of Clough Head opposite, a new collection of glamping pods makes the most of this magnificent view in much the same manner. Owner Can Hodgson has called the pods not One, Two and Three, but Yan, Tan and Tethra – the old Cumbric for the numbers.

While their names may have a historic quality, the pods are anything but ancient. This is the real, 21st-century glamping deal. Set in a small wood – a mixture of mature Scots pines and a newly planted copse – the pods were added to the farm in 2019 and feature the likes of under-floor heating, en-suite shower rooms and a compact modern kitchen. Outside there’s a deck and a terrace with a barbecue, plus that ever present asset – the incredible view of mighty Saddleback.

The pods are in close proximity but don’t overlook one another, making them good for groups and individual bookings alike, while the surroundings are populated by rabbits and the occasional roe deer. The farm is a part of the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, meaning it’s managed to actively encourage greater biodiversity, and kestrels, nuthatches and redstarts frequent the skies here too.

If the view doesn’t entice you out for a walk or bike ride then you might just have a screw loose. Ewe Love Camping Pods is perfectly placed for immersing yourself in the scenery, whether it’s heading into the traditional hay meadow and following the footpath up to the Old Coach Road and eventually to Great Dodd (2,812 feet) or heading across to tackle Blencathra itself. Those who know the mountain will no doubt have heard of the famously challenging scramble up Sharp Edge. “The crest itself is sharp enough for shaving”, Wainwright wrote. It’s well worth doing if you have the mountain skills.

It’s not all scrambling and heads for heights though. It’s a 15-minute drive to pretty Keswick, around the same to Castelrigg Stone Circles (thousands of years old) and 15 in the opposite direction to Ullswater for watersports and boat trips. Bring your dookers or hire a byat for the day. There’s a little more Cumbrian for you – ‘swimming trunks’ and ‘boat’. Then again, if you’re an offcomer you might never quite understand.

Nearby

Ewe Love Camping Pods is situated on the challenging coast-to-coast cycle route and cyclists passing through will find secure bike storage on the site. There are, of course, plenty of other popular road and mountain biking routes around, along with the endless list of Lake District hiking trails. The OS Explorer map you'll want for the local area is OL5 or get the Keswick and Penrith Landranger map number 90. The most famous spot, of course, is the whopping great mountain that you look out on from your pod – Blencathra – on which there are numerous routes for all levels, including the challenging scramble along Sharp Edge, which is not for the faint hearted. En route to Keswick one day, be sure to stop off at ancient Castlerigg Stone Circle (0370 333 1181), constructed at some point between 3,300–900 BC (during the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages). Ullswater is a short drive away and, being England’s second largest lake, has a huge range of activities and water sports to offer, including sailing, kayaking, and fishing trips. Rookin House Equestrian Centre (017684 83561) is a family-owned adventure venue with everything from air rifle shooting and archery to riding lessons and trekking.

Food & Drink

Scales, a five-minute drive away, is probably the nearest place to quench your thirst. The White Horse Inn (017687 79883) has paths up Blencathra immediately from the beer garden. Threlkeld, a couple of minutes further down the road, is also a popular sport with scramblers who've gone up or down Blencathra's sharp spines. The Horse and Farrier (017687 79688), on the roadside, dates from 1688 and has a great atmosphere, while there's a quaint café in the village hall (017687 79501). In Keswick, we recommend Fellpack (017687 71177) for takeaway sandwiches and healthy evening meals, Bar eS (017687 75222) for Mexican tapas and good craft beers and Casa Bella (017687 75575) for Italian cuisine.

All year, except December and January.

The Owner Says

In a quiet corner amongst trees our three luxury glamping pods offer a relaxing base with stunning views of Blencathra.

They are in an excellent position to explore the North Lakes, walk or bike from the door or just soak up the scenery and relax.

Our Pods are locally made in Cumbria, they are cosy with underfloor heating the double bed and sofa bed come with linen. There is an en suite shower/toilet and a microwave and fridge.

The pods are ideal for couples and families, each pod sleeps up to four. The car park is nearby.

Highgate Close is a working farm that is run alongside Glencoyne, a National Trust farm where the owners live, on the shores of Ullswater. Both farms have grazing rights on Matterdale common, and almost meet on the tops as the crow flies.

Social Distancing Measures

Our pods are self contained, each has its own toilet and shower. The pods have their own decks and terrace for barbeque  and fire pit. The pods have plenty of space between them. Our linen is laundered commercially, and have been advised this will be to hospital standards.

Getting There

From Penrith, take the A66 West and, after 8 miles, turn left onto the A5091. After 500 yards turn right, following the brown sign for Gill Head Camping. Go 1½ miles past Red Syke Farm and pine trees on your right, then take the next left. At end of the road, take the right over the cattle grid into Highgate Close’s yard. Parking for the pods is past the sheep shed on your right.

From Keswick, take the A66 east towards Penrith for 6 miles to the White Horse at Scales on your left. Turn right to Walthwaite, then down the hill, turn right over the cattle grid and go through the farm (gated road) up the hill and turn right at end of road (over the cattle grid) into Highgate Close’s yard. Parking for the pods is on your right past the sheep shed.

There are trains and buses to Penrith. From Penrith buses go to Keswick and stop at Troutbeck but it's a 2 mile walk from there, so we would recommend a taxi.

Little bit of heaven

Arrived to a lovely little pod. Super clean and cosy. Perfectly equipped and more spacious than I expected. All contact with host via email were quickly responded to and very accommodating. Enjoyed 3 nights here and didn’t want to leave. Gorgeous location, perfect for some much needed peace and quiet. The stars at night are dreamy and an added treat. Perfect spot for anyone who is into walking given its location or ideal for those after a little rest and a walk around the local villages. Already looking to re book to get back in those hills. Loved every minute.

Relaxing and cosy with awesome view

We're a family of four and loved our three night stay at Ewe Love which is perfectly located to explore the north lakes. We liked the fact that there's only three pods so it was very tranquil. The pods are so beautifully designed and cleverly laid out. We had everything we needed. The shower was great, the bed comfy, the sofa bed was good for our daughters. There's a lovely deck area overlooking Blencathra and we sat out here toasting marshmallows over the fire-pit and having a barbecue. The field opposite was full of sheep which was lovely until our final night when they all escaped and started head-butting our pod waking us all up! Apart from that it was a great stay and we'll definitely be back.

Thanks for your positive feedback ,sorry about hooligan sheep! Will keep them in different field until fence made higher!

A relaxing setting with stunning views

We had a short stay in Tethera, the measures put in place regarding Covid were reassuring. The pod was immaculate, a very comfy bed and sofa. The kitchen has everything required and good quality products used. Just two small things I would of liked- a microwave splatter guard/plate cover and a dust pan and brush for the kitchen floor. The location is the perfect balance between feeling away from it all (the view across the valley and Blencathra is something to never tire of!) And close enough to the main road for easy commute to Keswick and local attractions and mountain walks. I would highly recommend a stay here.

A relaxing setting with stunning views

Our stay in Tethera was wonderful. The location is the perfect balance of feeling away from it all but with easy access to the main road and short commute to Keswick and surrounding places of interest. The pod was immaculate and has a very comfy bed and sofa. The kitchen has everything required, just two things I would of found useful would be a microwave splatter guard/plate cover and a dust pan and brush for the kitchen floor. I would highly recommend a stay here.

Response from Ewe Love Camping Pods

Thanks for your review, glad you had a good stay, Thanks for the equipment suggestion, we are putting some microwave lidded pots in and a dust pan and brush in the pods. Makes sense! Thanks

Idyllic remote and secluded location. Comfortable pods.

This was our first time staying in a pod. Its a big step up in comfort and ease compared to conventional tent camping. Like camping, the weather can make or break a holiday - so if the sun shines this is a lovely place to stay. Beautiful stunning views all round. Pods are better suited to two (plus maybe a small child), but maybe not for three.

The tan pod was amazing had everything we needed for our 2 night stay the bed was super comfy as was the sofa loved having a toilet and shower makes life so much easier with kids. The pod was very clean and tidy. The location was perfect only 15 minute drive into keswick if that but was set back in farm land away from everyone didnt see a single soul whilst there which is why we loved it a little get a way from the hustle and bustle of life so peaceful and the views of blencathra well was worth the stay just for that. The pods are heated and we was very cosy even in storm Dennis will be looking forward to booking again cant wait 😁😁

Pods are well put together and immaculate inside. Kitchen was fully equipped with everything you could need. Couldn’t recommend more. Great location, will be back soon!

Great!

Fantastic view from right from the pod, cosy and warm inside (even in October), perfect place to be alone together with the people that matter to you. Only thing I would want for is a hob, though we did have fun having to be inventive and cook in a microwave for the first time ever...Microwave and barby...not a bad combo!

Great pod, great spot, great holiday! Peaceful location with stunning views of Blencathra. Pod was warm, comfortable and nicely stocked with a few essentials to get us started. Thank you for allowing one dog in Yan pod too. Fully recommend.

A room with a view

These cool little pods have everything you need, and are surrounded by absolutely beautiful countryside. They didn’t feel too close together, you really felt like you could be the only people around for miles. Inside, the pods are cosy but perfectly formed. Super comfy bed, fab shower, and so handy to have the bbq and microwave to cook with. All bedding (and a blanket!) is provided but make sure to bring towels. Loved it and would highly recommend.

Fab weekend away

Just enjoyed a fabulous weekend at Ewe Love. These pods were amazing and comfortably slept a family of 3. They are built to a very high standard and were spotlessly clean inside. They were well equipped and with the help of the BBQ outside, we easily were able to cater for ourselves. There was also excellent communication from the owners and great directions to find the site. A definite 10/10 from us and we will be booking again for next year!!

What a fantastic stay!

Just back from a brilliant, relaxing stay in Yan Pod. The pod was spotlessly clean, warm and really well equipped. Just a short drive to the nearest pub if you want to it out and close to Keswick. The whole family (and the dog!) really enjoyed the stay and will definitely be back.

What a lovely, peaceful spot. A great location close to Keswick, Ullswater and not far from Penrith but far enough up the track to be calm, peaceful and beautiful. Views are fab. Pods are clean, comfortable, warm and cute! Will definitely be back.

Relaxing Holiday

What a fantastic place. The pods are extremely well-equipped and the owner is at hand for any questions you might have. The beds are comfortable, the wet room room was great. Visited for 4 nights and didn't want to leave. We'll definitely be coming back and recommending this site to others. Although the weather wasn't great we still had a very relaxing holiday, no TV / WiFi, lovely peaceful and quiet - one of the best we've had!! Even the dog enjoyed himself ! Jackie & Tim

Me and my partner both stayed here for the weekend, and we was blown away! The view is incredible, and the camping pod is perfect, it has everything you need and more. It was a good location so close to Aiya waterfall and Ullswater lake, and so many mountains to clim with little rivers and lakes near by. Would defiantly recommend for couples and family, and will be returning soon😃

Great Location, Even Better Views!

What a fantastic place. The pods are situated on the site of a farm with sheep grazing in the field opposite. To be in such a stunning location, at one with nature, was one of the biggest highlights of our trip as we were able to fully switch off from our busy work lives. We were the only guests there which was a pleasant bonus and the owner very kindly let us take another pod last minute. The pods are extremely well-equipped and the owner is at hand for any questions you might have. The beds are comfortable, the en-suite shower room surprisingly spacious and the whole site was clean and tidy. Visited for 3 days/4 nights and didn't want to leave. We felt we had the best 'glamping' accommodation in the Lake District. We'll definitely be coming back and recommending this site to others. Many thanks for such a great holiday - one of the best we've had!!
