Luxury pod glamping on the edge of a pretty Cumbrian village between the Lake District and Hadrian’s Wall

Sunset is a great time to sit on the veranda of your pod at Hayton Hideaways. The view, with the sun setting over distant hills, is fantastic but which of those hills to walk tomorrow? There’s nearby Castle Carrock, Blencathra in the Lake District and Criffel over the border in Scotland; all visible in the panorama. Decisions, decisions.

With such an inspiring view, it’s no wonder that three of the luxury glamping pods at Hayton Hideaways are named after the fells. The fourth is named after another local landmark the Gelt – a nearby wooded river that’s also well worth a walk. This is Cumbria at its best; the green countryside between Hadrian’s Wall and the Lake District. But even without one of Britain’s best-known historic landmarks and its best-loved national park within a 30-minute drive, this place would be worth a visit.

The four luxury glamping pods are situated on a farm with a friendly, traditional pub just a short stroll across fields away. Mention that you’re staying at Hayton Hideaways, Jo and Dan’s place, and you’ll be welcomed like a local yourself. Your hosts, farmer Dan and his wife, are as much a part of village life as the annual May Day Celebrations, Beer Festival, Scarecrow Competition and Open Gardens Event. They’ll let you know if there’s anything going on during your stay and are happy to give you tips on places to visit.

But what of the accommodation itself? Each of the locally crafted, luxury timber pods sleeps up to four and is self-contained with an equipped kitchen, shower room and toilet. Outside, each has a decked veranda, a fire pit and barbecue. Criffel and Blencathra pods have a sunroom so you can enjoy the views in all weathers. If you like your glamping with an emphasis on the glam, choose Blencathra and hire the optional hot tub. Do that, and procrastinating over which fell to walk tomorrow might just take a little longer.

All pods at Hayton Hideaways are self-contained with electricity and a water supply. They all have a made-up double bed and sofa bed with bedding provided and a television. They each have a shower room with shower, toilet and sink and towels are provided. The kitchenette in each has a fridge, microwave, two-ring hob, toaster, kettle, crockery and cooking utensils. Two pods, Gelt and Carrock, have a decked area outside with seating and a patio where you can use a fire pit or barbecue. Logs and marshmallows are available to buy from Jo and Dan. Criffel and Blencathra pods both have a sun room too and you can hire a hot tub (at additional cost) with Blencathra as well.

Suitable For

Glampers only, couples, families, groups, dogs – yes. Campers, campervans, caravans, motorhomes – no.

There’s a shortcut across a field to the children’s play area in Hayton which also has a pretty church and a friendly pub. The village also has a private swimming pool which you can hire by the hour (07407 008000). There are walks and cycle route (Sustrans route C72) straight from the site. The market town of Brampton is three miles from Hayton Hideaways, with Talkin Tarn country park a couple of miles further where there’s boating and paddleboarding available. Carlisle is seven miles from Hayton and Hadrian’s Wall is nearby. A great place to start exploring it is at Birdoswald Roman Fort (0370 333 1181), 10 miles from the glamping site from where you can walk to the famous and photogenic tree at Sycamore Gap. The Scottish border is less than 20 miles from Hayton, and the Lake District National Park is just 30 miles south. The coast, within the Solway Firth Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is about the same distance west.

Food & Drink

There are a range of food and drink options which you can pre-order for your pod including BBQ packs, Cumbrian breakfast hampers, packed lunches and bottles of prosecco or Champagne (all at extra cost). The closest pub, The Stone Inn (01228 670896) is a five-minute walk away but there are a range of other recommended country pubs within a few minutes’ drive including The String of Horses (01228 670297), The Queen Inn, the Duke of Cumberland (01228 670341) and The Pheasant Inn (01228 560102). There’s also Hayton Farm Shop with a little tea room attached (01228 670518). But for more supplies and places to eat out, head for Brampton, three miles away.

Absolutely superb stay at Hayton Hideaways

A truly wonderful experience and we couldn’t have been looked after any better! The pods are excellent and have everything you could ever need. They are warm, cosy and spacious, but most of all, really peaceful. The views were really something as well. Jo, Dan and the boys were really welcoming and made sure we were well looked after! They even dropped off a little bottle of bubbly for the birthday boy too! When booking, go for the breakfast!! You won’t be disappointed and you’ll certainly be well fed! Overall, we had an amazing time and we fully recommend Hayton Hideaways to everyone. We will most certainly be rebooking for next year! Thank you so much for looking after us, and for making our weekend truly special. Keith and Connor xx

Fab location and lovely pod

Just spent 4 nights in Blencathra with the family. Really nice clean pod and a quiet location. Hot tub was a real treat. The kids loved Eddie the sheep! Took a fantastic hike along Hadrian’s Wall and enjoyed trip into Carlisle. And the nearby Gelt Woods is a must. Jo and Dan are really friendly hosts. Thanks for a lovely week!

Stunning views, great hospitality and comfortable pod

First I must say that Jo and Dan are very friendly and made us feel very welcomed. They even left a little treat for my birthday, which was highly appreciated. There are only four pods on the farm and I believe a last ( and slightly bigger one) will be build in 2022. The site is very quiet and the way that the pods are placed you still have your privacy, even when you are in the hot tub. The views are just stunning and of course you can also meet Eddie the sheep! This was the perfect family gateway with a football pitch just in front and a play park just 2 minutes walk. There is also a pub less then 5 minutes walk and few forest walks near by. The family pod we stayed (Crieffel) had a separate “dinning” area which means that for raining days or colder weather you can still enjoy your cuppa with the views. There is also a fire pit already there and plenty place for BBQ. We truly enjoyed our stay and definitely recommend this site, especially if you want to relax!

Fantastic break

Fantastic break

Absolutely fantastic pod, great location, everything you want for glamping.

Lovely quiet stay

The pod was lovely and the surroundings very relaxing. Great stay!

Everything you need

Stayed for 4 nights at the Criffel pod. First of all what we noticed when we arrived at the pod is that it was very clean and tidy. It has everything you need and more. Loved the jacuzzi. The whole stay was very relaxing and comfortable. Would definitely recommend, and hopefully will come back again.

Lovely, relaxing getaway

Had the most brilliant weekend staying in one of the cabins with my two friends and dog. We needed to make a few changes but everything was accommodated so quickly and simply! I highly recommend getting the breakfast as the food was such amazing quality and a great start to the day. I couldn't recommend this place more and next time I stay I'll definitely be booking the hot tub! Thanks so much

Totally Chilled

We have just got back from a 3 night stay with our Bulldog (Winston) and had a fab time. We stayed in the Gelt pod which is dog friendly and the place was great. Nicely furnished, clean, tidy and importantly warm (the weather wasn’t to bad in fairness). The site is lovely and very quiet - just what we wanted and the village and pub is a short walk away. Found lots to do and had a great walk around Gelt woods. Will definitely be back and already looking to book our next trip.

Amazing stay with lovely hosts!

We recently spent 2 nights at Hayton Hideaways and we had a brilliant time! The accommodation was exceptional and the views were fantastic. The location offers several activities, from walking/hiking in the vicinity to visiting Hadrian’s Wall/Roman Ruins and the Lake District. Alongside the super lovely hosts, we also met Eddie the resident pet sheep who was quite the character! Highly recommend and we will definitely be returning in the future!

An incredible experience in a picturesque location

Just returned from an amazing 3 night stay at Hayton Hideaways with my wife Judy and son Harry for what was an incredibly relaxing short break to re-celebrate my 50th Birthday after last years difficulties. Dan and Jo are the best hosts. They are very friendly, punctual and go out of their way to make sure your experience is all you’d expect plus more. They have done an amazing job in transforming this working farm into the perfect family get away. The pod is clean, warm and functional with all the amenities you could possibly need for your stay. The views and surrounding areas are breathtaking and well worth the visit for this alone. You spend your days exploring the countryside before getting back to a soak in the hot tub. Such was the incredible time we had, that as soon as we got home, we were straight online to look at booking a return visit. Finally, if you have time, say hello to Luna the Border Collie but especially the star of the holiday, Eddie the earless sheep, who has developed a fondness for a mini carrot or 2 🥕
