Serenity Camping is a peaceful and relaxed campsite located between the North York Moors and beautiful sandy beaches

The sleepy, seaside settlement of Hinderwell on the North Yorkshire coast, is a real village of old. Children stroll to the public tennis courts, a local notice board advertises church groups or community gatherings and two excellent pubs compete for your custom along the high street. There’s a local butcher, a chippie and a village hall that hosts kids’ parties and other local events, plus of course, the staple of any village that’s truly worth a visit… a good campsite.

Hinderwell’s campsite relects the traditional, olde-world charm of the village itself, focusing on simple pleasures and with a peaceful, timeless atmosphere. The village, meanwhile, plods along at an equally relaxed and homely pace – a welcoming environment for any visitor. Its name comes from the 5th century tale of St Hilda, who touched the ground and produced a spring that still flows from Hilda’s Well today. The name of the campsite, you quickly realise, is equally as literal.

Silence is golden and this is very much the mantra at Serenity – catering for a more relaxed and calmer crowd than the usual seaside campers. Peace and quiet reign. There is the odd exception to the rule; the working smallholding next door supplies the sound of the odd tractor or cockerel crow but it only adds to the real-world charisma of the place, which is otherwise blessed with snooze-in-the-sun tranquility for most of the time.

The site itself has space for 40 tents and 19 caravans. Glampers, meanwhile, can choose from a cool Lotus Belle tent, a new, boutique shepherd’s hut or the private ‘Potting Shed’, a large wooden cabin sleeping two with a private garden and uninterrupted sunset views. Warm, modern facilities feature alongside eco-friendly products, potted plants and a steady supply of fresh eggs from wandering hens. While a seat next to the pretty wildlife pond is perfect for whiling away the hours feeding the ducks and ducklings who visit every summer.

A number of the best local walks start directly from the campsite and it’s less than a mile to the sands of Runswick Bay. A particular highlight is heading out to the cliffs on the coastal footpath to Whitby – a wind-blown eight-mile route with stunning views. It’s a mile north along the Cleveland Way to picturesque Staithes, too, home to a thriving artistic community with several galleries and craft shops. The village boasts seafaring myth, triumph, tragedy and even its own dialect – which is celebrated at the annual Staithes Arts and Heritage festival in September and all year round at the quirky Captain Cook and Staithes Heritage Museum. It’s also the most unbeatable spot for enjoying seafood with the obligatory harbour view – try the Cod & Lobster pub, with benches outside.

Nearby

There are a number of beautiful walks that can be accessed directly from site – choose from the cliff-top routes or venture into the neighbouring oak woodland. Runswick Bay, a beautiful beach, is 1 mile from the campsite. The beach is dog friendly and has a good café selling ice cream, as well as buckets, spades and all the usual beach gear. Or head to the picturesque village of Staithes, with a number of cafes and restaurants, as well as a small heritage museum (01947 841454) and a vintage shop and gallery (01947 841096). A little further afield is Grosmont where you'll find the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway (01751 472508). Ride to Pickering stopping at the old stations along the way – you may recognise Goathland as Hogsmeade station from the Harry Potter films. Whitby, too, is a short drive away and makes for a perfect day trip. Be sure to climb the 199 steps to visit famous Whitby Abbey (01947 603568).

Food & Drink

R Lyth & Son (01947 840288), the local butcher, can supply you with BBQ packs, pies and breakfast rolls and the Post Office (01947 840242) sells all the basics like bread and milk, both are just a hundred yards from the site entrance. The Runcible Spoon (01947 840700) is a great bistro right next to the campsite, serving coffee, cake and lunch by day and evening meals over the weekend, sometimes accompanied by live music. For a dog-friendly choice, try The Badger Hounds (01947 841774) for hearty evening meals and a fine selection of beer and wine – we recommend that you make a booking as it does get quite busy. The Cod and Lobster (01947 840330) is the place to go for seafood, overlooking the bay in Staithes.

Lovely

This was our second time here. We have stayed in the bell tent and the shepherds hut and love both. The owners are very helpful and friendly and nothing seems to be too much bother. There is a bus outside the campsite to Whitby or you can walk to Runswick bay. There is a pub across from the campsite which is handy ! Wondering what we can try next on the site ! Cant wait to go back!

Relaxation

Myself and my new wife spent two nights in the Shepherds Hut and it was brilliant. Such a beautiful and well located campsite. The facilities are extremely clean and the staff most welcoming and helpful. The bottle of prosecco for being newly wed was a lovely touch. A shame that the pub across the road was closed at the time but there is a lovely cafe next door that do great breakfasts and a wide ranging drinks menu.

Beautiful campsite

A gorgeous campsite in a sweet village just off the Cleveland Way. The owners have thought of everything to make the bell tents and the site in general really lovely - from pretty vases of fresh flowers to music in the shower block to the wifi and information hut. The only thing I would change would be an additional toilet block closer to the bell tents and the bottom camping field. On the whole, though, a lovely place and we'll definitely be back!

So Peaceful

I have been trying to get my wife to go camping for the last 14 year's, so this was a big test. Despite the weather (gusty winds and/or rain for the biggest part), she loved it - excellent facilities and very clean and so peaceful. Thank you so much for the wonderful stay - cannot wait to see you again soon.

Fabulous Glamping Experience

We have stayed at Serenity many times over several years taking our own tent; the facilities are the best I've used in x (cough) number of years of camping! We decided to try out one glamping and stayed in the large bell tent. I cannot praise it enough, equipped with everything you could need and obviously the same lovely owners to greet us when we arrived, recognising my boyfriend from the last visit 2 yrs ago. The location of the bell tents with their own garden area is brilliant. We will obviously continue to stay at this site and will no doubt glamp again. The location of the camp site is excellent; 2 pubs, chippy and bistro within a couple of mins walk. We ate at the Runcible Spoon (bistro) and the Brown Cow pub - both serving excellent food and the music in the Spoon was right up my street!

A lovely place to stay

We spent the bank holiday weekend staying in the Bell Tent and had a wonderful time! The tent itself was delightful (complete with fresh flowers) and the site and facilities were top notch (great attention to detail). We'll definitely be back! :)

Great Site

Just wanted to say thank you for a relaxing weekend in your bell tent. We were so impressed with the site, friendly staff and clean facilities. It was so peaceful with loads of places to eat and drink within walking nearby.

We'll definitely be back soon.
