NearbyWhen you fancy forgetting about fishing, the nearby market towns of Northallerton and Richmond will do the trick – mixtures of quaint old centres with more modern outskirts. In Northallerton the long High Street provides a wide variety of shops, pubs and cafes. Best to go on market days, though – Wednesdays and Saturdays – when there is more of a buzz to the place. From here continue a few miles on the A684 and you reach theNorth York Moors National Park (01439 772700) – home to a plethora of outdoor activities. Osmotherley, on the park's western edge, is an excellent starting point. The 110 mile Cleveland Way National Trail runs through the village, and can be joined to walk a small section, or try the Lyke Wake Walk – the official starting point is at the edge of the moors above the village, where there is an official stone marker. For a little history the Wensleydale Railway (01677 425805) is also a must-visit. Largely run by volunteers, there are currently six stations on the line with steam trains running every weekend.
Food & DrinkThere are 2 lovely country pubs within walking distance. The Black Horse (01609749010), a mile and a half to the north, and The Coore Arms (01609 748215), just over a mile to the south. Both serve homemade, traditional pub fare all day, with the Black Horse adding a slightly more modern, gastro pub twist.
