A North Yorkshire glamping site with superb fishing on offer from right outside your tent flaps

Camping and fishing go together like hand in glove. Nothing beats a night under canvas snoozing beneath the stars until dawn appears, calling your cue to crawl from the sleeping bag and cast the very first line across the lake. Sometimes, though, the dream is a little different from reality. You tackle with the fishing tackle, wrestle with your guy ropes and wake to find the sun climbing hurriedly into the sky. A small crowd of fellow fishermen have already encircled the water. Things never go quite as you first planned.

Stonebridge Fishing Lakes, however, seems to be the pleasing answer to these regular fishing woes. With complimentary lakeside fishing and a pre-pitched tent that’s closer to a small outdoor hotel suite then the old canvas you’ve got at home, a few nights here push reality far closer to the countryside getaway of your dreams.

Plotted in a meadowy space adjacent to the fishery’s caravanning area – so those determined for the old school methods are still welcome to tag along – Stonebridge's pre-pitched offerings are found nestled on the shores of the fishing lake.

Down by the lake, three bell tents also stand out against the greens of the surrounding foliage. Raised on wooden decking, that ensures a level surface as well as an excellent view of the water, each are kitted inside in a similar style. Double beds await, with a sofa bed for extra guests, and old-style lanterns perch on wooden bedside tables. A healthy scattering of bunting adds to the thoroughly English feel of it all too, while furniture out on the deck allows you to make the most of long summer evenings – English weather and all.  Added to that, a further larger tent – with two comfortable double beds but not set on decking – is found on the other side of the lake.

Facilities-wise, there are toilets, showers and each pitch has its own individual outdoor kitchen, compete with all the pots, pans and caboodle you'll need. A firepit is ideal for warm evening barbecues but for a quick starter there is also an excellent cooking stove, for a more speedy, practical meal.

You don’t have to be Freddie Fisherman to come glamping here though. An onsite angling shop means you can buy a rod and gear if you don’t have your own, or, of course, you can simply enjoy the pleasant waterside setting and spend your days exploring the surrounding area instead. It’s a 25-minute drive east to the North York Moors National Park, a hiker's paradise, and a similar length to the Yorkshire Dales in the west. Or you can stay and take on the local footpaths that head directly from Stonebridge Fishing Lakes – the best leading you a mile and a half to The Black Horse Pub… you won’t want to go any further than that!

Crockery and cooking utensils are also all provided, as is a starter pack for the BBQ and fire (if your stay is for 2 nights or more). There's a toilet and shower block onsite. All units sleep up to 3 to 4 adults with either a double bed and a small fold down sofa bed or two double beds.

Campervans, caravans, glampers, families, couples, well-behaved groups, fishermen and fisherwomen. Please note children under the age of 8 are not allowed to stay in the glamping units. Dogs can be booked into the Rainbow and Brown Trout Bell Tents.

When you fancy forgetting about fishing, the nearby market towns of Northallerton and Richmond will do the trick – mixtures of quaint old centres with more modern outskirts. In Northallerton the long High Street provides a wide variety of shops, pubs and cafes. Best to go on market days, though – Wednesdays and Saturdays – when there is more of a buzz to the place. From here continue a few miles on the A684 and you reach theNorth York Moors National Park (01439 772700) – home to a plethora of outdoor activities. Osmotherley, on the park's western edge, is an excellent starting point. The 110 mile Cleveland Way National Trail runs through the village, and can be joined to walk a small section, or try the Lyke Wake Walk – the official starting point is at the edge of the moors above the village, where there is an official stone marker. For a little history the Wensleydale Railway (01677 425805) is also a must-visit. Largely run by volunteers, there are currently six stations on the line with steam trains running every weekend.

Food & Drink

There are 2 lovely country pubs within walking distance. The Black Horse (01609749010), a mile and a half to the north, and The Coore Arms (01609 748215), just over a mile to the south. Both serve homemade, traditional pub fare all day, with the Black Horse adding a slightly more modern, gastro pub twist.

Great fishing break

Great place, Fishing close to the campsite, Friendly really helpful owners, Beautiful surroundings, REALLY GREAT value for money.

Great friendly place in a lovely rural setting

I went for the fishing and the lake was perfect with a good stock of sizeable fish. There is a well stocked little tackle shop and lots of good advice. Whilst there, I had difficulties that needed the dog to be taken to the vet. The owners (and regular campers) could not have been more helpful. I am deeply grateful for their help and support. If you want a great place for some quiet fishing with a friendly welcome and two good pubs in walking distance then this is the place for you!

Great stay

Lovely little place to stay! It rained for our stay but the outdoor glamping areas were great and kept us dry! Nice place for kids as they have chickens and ducks running around
