The Hideaway at Baxby Manor

UK England North East England North Yorkshire

Baxby Manor, Low St, Husthwaite, York YO61 4PW
Church spires, campfires and local food suppliers – proper camping.
There’s many a way to toast a marshmallow. Some give it a brief hazing over the flames, warming it to a pleasant softness but never daring risk its skin. Others plunge it headlong into the furnace, blackening the outer shell like an overcooked roast potato but bubbling the inners to a sweet and sticky goo.

We all have different tastes and, provided you adhere to the general ethos of loving the great outdoors, The Hideaway at Baxby Manor is the kind of site that caters for every appetite. True their ‘no noise after 11’ policy means party animals aren’t welcome and the narrow entrance lane keeps the big-boy motorhomes away but for everyone else this is a real camping playground. Families lazing by the campfire, cyclists retracing Le Grand Depart, walkers enjoying the space of the countryside and history buffs nipping across to the old centre of York – it's got the full range of flavours.

Set in the grounds of 14th-century Baxby Manor on the edge of quaint Husthwaite village, this is a hideaway worthy of its name. Approached down a single lane track with trees on either side, the six acre meadow is home to just 40 grassy pitches, each with a firepit and all spread evenly around. In the centre of the site, opposite a young but flourishing orchard, is the main facilities and reception building. The timber structure is home to all ablutions and a handy shop selling the all important marshmallows, while some days of the year friendly local, Emma, tows in her trusty retro caravan 'Liza-Jane' to sell home baked goods from it’s doorstep.

On the south east edge of the campsite Ings Beck quietly flows, though the flank of trees on the river bank mean it acts more as a natural fence than a focal feature of camping here. If you do fancy pitching on it’s edge its best to book early, since that side of the campsite is where The Hideaway’s glamping accommodation is found. Those travelling light will love the luxury under-canvas layout of their bell tents, furnished with proper double beds, lanterns, cooking wares, a kettle and wooden outdoor furniture. They also have more permanent looking eco-pods – something akin to a hobbit’s Yorkshire holiday home – with futon-style beds inside the hexagonal wooden walls. All of it falls thoughtfully within their green criteria. Since the year it opened The Hideaway at Baxby Manor has consistently received awards for its eco credentials and it’s easy to see why. By the time you leave, though, the greenest thing is your own unquenchable envy, jealous of all the other campers who aren’t yet heading home.

We are a small, relaxed and friendly campsite with proper campfires on every pitch, situated in the heart of North Yorkshire we can offer you chilled out camping and glamping that's in-tune with nature and doesn't cost the Earth. There are just 40 pitches in a 6 acre field, which nestles in the midst of our 110 acre farm, surrounded by trees and bounded on one side by a stream. It is off the beaten track, but only a stroll from the village shop, pub and bus stop.

The Hideaway@Baxby Manor is a special, peaceful and restful place where you can spend precious days away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I loved it at Baxby Manor

Oct 7, 2016 by Sara

I loved the eco-friendly approach, the kindness of the staff, the fact that I was allowed to have a fire and cooking equipment could be hired. The toilet block and washing/drying facilities were spotless. I intended to stay one night and stayed four!

Best Campsite by Far

Jun 8, 2016 by Andy

This place is awesome, beautiful, peaceful, and great has facilities

The site isn't huge, but it is well laid out and the pitch could have easily taken my little tent 6 times

The facilities way exceeded our expectations, all I ask for are clean bathrooms and hot showers, but these were fantastic. We did not expect a shared fridge and freezer, free wifi, and a drying room

We loved the fire pit, the shop is small but has everything you need, plus very tasty local cider

Sadly the caravan / coffee shop wasn't open, as it was off season, but no problem, the peace and quiet and pretty surroundings more than made up for it

Congratulations to Barney, this has to be one of the finest campsites we've visited, thanks  a million

my wife and i, have just come back from the hideaway after a long weekend away for ourselves without the kids, our first night we were`nt that impressed if i`m honest as there was a lot of kids playing loudly at the back of our pitch but after a polite word with them they moved back to playing on there own pitch.as nearly every other review the facilities are great  and the staff are really friendly and theirs nothing better after a long walk with the dog but to put your feet up by an open fire open a bottle of wine and relax under the stars.absolutely bliss and the weather was lovely aswell

Wow - Great find!

Jun 8, 2015 by Phil & Michelle

What a fantastic site. We have visited before and stayed in the eco cabins which were great. This time we spent an excellent week at May Bank Holiday in our rather large tent - plenty of room on the pitch.

nature becomes children's playground - my 8 year old had plenty of freedom without needing to roam too far from us. The toilet and wash facilities are so clean - even when raining thanks to some thoughtful overshoes.

There is a well stocked shop (including great local cider)  and always a friendly welcome. The fire pits and grills make outdoor living a fantastic experience.

A peaceful camp site set in some beautiful scenery with great opportunities to explore from the campsite either running, walking or cycling - and 2 excellent pubs close at hand. We will be back !!

Wonderful site

Jun 4, 2015 by Jane

We had a wonderful stay over the late May bank holiday and we really loved it.  We had 3 tents and we were lucky enough to have 3 great pitches next to each other.  The pitches are large, and the space is made even better because you do not bring your car onto the camp fields(the wheelbarrows that are on hand to help transport your gear to your pitch are a great touch)

There's a lovely friendly feel to the site and the facilities are excellent and very clean.  We loved the special touches like the fire pits, the fabulous butcher who comes on Saturday morning, and the lovely caravan serving coffee, croissants and cakes.

We took our own tent but the bell tents and Eco pods also look a great option to avoid the pitching arguments, although our friends erected our tent before we arrived so I can't complain (thanks H&M)

We will be back.

We love it.... And Barney!

Jun 3, 2015 by Dglw1809

We stayed over the weekend, and although the weather was 'changeable' all in our party loved it. Even before we were pitched, the kids went off to play, they have so much freedom, but are safe.

Barney cannot do enough for you, wether it's undelivered shopping, or 7 kids brandishing 20p's and delving into the shop to buy sweets!

The vintage caravan was an absolute delight in the mornings (as was the proprietor!) beautiful coffee, and delicious home made cakes.

I have already recommended the site to 3 of my friends, and will continue to recommend it too.

We've already booked our next trip  😀

excellent weekend

Jun 2, 2015 by nicola

We spent a weekend camping with family at the hideaway. Barney was really helpful in ensuring we could be on pitches next to each other. The whole site it really well kept. While I was initially shocked at the long grass I quickly realised how well it worked, not only for wildlife, but to section off areas and allow each family private space. The facilities were the best I have seen; lovely well designed bathrooms, access to fridges and freezers, an area for drying towels/clothes and lots of sink space for washing up. All communal areas were kept very clean at all times. The fire pits are great, allowing the camping tradition of open fires when many other campsites do not allow this. The visiting butcher on a Saturday morning is also a great idea. A very well thought out, and well run campsite. We will be visiting again sometime soon!!

Perfect.

We stayed here for the first time during half term with our two children upon a recommendation from a friend.  From our arrival along the rambling lane to the site, I fell in love. It reminded me of one those sweet little gems of a site that you accidentally come across in the South of France and never want to leave.

The site is peaceful and very spacious. We had a larger pitch around the large central grassy area and thought this was just so lovely. We really appreciated that the owners haven't been greedy and tried to 'cram' as many pitches as possible onto a  piece of land for money making purposes. We LOVED the space.

The children enjoyed riding their bikes, playing on the swing in the trees(until a grumpy camper cut it down :( ) and joining in with the communal games on an evening.

We cant wait to go back -  you could be anywhere in the world .

Thanks Barney (and staff)! Keep up the good work!

P.S The cider is just great and Liza Janes a wonderful special addition that must never leave !!!!! The fresh coffee and pastries added taste and glamour to the camping lifestyle! Thanks Emma!

Wish I could give more than 5 stars..

Jun 2, 2015 by The Coopers

The Hideaway at Baxby Manor is by far the best campsite we have stayed at. The location is absolutely beautiful. A real little hideaway and promotes exactly what the owners say, a peaceful and relaxing stay. All pitches are nice and big, great space between and each one has its own fire pit! Perfect! The facilities are excellent, lots of toilets and showers, a potwash and a drying room. Little added extras such as a book swap, butchers and mobile coffee van just add to how great this campsite already is. There is a shop onsite where you can buy pretty much anything you need for camping along with firewood and grills if you want to cook over the fire. Barney, the owner, is possibly the nicest man we have ever met. So welcoming and chatty. We have been here twice and already booking our third visit within 3 months. It really is wonderful

Coming home

Jun 2, 2015 by Jmck

I love this campsite, I really do. I love pretty much everything about it. The ease of getting there. (For us, just over an hour). The size of the site, big enough for the kids to feel like they can have real adventures, but small enough that I don't worry too much about where they can get to. I love the cleanliness of the site and its amenities. I love the meat van that comes on a Saturday and the gorgeous Caravan with posh coffee and cakes. But most of all I love that coming to 'Barney's place' feels like coming home. We have been coming every half term for the last three years. The kids feel confident and familiar with it and that makes for a stress free break. As a group we can come to Barney's and pretty much not leave the site the whole time but yet still, we feel like we have had a real holiday. I want to tell everyone I know about how fab Baxby is, but don't want to make it so that I can't get a pitch next half term. So please go, but shhhhh, don't tell too many people.

best English campsite

Jun 2, 2015 by podaibooo

Baxby manor campsite is by far one of the best, if not THE best campsite in England....and ive been to a fair few. I cant understand how anyone can say the pitches are cramped, we had a very large 8 man tunnel tent with huge porch, on an electric pitch and we still had a load more space.

The safety of not having cars on the grass is brilliant, so i felt totally relaxed to allow my children to play out even at night. The areas surrounding the pitches, ie long grass, are great places for young kids to learn about insects....take insect pod with you to magnify them!

It was freezing when we went in May half term, but thankfully discovered the drying room, sauna for towels, and cold people!!! There was fridges n freezers which are great for storing all your frozen and chilled foods. Top spec toilets and facilities.

The only downside for me, but had nothing to do with Baxby itself, was it chucked it down on the day we packed up the tent....but everyone should expect pants weather in England.....joys of camping!

One last thing, there is abosultly loads to do for family days out in the area.

Fab Site

Jun 2, 2015 by Clare

We had a great time. Our second visit to the hideaway. The campsite itself is amazing, very eco friendly, Showers are hot and very clean including toilets! Barney is friendly and helpful with everything (My Car had broken and needed a mechanic) The site was full when we arrived, last time we came it was very quiet with only a few campers there. lots of space for out tent and in the evening round the camp fire toasting marshmallows and smores. we will defiantly be coming back, its great for the novice camper and also the more experienced.

Excellent

Jun 2, 2015 by Elaine Elliott

An excellent campsite, one of the best we've stayed at. Everything was so well thought out. Big spacious pitches, lovely and clean shower and toilet block, campsite had a lovely atmosphere about it, and the vintage caravan selling fancy teas and coffees and cakes brilliant. Nice surrounding area too, Husthwaite and Coxwold both lovely. Was hoping to go back in August but it's busy, the pitch we wanted has gone which isn't surprising, but we're hoping to go back next year :)

cramped pitches

May 23, 2015 by kirsten

We didn't like this campsite at all. The way it was set out with the pitches around an area in the middle that has been left to grow and you were asked not to walk through it. This meant that the pitches were cramped and left you with no choice except to walk across other peoples pitches to reach the toilets, it also meant there was no room for children to play. To me It felt as though they were only interested in wedding hire and didn't care about normal campers. The toilets were spotless but it didn't make up for what it lacked elsewhere.

Response from owner:

Thank you for your feedback Kirsten.
The long grass in the centre and around pitches is left to grow as this encourages wildflowers and wildlife such as field mice and bees, many campsites have manicured lawns and this doesn’t fit in with our Back to Nature Eco ethos. David Bellamy himself also encourages us NOT to cut these areas for these reasons. The longer grass also provides a sense of privacy and having your own space, our smallest pitch is 8x5 meters and the largest ones are 12x10 meters. Everyone can walk through the long grass if they so wish, the children love playing lions and tigers in it! We do ask people not to walk over the wildflower banks though, for obvious reasons. We have in the last couple of years created a few small discrete pathways from the more secluded camping pitches to the car parking areas and the facilities.
I am not sure when you stayed with us as we have had no weddings here this year but we keep the numbers of weddings to just 5 per year because after all we are a campsite, not a wedding venue. We just like to be able to offer a few lucky couples the experience of getting married in such a beautiful secluded location.

A Stunning well run site that you'll return to again and again

Apr 15, 2015 by krystan

Where to start.

I have been to this site on a few occasions, I have stayed in a wooden eco pod, in the bell tents and I've camped under canvas there. On all occasions I've had a great time. The site is well run by Barney the proprietor and the toilet and shower facilities are cleaned to a very high standard in the morning. There are good wash up facilities a set of freezers for cool packs and a drying room to dry out those clothes if they are wet. There is a curfew in place on this site which is enforced. There are signs which indicate this and if you do make a bit too much noise you can expect a visit from barney to explain again to please keep it down a bit.

The fire pits are great fun and there is a butcher that arrives on saturdays who sells very high quality produce, with my favourite being the huge steaks which we then cook over the fire pits on the grills we rented from the on site shop.

I have been here in all weathers and never had a bad time its great for kids and is a very pretty site due to the wild flowers that they encourage to go. I cannot think of a single negative thing to say about this place. I will return again and again.

Fantastic Site

Apr 15, 2015 by Bryn Jackson

Have stayed with the family and friends 4/5 times over the past 2 years and just keep wanting to go back. Tent pitches are generous and well spaced out giving a great feeling of privacy, each with its own fire pit and you can hire a grill to cook over which is great. We have tried out there Eco Pod for 2 Adults and 2 Children, very comfy and lost of space. We will be back on May this year then taking our first visit to the Baxbyfest in September that we are really looking forward to and will be trying out one of Barneys Bell tents. Toilets are exceptionally clean and well maintained and Barney the owner always goes out of his way to make each stay a memorable one.
