Relaxing adult-only, dog-friendly glamping stays with private bathrooms and a view of the Yorkshire Wolds.

There’s little drama in the Yorkshire Wolds, where a crescent of chalk hills arcs from the east coast of “God’s Own Country”. It’s a place for pleasant walking in rolling countryside or on long sandy beaches, for visiting genteel seaside resorts and mooching about in sleepy villages. It’s on the edge of one of these, in a place called Wold Newton, that you’ll find Wold Meadow, a glamping site that’s just for grown-ups with an emphasis on relaxing stays.

The site’s six yurts, each with a private hot tub, offer the ultimate places to unwind but there are a couple of other accommodation options to choose from, too. An off-grid star-gazing bell tent provides something closer to camping and a stationary VW campervan with awning is parked up, ready to move into. Whichever you choose, you’ll find the beds are made and that towels, toiletries and robes are provided for you. Each has its own facilities: lovely indoor shower rooms for the yurts and more rustic outdoorsy equivalents for the bell tent and campervan.

All this sits in a two-acre meadow, sheltered on three sides by hedges and open to long views across rolling fields on the fourth. It’s rather a nice scene to enjoy as you cook your dinner on the provided barbecue, warm your toes by the campfire or sink into a bubbling hot tub. The place is tended to by Jayne and Graham who’ll welcome you to site, settle you in and make sure you have everything you need. This can-do pair ran a large caravan site and holiday homes for years so little can faze them and they know the area as well as anyone.

If you fancy a pint in the village pub, they’ll point you in the right direction, if you want somewhere to walk the dog (they are welcome here) they'll tell you where to go. If it's a longer walk you're after they might explain how to get to the Yorkshire Wolds Way. It’s activities like these along with strolls on long sandy beaches, discovering stately homes and visits to seaside Filey that’ll keep you busy here. All grown-up days out for a grown-up getaway where the most dramatic thing you’re likely to encounter is the way the chalky wolds plunge into the sea at nearby Flamborough Head.

Facilities

The six yurts are each furnished with a kingsize bed loaded with soft pillows, bedding, fluffy towels and bathrobes. There's a log burner and an electricity supply as well as a kettle, toaster, cool box and tableware. Outside each has a patio area with a fire pit, barbecue and table and chairs, as well as its own hot tub. There's a lockable shower room for each yurt with a toilet, sink and toiletries supplied in an amenity block 100 metres from the furthest yurt. The star-gazing bell tent is similarly furnished but does not have a hot tub, log burner or an electricity supply. It has a composting toilet and a more rustic outdoor shower and hand basin just outside the tent. Bertie, the stationary VW camper van, has the same. The van has electric hook-up and includes a gas hob (two rings), sink, kettle, microwave, along with pans and utensils. There is also a spacious seating area and outside folding tables and chairs. The site also has a communal-use undercover but outdoor kitchen area with a gas stove, double oven and fridge/freezer.

Suitable For

Glamping adults and their dogs – yes. Campervans, caravans, motorhomes, kids – no.

Nearby

The site is on the edge of the attractive village of Newton Wold where there is a pub, a village green, duck pond and the starting point for a few local walks. For a longer hike through the wolds, you could join National Trail the Yorkshire Wolds Way, a few miles north of the site. It's about eight miles to the seaside at Filey with the bigger seaside resorts of Scarborough and Bridlington just over 10 miles north and south and the wilder beaches and vast sands of Hunmanby Gap and Reighton in between. Wildlife lovers and birdwatchers won't want to miss the seabird colonies at Bempton Cliffs RSPB Reserve (01262 422212) and Flamborough Head, 12 miles from site, on the spectacular chalk cliffs. There are plenty of grand houses and gardens to explore within 15 miles of site including Burton Agnes Hall (01262 490324), Sledmore House (01377 236637) and Sewerby Hall (01262 673769).

Food & Drink

You can pre-order breakfast boxes, BBQ packs, afternoon teas and packed lunches to be delivered to your accommodation when you book your stay. For a drink or meal out, head half a mile up the road to the village and The Anvil Arms pub (01262 470279). Or, for more options, drive 10 minutes to Hunmanby for a meal at The Horseshoe Inn (01723 890077), The White Swan (01723 890232) or The Piebald Inn (01723 447577) which specialises in handmade pies. The menu has to be seen to be believed. You can also pick up supplies from delicatessen The Hunmanby Pantry or the Co-Op supermarket.

Getting There

The site is two miles off the B1249 which runs north/south from the A166 (York to Bridlington road) and the A64 (Leeds to Scarborough road). As you approach Foxholes from the south or just leaving it from the north there is a crossroads. Turn off to Wold Newton and travel two miles into centre of the village just past the duck pond and then turn right at pub on to Rainsburgh Lane. After 200 metres, round the sharp right over a bridge, and another 50 metres take a sharp left. The site is 50 metres past this on the right.  The nearest train station is Filey, eight miles away, but your hosts recommend coming by car to be able to explore the area.
