Scenic, simple glamping pods set beside a welcoming Pennines pub
Head out back at The Moorcock Inn in Teesdale and you’re guaranteed to see Red Grouse, Black Grouse, Pheasant and Snipe. We’re talking, of course, about the neat little glamping pods that have sprung up in the backyard – not the moorland birds they’re named after. We can’t quite guarantee sightings of those, though if you pull on your walking boots and head out into the surrounding fells there’s a pretty good chance that they’ll be springing up too.
There are 12 pods in all at Hill Top Huts, with the likes of Dales Pony, Highland and Beef Shorthorn completing the roll call. More than just a nod to the area’s animals, the names link this new glamping site with its owners, the Souters, who have farmed the area for more than 30 years. And best of all, the meat from their award-wining cattle (the Beef Shorthorn) is available on the mouthwatering menu at The Moorcock Inn. The food miles are low with just three miles separating pasture from pub (and pods) or ‘from gate to plate’, as the Souters like to say.
The pleasing green credentials aren’t the only thing that help you rest easy here. The pods have comfy fixed beds, a solid roof and an electricity supply while there’s a kettle, lights and plug sockets should you require them. It’s camping for glampers, and glamping for campers. Perfect for those who love the great outdoors but find little joy in the pitching of tents, inflating of air beds and the slow boiling of kettles on wobbly camp stoves. If you like the self-catering side of camp life, you can pick up some of that locally-reared meat to barbecue from the on-site shop but, of course, a hearty pub dinner is only ever a few steps away.
It’s easy to keep it local in other ways too. These well-named Hill Top Huts offer panoramic views and great walking with both the Teesdale and Pennine Ways not far from site. The pub and its pods sit within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and, one of the area’s must-see sights, High Force – England’s biggest waterfall – is just seven miles away. And, as it’s located on the road linking the riverside market towns of Middleton-in-Teesdale and Barnard Castle, it’s also a great base from which to discover both.
There’s an undercover washing-up area and laundry area as well as 7 toilets and 5 showers - including an accessible wet room, toilet and baby change. The pods come in three different sizes, sleeping between 3 and 5 people each. 2 pods are wheelchair accessible. All of the pods have electric hook-up for lights and power sockets and are kitted out with a small fridge, kettle, microwave and toaster. They have fixed and folding beds. Outside each pod is a little decked area with a canopy/porch area and a boot box. There’s also a picnic table and a paving slab where guests can use disposable BBQs - available to buy from the on-site shop. Bedding, crockery and cutlery are available to hire on request -at an extra cost. There’s free WiFi throughout site. Campfires are not allowed.
Glamping only. Couples, families, groups and dogs all welcome.
The village playground, Eggleston Play Park, is just 200-metres away and will keep younger kids happy with its zip wires, swings and slides. For longer walks, you’re spoilt for choice. The Teesdale Way passes close by the site and offers a route down to the river. The site is also only about 4 miles from the Pennine Way – with Middleton-in-Teesdale a handy place to join it. The site is surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Beauty and it’s about 7 miles to the Bowlees Visitor Centre (01833 622145) where you can find out about the area or set off on a walk to England’s biggest waterfall, High Force (01833 622336) its little sister, Low Force, or to the Moorhouse Nature Reserve (01833 622374). The historic market town of Barnard Castle, named after the 12th century fortress (01833 638212) at its heart is also about 7 miles from site. As well as the castle, the town is home to the Bowes Museum (01833 690606) and lots of independent shops and eateries. Another popular place to visit is Hamsterley Forest - famous for its walking, mountain biking and Gruffalo trails.

Our second time staying here and it did not disappoint. We ate in the pub this time round and the food was fantastic at a great price. Great location, pods are basic as you’d expect but have kettle, fridge, toaster and kettle. Shower and toilet facilities are great and constantly clean. We can’t wait to visit again!!!!
Fantastic value, wonderful location and accomodation
We have just returned from a long bank holiday weekend and were very impressed with the lay out of the pods in terms of space inside and out and in the facilities. Everything was spotlessly clean and regular cleaning was evident in the toilet and shower areas throughout the day. The food at the Moorcock was delicious and substantial. The regulars to the pub and the fellow holidaymakers were all friendly and respectful of noise and litter. The location is central and close to numerous places of interest. We visited the local gardens, high force waterfalls, Barnard castle and Hamsterly forrest, all of which we can highly recommend. We were very lucky with the weather while we were there but I think even in cloudy days the views and scenery surrounding the countryside would still be spectacular. Great place and fab service. Thanks for a wonderful time.
A fabulous camping alternative in a beautiful location
We were two families of 4 staying in a 4 and 5 berth pod with a dog and both pods were spotlessly clean, well equipped and spacious. The booking and payment process had been smooth and we were welcomed at arrival and felt we were looked after during our stay. With mixed weather we were grateful of the sturdy structure, though the children loved the quirkiness and the location was brilliant with lots of walking enjoyed and beautiful waterfalls on the doorstep. Whilst some of the local attractions still weren't open due to Covid 19 it is well worth a visit to High Force and it was easy to get up to Hadrian's Wall and across to the Yorkshire Dales as well as undertaking lots of local walks so it is well sited. The shared facilities were extremely clean and whilst Covid 19 had meant the little shop was closed, there was the option to order breakfast / BBQ items and the food in the Moorcock Inn was great. The site seemed fully booked during our stay but it was never noisy and there was a friendly feel to the layout. Easy to find and get to, we will definitely return as we had great fun!
A lovely short stay
I stayed at Hill Top Huts with my boyfriend for 2 nights, we booked for a short last minute break. The site is lovely - beautifully presented and in a great location that's convenient for local attractions. We visited Barnard Castle as well as High Force during our stay. The campsite facilities are great and we were really impressed by the toilet and shower block, which was kept immaculate. We stayed in one of the smallest pods and it was great for what we needed, compact but with a good sized table, outdoor seating & BBQ area and kettle, microwave, toaster and small fridge. We struggled with the bed a little, ours was a fold down table that converted into a double which meant that it was rather hard and uncomfortable to lie on. We had an airbed with us just in case so used that on our second night. Unfortunately the pub was fully booked when we visited due to the eat out to help out scheme, but it's very handy to have it there and we'd love to try the food next time. If you're looking for an alternative, I'd highly recommend Indian restaurant Babul's in Barnard Castle as we had beautiful food and great service there. Thanks Hill Top Huts, despite the weather we had a great stay and would definitely come back!
We booked for a two night stay . The shared facilities were spotless and the showers were lovely and hot . The pub offered excellent food . The hosts were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble . The huts were clean and cosy with a heater if needed . We had to cut our stay short due to a family illness but we will be going back . Excellent value for money .
Couldn’t have been any better, excellent facilities, thoroughly recommend.
Our stay at Hill Top Huts couldn’t have been any better. The campsite was in a great location for days out and it offered excellent facilities for both families and couples. The shower and toilet block was extremely clean and well kept. Regular cleaning sessions had been put in place due to Covid-19 and despite Covid-19, the campsite felt a safe place to be, with it being easy to social distance from other people staying at Hill Top Huts. The Huts themselves are extremely well built and are very accommodating for families with both younger and older children. The huts were great as they offered a heater, microwave, a small fridge and shelf storage. The campsite also offered BBQ space outside each hut and a small car park was also located next to the huts. Free Wi-Fi was available and the Moorcock Inn pub offered great service and food throughout our stay. We will most definitely be returning.
Intend to return .
Perfect pods in every way, Site well set out, excellent shared facilities which felt very safe to use. Pub onsite very friendly With extensive menu and food well cooked. Location super for walking the Tees rail trail and other lovely walks. Eggleston gardens just a short walk away . So much to explore in this area
Fab little site, perfect base to explore Teesdale
Spent a lovely few days at Hill Top Huts - really lovely little site. Immaculately clean, great shower and toilet block which was deep cleaned three times a day, was always clean whenever we visited. We booked one of the smaller pods - very cosy and cute, seating area turns into a small double which was fine for me and my 8 yr old son - if I came with my partner, I think I'd book one of the bigger ones with a proper bed and a thicker mattress but the one we had was perfect for 4 nights. Plenty of electrical sockets, was always nice and warm, little fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave meant we didn't have to bring any cooking equipment. Each pod has its own picnic bench outside so we didn't even need to bring chairs meaning it's great for a last minute break as you don't need to bring a car full of gear. Location was fab, not too far from pretty Barnard Castle and Bowes Museum, even closer was Middleton in Teesdale and High Force waterfall. Best thing about the area was the views - absolutely stunning everywhere you went. Not far from the Pennine Way so good for avid walkers. We walked up the hill behind the site and ended up on Eggleston Moor which was a lovely little hike. We only used the pub on site once but it was really nice, very friendly and a good selection of food and drink.
Fantastic stay in lovely accomodation
What a great place to stay. The pods are spacious and spotless. The area has lovely views of the North Pennines, excellent for walking. Facilities are perfect, plenty of water points and the showers and bathrooms are spotless. Shower isn't very powerful but that is expected in this type of shared facilities. The Moorcock Inn is dog friendly and food is delicious. There is a play park in Eggleston you can walk to but it is a bank to get walk down/back if you have mobility issues. The park is fantastic my 8 year old loved it. Nice and near Barnard Castle and I would recommend driving to Bowless Visitor Centre and checking out Low and High force waterfalls. What a wonderful site staff very friendly and helpful. Great for social distancing and only a few pods in site. The shop was shut which was the only disappointment but this was due to covid so can't really be helped.
Fabulous Family Glamping
We have just arrived back from our trip away staying at Hill Top Huts. The pods are amazing - clean, cosy and with everything you might need for a glamping trip away. All the amenities are well looked after and very close. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. We even stayed an extra night at their pub on site The Moorcock Inn as we didn’t want to leave! We will definitely return. Thanks Joanne and your team! p.s. the food at the pub is so good. We’d definitely recommend you book to eat there during your stay.
We stayed here as a family of 3 in August. The site is beautifully located with fantastic views and fortunately for us amazing weather. The pods are spacious and reasonably well equipped, extremely clean and very well insulated with a lovely outdoor seating area. Only downside was the fridge which was not really big enough or cold enough for a four day stay by day 3 our milk was solid 😩 The site also has communal toilet, shower and washing facilities as well as an on site pub/restaurant great for a relaxing drink/meal after a days walking and exploring. The communal facilities were also kept very clean. The location of the site is great for walking and we visited a number of the surrounding villages on walks during our 4 day stay as well as the usual tourist spots like Barnard castle and high force. We also ate out at the Moorcock Inn a couple of times which was taking part in the eat out to help out scheme which made it even better value than it already was! The staff are all warm, friendly and welcoming on the site and pub. Overall a great value well located and equipped site of couples and families alike.
Perfect few nights away
Wonderful little site, we stayed 3 nights at Partrige Pod. Every pod has it’s own picnic bench and bbq slab outside, and water fountain and bin near by. Loved the washing line too -very handy! The showers and washing up area are great. Pod wasy cosy inside. The food at the pub was delicious although would recommend booking in advanced. There are no recycling facilities at the moment but they are looking into it. Thanks for a great stay!
Perfect break away
We have just returned from the best family break. We spent three nights at hill top huts. The pod itself was the perfect size for the four of us. We usually camp in a tent over the summer but I’d lost my confidence through lockdown. So to find these glamping pods was the perfect solution for us. The site was beautiful so well looked after and clearly loved by the owners. The amenities block was super clean and the additional hygiene in place due to covid-19 felt reassuring. The area itself is stunning and a part of the world we’d not visited before. We didn’t manage to make it to the Moorcock Inn for a meal, so I think we’ll have to come back another time to do that. Thanks for our lovely relaxing family break.
Fab stay! Facilities spotless. Great location to explore. Lovely staff. No concerns regarding social distancing. Will be back.
The perfect place to glamp! We had everything we needed. Staff could not be more helpful.
Great location! The pods were spotless as were the shower and toilet block. Pods had all mod cons. We had everything we needed. On arrival, the owner allowed us to check in early as our pod was ready. She was very friendly and helpful. We were also too late to eat in the pub, (our fault), but the member of staff kindly gave me a meal I could microwave in our pod. It was delicious too! Staff also asked us to give any feedback on anything they could improve upon. I couldn't think of anything. We absolutely loved staying here and plan to visit again. Thank you for a memorable stay! 😊
We just got back from a week's stay, booked in a hurry once lockdown eased! The site was great, high quality pods, very comfortable beds. We stayed in the largest style of pod and it was the perfect size for a family of 4. Great to have plenty of storage under the benches. The only thing missing was a couple of extra hooks in the pod for hanging up coats (or wet towels) but I am sure they will rectify this soon. Spotlessly clean toilet block, cleaned very regularly throughout the day. Nice and quiet site, which was just what we wanted. Good base for days out across the whole region. Highly recommend!
Fantastic camping pod
We stayed for one night here, lovely place and fantastic camping pod with everything you need! Would highly recommend it, facilities were immaculate!
We booked for two nights, myself, partner and our Son (3). From arrival to departure our stay was absolutely fantastic. The site is high up with beautiful scenery, the huts are a decent size with a small fridge, kettle and toaster. The staff at hill top are really warm and welcoming. The shower and toilet facilities are cleaned regularly. Our son was upset when we had to leave, we had a brilliant time and cant wait to return!
Great glamping experience
Very spacious, well planned pods in a beautiful hill top location with plenty of storage. The facilities were spotless and the owners / staff very friendly and helpful. My only slight qualm would be the single beds are very narrow.
Amazing and adventurous
We had the most amazing couple of nights away celebrating our anniversary that we upgraded to a 5 person pod extending our stay for family to visit. The pods are clean and well laid out. During our stay we felt the hilltops created a comfortable and cosy atmosphere to be around. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming even during covid. We had meal in the moorcock Restaraunt and the food was outstanding. This pod is the perfect base to go out on an adventure we ventured to the local park, Barnard castle and high force. We loved every minute and can’t wait until we return in August. Thanks for a lovely stay!
Worth a visit
