About Floral Farm Craft and Camping Retreat

Suitable For

Couples and up to two children – yes. Dogs and pets – no.

The farm is just on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds (01522 555780), with any number of walks and bike rides within easy reach. It's an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which hereabouts means rolling hills and valleys, and timeless villages with ancient pubs and historic churches. Quite a few circular walks start from the nearby towns of Market Rasen (six miles away) and Louth (12 miles) and you can download routes and maps from the AONB website.

The market towns are handsome old medieval survivors — this was once a rich trading area — and places like Louth and, especially, Horncastle (15 miles) are full of antique shops, so they are good places for a potter with nothing much in mind. Even the enticing city of Lincoln is only a half-hour drive away, and that's full of historic attractions, from Cathedral (01522 561 600) — tours daily, including the amazing view from the tower — to Castle (01522 554559), home to an original copy of the Magna Carta. You can also count on plenty of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants to break up the day.

With children in tow, you have plenty of options, too. Wild Pines (01673 842724) outdoor, woodland, high-ropes, and archery centre is less than a ten-minute drive away, on the edge of Market Rasen. Or for smaller kids, there's the petting farm and play zones at Rand Farm Park  (01673 858904), a 15-minute drive away. For a bucket-and-spade day, it's a longer drive out to the Lincolnshire coast — about 45 minutes from Floral Farm — where you can explore beautiful sandy beaches, dunes, and marshlands. Mablethorpe is the nearest resort, a traditional, family-friendly sort of place, with a good beach and all sorts of indoor attractions if the weather turns against you.

Food & Drink

Just a couple of miles south — five minutes in the car — the Cross Roads Inn (01673 857629) at East Barkwith is the closest place for a pint and a bite to eat. It's about the same distance east to the Heneage Arms (01507 313145) in Hainton, which has the distinction of being run by and for the community — it's staffed by volunteers and they offer a simple menu of home-cooked food (currently only open on weekends). The best destination pub, though, is the King's Head (01673 838347) in the beautiful village of Tealby, a 15-minute drive north. It's absolutely gorgeous — the oldest thatched pub in Lincolnshire, with a hearty menu of pub classics, a great beer garden, and loads of real ales.

Five miles either side of the site are the small towns of Market Rasen and Wragby, each with supermarkets, pubs, and places to eat. The Adam and Eve (01673 858586) in Wragby is a family restaurant and bar with a Mediterranean menu, or for coffee and brunch check out the March Hare (01673 842076) in Market Rasen — this also morphs into a drinks and tapas place at night.

A bit further out, but well worth the drive, is Baumber Walled Garden, a lovely restoration of a 19th-century kitchen garden for a local estate, and now with a glasshouse and garden tea room. It's about a 20-minute drive away, on the route to Horncastle.
