Adults-only camping and glamping in Lotus Belle tents with an indoor heated swimming pool and yoga sessions on site

At Mayday Retreats you can spend evenings around the campfire, mornings on the yoga mat and afternoons in the pool. That’s right — the pool. This is a rare find: a small campsite with a heated indoor swimming pool. And, better still for some of us, it’s reserved just for grown-ups. Here, you won’t be dodging water-bombing kids to swim a length but can book a private two-hour session so you can swim or float about undisturbed.

It’s an adults-only site in Lincolnshire combining the fresh air of camping and the relaxation of a spa break. As well as sessions in the pool, optional extras include Thai massage, meditation and yoga sessions. All in all, it’s a rather peaceful place to be with no dogs, no kids and no motorhomes or caravans in sight. There are ten pitches for campers with their own tents and a pair of furnished Lotus Belle tents for those who want to take it really easy, all in a flat two-acre meadow.

Facilities — other than the swimming pool which is accessed through a gate and private garden — are pretty simple: a pair of composting toilets, a flushing loo and a shower. There’s a big tent for Saturday morning yoga sessions and a mess tent where tea and coffee-making facilities are laid on, and washing-up can be done undercover. Everything is kept in perfect running order by Lisa, the amiable, capable owner of the place. She’ll welcome you to the site, give you lots of local info and then leave you to enjoy your peaceful patch of Lincolnshire countryside.

Surrounded by trees and green, Mayday Retreats is surprisingly close to the A15, just over 10 miles north of Peterborough, which makes getting here and getting around very easy. You can zip along to Bourne Woods for a walk, venture to one of the historic houses in the Lincolnshire countryside or head to Rutland Water, just 20 miles away. Or you could just stay on-site and busy yourself with the important business of campfires, yoga, swimming, massage and general relaxation.

There are three toilets (two composting, one flushing) and a shower on-site with a further toilet and shower in the nearby poolhouse. There's a kitchen mess tent which has a washing-up sink, tables and chairs and tea and coffee making facilities. Each pitch has an off-ground fire bowl and logs are available for sale on-site. The lotus bell tents are kitted out with a double bed and bedding, solar fairy lights and a table and chairs. Guests can use the fully-heated indoor swimming pool (for an extra cost). Yoga sessions run on Saturday mornings and you can book one-to-one sessions for meditation, yoga and massage too.

Four miles down the road is Bourne Wood which offers walking and cycling routes through and ancient woodland. Other pleasant places to explore within 20 miles of the site include Grimsthorpe Castle Park & Gardens (01778 591205), the 16th-century Burghley House Gardens & Deer Park (01780 752451) and Woolsthorpe Manor House (01476 860338), the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton. There's walking, cycling, boat trips and watersports at Ferry Meadows in Nene Park, 17 miles away, and Rutland Water offers more of the same on a larger scale 20 miles from site.

Food & Drink

The Horseshoe pub (01778 421576) serves food and drink and is just over half a mile from site. There are supermarkets and eateries in Bourne, three miles up the road. Host Lisa will give you a booklet of information on arrival which features local tips on places to eat and drink.

From Peterborough: On the A15, just after Kates bridge and the petrol station on the right, take the next left before the wooded area. Take the first right and the site will be on the left.

The closest railway station is at Stamford, seven miles away, but if you are keen on using public transport to get to the site it's advisable to head for the larger station at Peterborough, 13 miles away, as the 101 bus goes to Thurlby, stopping less than half a mile from the site outside The Horseshoe pub.
