Cosy and romantic shepherd's hut glamping in the heart, and at the highest heights, of the Peak District National Park

“Dream Big, Aim High”, reads the rustic red and white sign above the bed in this cosy shepherd’s hut. It seems fitting given the location. With the wood-burner stoked up for the night and the quilted double duvet pulled snuggly around you, you’ll certainly enjoy sweet dreams, while the setting, in the heart of the Peak District National Park is about as high as they come. The highest settlement in England, the local village of Flash, is less than a mile down the narrow lane.

Yet, while we can wax lyrical about the views, the surrounding mountains and the drystone-wall-striped scenery of the Peak District, it’s the nuts and bolts of hospitality that this glamping site really gets right. Set in a one-acre meadow on Gollin Farm, the two-person shepherd’s hut has an interior reminiscent of an old country cottage – think chunky Welsh dresser, deep armchairs and a stack of logs that will keep the fire going until morning – while outside there’s a firepit for late-night s’mores toasting and a barbecue for farm-shop steak. Since there’s just the one hut on the site, you’ve the whole place to yourself. There’s plenty of room to kick back beside the hut and it’s a short stroll down the meadow path to a modern toilet and shower, watched along the way by your neighbours: chickens, sheep and a single pet deer that thinks she’s part of the flock. If you come in springtime you’ll have the added bonus of buoyant lambs on site too.

While candles beside the bed, board games for rainy days and a digital radio on standby make the shepherd’s hut a neat retreat for couples, it’s walkers and outdoor enthusiasts that are most in their element. There are ample walking opportunities right from the doorstep, from Axe Edge Moor and Crome Hill to the Three Shires Heads (the hilltop point where the boundaries of Staffordshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire all meet), while nearby towns like Buxton provide popular café stops for lunch. The village of Flash, though rural, also has a decent café and pub, which acts as a popular starting point for hikers. Since it’s the highest point in England you can convince yourself the walking will all be easy downhill, too. No doubt the spectacular views – of brown peaks and rocky outcrops – will quickly make you realise otherwise.

The hut has a built-in double bed (bedding, linen and towels provided), 2 arm chairs, a side table with sink, a wood-burner (free logs and coal provided), electricity, microwave, kettle toaster, tea, coffee, mugs and more, plus a DAB CD radio. We also have broadband for you to connect. Gas BBQ, campfire pit and picnic table outside, plus a fridge in the nearby garage. A modern toilet and shower block is located around 100 metres from the hut (toiletries provided). Plenty of free parking and secure space for bikes. Sheep, a turkey, chickens and a pet deer in the adjacent field.

Suitable For

Glamping only. Shepherd's hut sleeps 2 . No smoking inside the hut. No pets.

The rural shepherd's hut is in the heart of the hills of the Peak District National Park, with England's very highest village, Flash, just 1 mile away. The result is an abundance of good walking opportunities from the doorstep, including the Manifold Trail, Monsail Trail and Tissington Trail and short local routes up Crome Hill. Picturesque Hollinsclough village is a short stroll away, while Macclesfield Forest (20 mins drive) offers a wealth of outdoor activities and wildlife to spot, including the heronry at Trentabank Reservoir. Buxton (the highest spa town in England, if you're counting) is 5 miles away and home to Buxton Opera House (01298 72190), The Dome Theatre (01298 330620), swimming baths, go karting, Go Ape (01603 895500), pools cavern and many other activities. History buffs should head to the much-filmed Chatsworth House (01246 565300).

Food & Drink

It's 1 mile to Flash Bar Stores Café (01298 22763), which does a decent breakfast, pies and traditional Derbyshire oatcakes – dine al fresco for spectacular views. The Winking Man (01538 300 361) in Upper Hulme and The Lazy Trout in Meerbrook (01538 300385) also come highly recommended for evening meals. For something a little different, The Knights Table (01298 23695) in Quarnford is a medieval-themed restaurant with a meat-heavy menu that will fuel you back up after a day's hiking in the peaks. Buxton's market days are every Tuesday and Saturday on the Market Place in Higher Buxton. Leek's main outdoor market is on Wednesdays, with indoor market days on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays in the restored Victorian Butter Market.

Beautiful, homely and relaxing

Immediately fell in love with this spot. Stunning countryside, gorgeous friendly animals, cosy well equipped shepherds hut and a warm welcome from Faye. All the family were friendly yet let us just enjoy their patch of heaven. Faye’s animals added to our stay so much. Chickens, goats and a 3 legged deer were affectionate and comical. We spent a glorious few days just chilling by the fire, playing games and reading. We could have easily done more walks and adventuring but were truly happy at Gollin’s farm soaking in nature. Highly recommend. We will return. No complaints at all . Faye is very generous, kind, down to earth , accommodating host.

A comfortable and relaxing short stay in beautiful surroundings

We stayed in the Shepherd's hut for 2 nights in June. Faye really made sure the hut was kitted with everything you would need and more, and the toilet and shower facilities across the field and fridge filled with goodies was excellent. The firepit was lovely for the summer evenings. The location is lush and peaceful area. Ideal for walks straight from the hut if you do not wish to drive. Some great views in good weather! We fell in love with the animals and their personalities- they made our stay! We will be recommending Faye's hut to our family and friends and would love to visit again ourselves!

Amazing stay

Omg...what more can we say but amazing, fantastic and 1 of the best short breaks we,ve ever had.we loved it.Perfect location, immaculate shepherds hut and Faye is the best hostess. We will definitely go back again. And will be recommending her to all our family and friends. Thankyou Faye.xx

Peaceful location with beautiful views

We’ve just had 2 nights here and thoroughly enjoyed it. An idyllic setting and perfectly located for travelling to Buxton, Bakewell and Chatsworth. We walked up Chromer Hill (with a few stops on the way up!) the start of the walk is only a mile away and the 360* views when you reach the top is definitely worth the effort. There was plenty of wood provided for using the campfire and barbecue and it was fab having animal neighbours who were tame and friendly. It’s not very often you get to make friends with a deer 🦌 We loved our glamping experience…thanks Faye x

Everything you could need

There could be a list to tell you everything that Faye was so thoughtful to include. Besides the basics which are already highlighted on any website, Faye is an amazing person, thoughtful and caring, there was eggs bacon and milk as well as butter, jam and marmalade. Towels !! I really can't praise Faye enough, she is a rare and beautiful person.

Secluded hidden gem

We really recommend this fantastic place to stay. The shepherds hut has everything you need for a cosy stay in the peak District. The surroundings are beautiful and the host could not have been more welcoming, we will definitely be back.

Perfect little getaway

The perfect little getaway! Faye was a great host, super friendly and accommodating, she went above and beyond to make it a special birthday stay. The hut has everything you need, the extra supplies Faye left for us were an added bonus. The ideal place for sitting outside and taking in the views and then sitting under stars with the fire pit burning away! The animals were wonderful, friendly and lovely to be around. Thank you Faye for a great stay, we will definitely be back.

Beautifully private, cozy and stunning views.

The location is ideal if you are looking for a quiet little retreat in the hills. The surrounding farm animals and the little guys on Gollin farm are an absolute joy to have around, and waking up the morning and seeing them munching on the grass outside the hut was so lovely. Faye has really thought of everything and the hut has plenty of supplies, so you do have everything you need. They were so friendly and welcoming, and told us about good walks or local pubs serving food, and the farm shop in Buxted where we bought some great meats to cook on the fire pit back at the hut. Would definitely return and will be telling friends about it too.

Amazing experience in the most peaceful setting!

The pictures of this place just don’t do it justice! Our stay was better than we ever imagined. A gorgeous, clean and cosy shepherds hut, with a log fire to keep warm as well as everything you need (kettle, toaster, sink, radio, pots and pans etc). The hut is surrounded by a rescue deer, goats, sheep and chickens which are all so friendly and add to the experience. Stunning surroundings and views of the countryside as well as many walking routes to explore. We can’t wait to return!

beautiful setting, lovely accommodation

Cosy and comfortable Shepard’s Hut in a picturesque setting. Adjacent field has a deer and sheep, both very friendly, which added to the overall charm of the place. Views across countryside. Host Faye very helpful and thoughtful. Plenty of logs for fire pit, a great bonus. Overall it exceeded our expectations and would highly recommend it.

Beautiful and peaceful

The location was very stunning. It was even better than the pictures. Everything you need is there to make your stay as easy and relaxing as possible. Faye was very welcoming, with fresh eggs, milk, butter and jam, tea coffee biscuits etc which really added to the place. We went by bus and as long as you plan it In advance it was relatively easy to get to, and a beautiful walk! Lucky the deer, turkey, sheep and lamb living in the fields were the cherry on the icing! We would definitely come here again

Cosy, luxury alternative stay in the Peak District

We had an amazing stay at Gollin Farm shepherd's hut. The views are stunning and it's a quiet retreat where you can relax in cosy comfort. Faye had thought of everything to make the stay extra special; fresh eggs from the farm, an umbrella and torch for the walk to the nearby facilities, logs and coal for the wood burner, tea and biscuits - it was perfect! Will definitely stay again and highly recommend to anyone.

Fantastic experience

The Shepherds Hut exceeded our expectations. Faye had lit the wood burner ahead of our arrival so that it was cosy & warm for us. The facilities were clean & well kept. There was everything we needed to make our stay warm & comfortable & the views were just stunning. It is somewhere we would certainly return to & recommend to friends & family.
