Luxury glamping with private facilities, four miles from the Suffolk coast

If you want glamping done right, go somewhere they understand you. Samantha and Peter have been running an award-winning B&B from their farmhouse, 10 minutes’ drive from the Suffolk Coast, for years now. Their move in to glamping – channeling their knowledge of first class hospitality – seemed a logical next step. Especially when the setting, in the Alde Valley, is already one of Suffolk’s most popular places to holiday in the outdoors.

Despite its former B&B credentials, Manor Farm Knodishall is still very much a working farm, growing potatoes, onions, maize and some 200,000 Christmas trees. It’s also the perfect home for the free-range hens the couple rescued a few years back and, of course, Harry and Meghan, the characterful geese that give the farm their royal stamp of approval from the privacy of a small pond. The working nature of the farm does mean you should expect the odd tractor and animal noises, but that’s proper Suffolk life and not something that will bother you. It is supposed to feel a bit like ‘camping’ after all.

There's a good dose of luxury at Manor Farm though. There are three Lotus Belle Tents in total; bulbous, cream-canvas structures pitched on a firm, flat surface. Inside they feature king-sized beds, futon-style chairs for children and hardwood furnishings, plus a wood-fired stove to keep you warm, while each has its own private bathroom and a well-equipped kitchenette. Transparent ‘stargazer panels’ in the ceiling, meanwhile, let you enjoy the best of the night sky from your bed.

Peter and Samantha pride themselves on providing the little extras that make your experience special, like hotel-quality robes and cotton bedlinen to send you straight into relaxation mode after a long day walking on the beach. They also encourage guests to use their full-sized tennis court or make the most of the large lawn at the farmhouse that’s a hot spot for sunbathers.

Set along Suffolk’s Heritage Coast, it’s four miles to the 20th-century seaside village of Thorpeness, complete with a converted water tower that now looks like a treehouse from a Disney film, and around the same distance to the shops and pubs in Aldeburgh (the two villages make for a nice circular walk). It’s four miles, too, to Snape Maltings, an old malting house that’s now been converted into an atmospheric arts venue, and five miles to the beach at Sizewell, a good spot for swimming, backed by sand dunes. In all, it’s plenty to keep you busy without ever venturing far from your tent.

Four miles from the main Suffolk coast road (the A12), Manor Farm provides quick and easy access to many of Suffolk's best attractions. The local holiday village of Thorpeness (a 10-minute drive away) was created as a coastal holiday resort by Captain Ogilvie for his friends and family. In the centre of the picturesque village is the meare, where you can hire rowing boats, and it’s a lovely two-mile coastal walk from Thorpeness to Aldeburgh – both good spots to stop for a bite to eat before walking back on a quiet inland footpath. You can happily spend a whole day window shopping in the well-stocked charity shops and designer boutiques of Aldeburgh too. It’s four miles to Snape Maltings, a former oast house and malting buildings beside the River Alde that’s now been converted in to an arts centre, with a grand music hall and shops selling crafts, pottery and upmarket homewares.

Food & Drink

There are plenty of choices locally, the best of them mainly centred around Aldeburgh. The Old Chequers, Friston (01728 688039) is just over half a mile from Manor Farm, the landlord always keeps your glass topped up and it’s easy to walk to from across the fields. If you want to try something a bit different DP’s Bar, Aldeburgh (01728453530) is a quirky Thai restaurant and bar that serves great food during the summer season. The Light House Restaurant, Aldeburgh (01728453377) is another good option, open for morning coffee, lunch and dinner, with outdoor tables and an emphasis on local fish.

Getting There

Manor Farm is located four miles east of the A12 between Saxmundham and Aldeburgh. If turning off the A12, heaing south-east, join the B1121 on your left. After half a mile, turn right, continuing on the B1121 road. After half a mile or so, the road will take a slight left but continue following the B road for another mile and a half. At this point you’ll turn left onto Church Road before turning left again in just over a quarter of a mile. From here, turn left onto Grove Road. Continue for a little over half a mile and then turn right to reach Manor Farm.
