Luxury bell tent camping on Norfolk's Hoveton Estate, within walking distance of the award-winning, family attraction Bewilderwood

Embraced by a looping meander in the River Bure, 17th century Hoveton House has been owned by the Blofeld Family for over three centuries. But they’re not the only ones to be living on the vast, 1500-acre estate. Moorhens, kingfishers and herons frequent Hoveton Great Broad, considered the most secret lake in the region, and deer roam discreetly throughout the woods. Then there are the Boggles and the Twiggles. Heard of them? Maybe not. But, prepare yourself, because these mythical creatures are sure to become your children’s next obsession.

Set in plum tree grove, a woodland clearing in the heart of the Hoveton Estate, Amber’s Bell Tent Camping comprises eight canvas bell tents, scattered across a partially wooded, four-acre space. The collection of bell tents – one of multiple glampsites set up by Norfolk-local Amber Wykes – each contain a double bed with the option of added singles to accommodate up to five people per tent. Expect all the luxury trimmings you need – comfortable bedding and linen, bunting, cooking equipment and a wood-burning stove to keep you warm – plus use of the brand new, purpose-built washblock a short stroll away.

The cotton canvas of the bell tents and the setting among the trees means this is still a glamping site with a real spirit of the outdoors. Campfires are allowed, children can climb trees and rope swings have been set up for little explorers. But the adventure of the surroundings pales in comparison to the wonderland that is Bewilderwood, a short walk away. A woodland adventure with treehouses, rope-bridge walkways, zip lines, slides and monkey bars, this award-winning, fairytale land is home to the aforementioned Boggles and Twiggles; strange creatures that lurk in the forests and swamps. Via boat rides and treetop walkways you can take the place in, from Tiptoe Valley and Twiggle Village to Long Lagoon.

It’s not all tales and make believe, though. You can hire bikes by the Bewilderwood entrance and cycle into nearby Wroxham, the gateway town of the Broads, where boats are available by the hour for pottering around on the River Bure, Wroxham Broad and Hoveton Great Broad. Canoes and kayaks are also available, for exploring the back waters either alone or by guide, while, on dry land, the 18-mile steam train trip to Aylsham, on the picturesque Bure Valley Railway, is a delight. It’s 20 minutes drive to the Norfolk coast and the same into the centre of Norwich. The magnificent gardens, glass house and arboretum of nearby Hoveton Hall is also open to visitors (10:30–5pm; closed Saturday).

The cotton canvas bell tents are fully furnished, featuring single and double beds (depending on your needs) and all bedding and linen included. Wood burners, storage and soft furnishings inside, plus a kitchen box equipped with utensils and vintage dishware. Outside each tent, you'll find a picnic table and fireside log seating and a BBQ/firepit. Brand new shower block on the field, plus a general washing station in the field for dirty dishes. There's also an onsite honesty shop for fire essentials, such as kindling, charcoal, firewood and candles. Rope swings on the trees and den building very welcome. Table tennis. Sheltered canvased areas under the trees.

Suitable For

Glamping only. Dogs not permitted. Large groups, corporate hire, birthday celebrations and (chilled out) stag and hen gatherings available by prior arrangement.

If you've got bikes, you'd be a fool not to bring them and, if you haven't, Broadlands Cycle Hire (07887 480331) is within easy walking distance of the site. There's loads of car-free space around the site for cycling around and it's a short and pleasant ride into Hoveton and Wroxham (technically two separate villages but, really, they've just merged into one town). The town is known as the gateway to the Broads – and for good reason. A number of boat hire companies vie for your custom, with day-boat hire from around £35 per hour. Most seat 6 people and let you chug around the Broads at a decent speed, taking turns playing driver and exploring the many canals, rivers and lakes (you don't need to be experienced). A pack inside each tent details other local cycling routes, along with wild swimming spots and riverside rambles – walking to nearby Horning is particularly nice. Other tranquil options include a half-days paddling with the local 'Canoe Man' (01603 783777), a ride on the Bure Valley steam railway (01263 733858) or a drive to the local beaches – it's 20 minutes to Waxham Sands (for sand dune jumping), Happisburgh (for dramatic scenery), Horsey Gap (for seal spotting) or more distant Cromer (for Victorian splendour). No stay on the Hoveton Estate is complete, however, with a visit to BeWILDerwood (01692 633033), which is just a few minute's stroll from your bell tent (see Family Friendly).

Food & Drink

Being the Broads, there's no shortage of riverside pubs (dare we say, watering holes) to choose from. It's a ¾-mile walk into the nearby village of Horning on the banks of the Bure. Try the beer garden of The Swan Inn (01692 630316; cask ales, pub-food classics) or The New Inn (01692 631223; family friendly, seafood specialities), which also has boat moorings directly alongside. For a lunchtime bite, The Staithes 'n' Willow restaurant (01692 630915) inside a 400-year-old cottage beside the river is a gem or head to nearby Hoveton Hall, where the Garden Kitchen Café (01603 784500) does good coffee, cakes and snacks.

Family Friendly

It's a short stroll from your bell tent to renowned BeWILDerwood (01692 633033), a homespun fantasy world that is one of Britain’s most unusual attractions for children. Based on series of books by Hoveton Estate owner Tom Blofeld, it brings the reedy, watery environment of the Broads to life for kids – both as a land of make-believe based on the characters in the books and an overgrown adventure playground full of rope bridges and ladders, zip wires and treehouses. You get around by way of walkways and forest paths, and a boat takes you around a tiny broad where Mildred the lisping vegetarian 'crocklebog' blows water at you!

Social Distancing Measures

We really want to welcome you to Hoveton this year, and we take yours, and our safety extremely seriously.  We are lucky, in that we operate a small glamp site, containing just 8 units, within a woodland setting on a large country estate with plenty of space for roaming around.  The tents themselves are spaced well apart.  We are looking to provide hand sanitising stations outside of each bell tent, so each tent has their own.  They will also be within the loos and communal areas.  To maximise the safety of each of our guests, we will be using an anti-microbial fogging machine in the tents after each check out to really deep clean.  The communal areas will have additional cleaning.  We have 3 loos and 3 showers within individual units and are open to the elements which helps a great deal. We are enabling a contactless check in system.  I hope this helps relieve any anxieties about coming to glamp with us.

Getting There

Hoveton Estate is 30 minutes from Norwich, just outside Wroxham on the A1062 Horning Road. As you head north out of Wroxham, there's a set of double mini-roundabouts. Go right at the second of these, then follow this road for 1¾ miles and the site is on your left, signposted for Bewilderwood. Turn in here, into the main Bewilderwood car park, from where the track to Plum Grove and private parking is clearly sign posted. Please note Hoveton Hall is different to Hoveton House and the postcode you should use for the latter estate, where the glamping site is found, is NR12 8JW.

Wroxham & Hoveton is the nearest train station (trains run from Norwich, which connects with London Liverpool Street and other main line stations). From here it's a 5 minute taxi journey to the glampsite. Buses also run from Norwich to Hoveton but the train is quicker.

We had an amazing time

We had an amazing time at the Hoveton(Bewilderwood) site in Norfolk. Every little detail in the tent is thought of and the site facilities are top quality especially the toilets and lovely showers. Loads of outside space for kids to be free and play. Table tennis, badminton/volleyball, tyre swings, woodland assault course. We had to rearrange due to restrictions and it couldn't of been simpler-friendly and helpful communication to sort a new date. We will book again

Great location in Norfolk

We are normally campers rather than glampers so it was a nice treat to stay somewhere where the tent was already pitched! The accommodate was great and made for a comfortable couple of night's sleep. We also enjoyed using the stove to take the chill off the tent in the evening. The kitchen equipment was good, if a little dusty, and it was great to have a decent knife to use! Definitely bring your own stove (as we did) if you want a quicker cup of coffee in the morning. The site wasn't full when we visited and it was a shame we were located next to a large party which meant we didn't enjoy the peace some others had referred to in their reviews. The riser rail in one of the showers was also broken so there were only 2/3 showers on the last morning too. Unfortunately as there is no one on site (contact via phone only) we were unable to raise these issues during out stay. Also worth noting that despite a "arms length" approach to checking in and out, you DO have to pay your bill in cash which was a little frustrating and involved a last minute dash to a cash point. Overall a good stay and great location for Bewilderwood and local cycle routes too.

Perfect… even if the weather wasn’t

We had an absolutely lovely stay! We took our goddaughter for a 4-day holiday, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our time at Amber’s. The Hoveton Estate site is splendid, nestled in the woodland. It is attractive, clean, and environmentally friendly. Comfy beds, great showers, games equipment provided, and everything easily to hand. The longer grass around the tents was great for encouraging wildlife and ingenious for avoiding unwanted trips on the guide ropes. As we had the site to ourselves, we set up our wildlife camera and caught video of a muntjac and also of a hedgehog meandering near our tent. Magic. Being so close to BeWILDerwood made that an easy, active day out. Though really aimed at younger children, we ALL enjoyed clambering, balancing, and sliding down zip wires. And there is so much else to enjoy nearby: we spent nearly a whole day swimming at Salhouse Broads, ate at some great cafés from Amber’s recommended list, and had lots of opportunity to play, relax and explore. Even with the soggy ending, we had a wonderful holiday... everything that we needed and nothing that we didn’t. And the sound of rain on our tent was relaxing, especially knowing that we didn’t have to pack up a wet tent at the end of our stay! This was our first glamping experience, and, without doubt, not our last. Highly recommended. Looking forward to our next visit.

Absolutely amazing 🤩

Wow....what an amazing stay we have just had at Ambers Bell Tents. We booked four tents for a group of 5 adults and 10 kids and we loved every minute. The whole site is immaculately clean and tidy and the bell tents are just stunning, comfortable and spacious. I (and a couple of other members in our party) are most definitely not “campers” but Ambers Bell Tents have converted us to Glamping and we are already planning our next trip. The kids (age between 2 and 10) had the best time and it was such a safe environment for them that all us mums felt relaxed enough for them to play and explore. Amber was extremely helpful prior to our trip and answered all our questions promptly. I without a doubt will be booking to stay here again and have already been recommending it to all my friends and family! We can’t wait to come back!!!

Fantastic family holiday

This was our first camping trip as a family, and we absolutely loved glamping at Amber's. So much thought has clearly gone into the site - the tents were great and very cosy, even though our in-tent wood stove couldn't get going because it rained so much it filled with water. As with any camping trip, we were at the mercy of the weather but it was good fun making out fire each morning. I would recommend bringing slightly longer barbeque tongs for cooking on the campfire. Our kids (2 and 3) loved the tire swings and the woodland play area, and running around in so much open space. We made use of the bicycle hire and visited Bewilderwood, as well as a day boating on the broads in nearby Horning. All highy recommended. We will definitely think of booking again, either Hoveton or one of Amber's other sites in Norfolk!

Tranquil, clean & quiet! Great for kids!

We had a great 4 night stay here. The site is clean, quiet & peaceful. The kids loved the tyre swings & woodland walk! The tent was slightly smaller than we expected & given the weather wasn’t great in hindsight I would’ve bought an event shelter to cook in as a family of 5 cramped under awning for dinner wasn’t great. The honesty shop is a great idea, although we felt the logs etc were a little overpriced. The site was impeccably clean & we never had to wait for showers or toilets. The only improvement I feel would be dedicated handwashing sinks, I didn’t like the idea of brushing my teeth in the pot wash sinks.. but maybe that’s just me! Overall I think in peak season it is a little expensive for what it is, but as seasoned campers we did enjoy not having to pitch up & take down our tent! We loved the wood burning stove, so cosy. We would definitely return. If you want to visit bewilderwood be sure to pre book, there was no availability for us. And take lots of logs for your fire pit & log burner! Great place 👍🏻

Quiet, relaxing & great for kids

We really enjoyed our 4 night stay here with 3 kids. The site is very clean & quiet & it was great to give our kids some freedom. The tent was slightly smaller than we were expecting & given we had bad weather I would’ve taken an event shelter to pop to the side for outdoor cooking as the awning is not really big enough to cook under. The kids loved the tyre swings and woodland walk. We loved the cosy wood burner & fire pit. The honesty shop is a great idea but we thought the logs were a little overpriced. We would definitely return, on the whole I think it is a little pricey in peak season for what it is but the location & tranquility is perfect - we much prefer quiet campsites like this. I think the only improvement would be the addition of some dedicated hand washing sinks for brushing teeth etc.. I didn’t like the idea of brushing my teeth at pot wash sink & I think given covid proper hand washing only sinks are important. Overall great holiday & our kids are desperate to come again! If you wish to visit bewilderwood book in advance - we couldn’t get in! And take lots of logs for fire.. you’ll need them 👍🏻.

Hassle free glamping-with great showers!

We took our 2&4yr olds and there wasn't a single issue, everything had been thought of. The tent was brilliant, enough room if needed and everything well laid out. The odd critter but hardly an issue. The site facilities were great too and the honest shop worked well. The kids loved the tyre swings and place to play and explore. The holiday probably suited to slighty older children as we did suffer sleep a little! No worries with noise past decent hours from other tents and no doubt we gave as good as we got in the mornings. Would recommend to those not loving the idea of camping but will meet in the middle.

Lovely site but a few tweaks needed

Just 8 tents so not too busy but we had the worst location right next to the kids play area which meant we had kids constantly running through our campfire area. Nowhere to dry your hair was my biggest issue but over all a great site and location.

Perfect for our first camping trip with the kids

We loved our stay at Amber's Bell Tents. The set up was great and perfect for our first camping trip with our two and four year olds. They loved it. Would highly recommend for families.

We absolutely loved the location, so peaceful. Beautiful setting, great places to explore. Our daughter (8) just loved all the games that were provided and tree swings. We had amazing fun toasting marshmallows on the campfire. Honesty shop is a fabulous idea, the amenities were second to none. Everything about it was perfect for a short break away.
