Child-free tipi glamping in a well-located Norfolk meadow

Sioux tipis may be more associated with the Great Plains of North America than the rural paddocks of North Norfolk but the two have at least a couple of things in common. Norfolk is, for example, exceedingly flat (a boon for summer cyclists) and generally enjoys the sunniest, driest weather in the UK. And, while Salle Moor Farm near Reepham may not be home to cowboys or herds of wild buffalo, it does make up for it with an altogether more British form of farming, with a vegetable box scheme and a small-craft ale brewery inside a 500-year-old barn.

Past the farm buildings and out into a lush two-acre meadow beyond, you’ll find Indian Summer Tipis, a collection of just five traditional Sioux tipis well spread out around the meadow. Inside they’re beautifully furnished with double beds, rugs, coffee tables and rustic touches, such as vintage milk jugs or a banjo you can strum. Each tipi structure, meanwhile, is traditionally built and a real work of fine craft: See the long wooden poles, the short staves stitching the circular doorway in place and the fitted cotton tipi liners for added warmth and insulation. Stepping inside there’s a magnificent sense of height and airiness – the perfect space for summer in a hay meadow.

The ambience of Indian Summer Tipis is undeniably chilled out. Campfires are very much encouraged – with a firepit and seating outside each tipi – and there’s a separate campfire cooking area for all, with a tripod, grill and hanging skillet. This, alongside the communal kitchen wagon, creates a great social point for guests and is a fantastic place for groups to convene – it’s possible to book out the entire glamping site for you and your friends.

It’s a 15–20-minute walk to Salle’s church and village green and around the same in the opposite direction into the market town of Reepham, where the main square has a clutch of great places to eat and a market every Wednesday morning. On the way into Reepham you’ll cross the Marriott’s Way, a 25-mile car-free trail that runs between Norwich and another nearby market town, Aylsham. It’s a fantastic route to follow in either direction, either for a day out in Norwich or for a stop at the beautiful, National Trust-owned Blickling Estate. You can bring your own bikes or hire them from the little cycle shop inside the old trail-side railway station.

Nearby

Indian Summer Tipis has a quintessentially Norfolk setting, surrounded by magnificent countryside and villages but also within striking distance of a good market town. Right from your tipi the area is fantastic for walking (ample footpaths with good access) and there's a magnificent church in Salle, just across the fields, striking for its size given the tiny village – it was funded by several local lords, including the Boleyn family. For cycling, The Marriotts Way Heritage Trail is just down the lane (less than a mile away) and offers a car-free route all the way into Norwich or, in the opposite direction, to the market town of Aylsham where National Trust-owned Blickling Hall has extensive grounds, gardens and a lake to roam around, as well as going into the 17th-century stately home itself. Aylsham isn't the nearest town, however. It takes less than half an hour to walk from Indian Summer Tipis into the central market square of Reepham, where there's a choice of restaurants and cafés (see Food & Drink) and independent shops, including the excellent Flower Folk Florist (01603 879555) and the Koti Store, a shop dedicated to helping reduce single use plastics.

Food & Drink

Indian Summer Tipis isn't the only business set on Salle Moor Farm. The barns around the farmhouse, a short walk away, are also home to the All Day Brewing Company (01603 327656), a small-time brewers utilising their 20-acre organic orchard and specialising in wild and mixed fermentations. They also ferment a range of foods for the kitchen and serve up freshly made vegetarian and vegan food, including wood fired, sourdough pizzas on Friday and Saturday evenings (beers and ales available Tuesday–Saturday). The farm also hosts a vegetable box scheme, Salle Moor Market Garden (01603 879046), so organic seasonal vegetables and mixed salad leaves can be purchased right on your doorstep.

Elsewhere, The Crown (01603 870964) in Reepham is the nearest pub (about a mile away), though continue into the centre of town for more (and better) options. The Kings Arm's (01603 870345), a 17th-century coaching inn, serves good food and has live jazz in the courtyard some evenings, while Georgian country house, Dial House (01603 879900) is the one for fine dining. Both are on the main square, where there's also a good butcher's and, just off the square, V's café (01603 879300), which offers something more quick and casual during the day. Three miles in the opposite direction, it takes around 10 minutes to drive to beautiful and historic Heydon, where The Earle Arms pub (01263 587376) and a local tearoom (01263 587211) both have a good view of the church, the green and generally pretty surroundings of the tiny hamlet.

The Owner Says

Off the road less travelled and tucked away, you'll find us in the heart of Norfolk, set between the Bure and Waveney Valleys. Set in a beautiful two-acre meadow in the grounds of a private hall farm estate.

We are a small, low impact camp, with just five tipis. Offering child-free boutique accommodation for up to 11 guests only. Ideal for couples or friends wanting a getaway surrounded by nature to experience some wholesome, slow outdoor living in style.

Each tipi is sensitively spaced so guests can make the most of the peaceful, natural location.

When it comes to being under canvas, these are elegant spaces. Nothing quite compares to the feeling of being in a tipi. With its cathedral-like spire, creating a wonderfully light and airy space.

Thoughtfully furnished and with a taste for simply styled chic interiors, our 6M diameter tipis have a double bed with real mattress, feather duvet and pillows. Pure crisp cotton bed linen, throws and blankets for extra camping comfort. Wooden floors and rugs to keep you snug, solar lighting and lanterns. All are hung with fitted cotton tipi liners for added warmth and luxury.

Outside your tipi you have your own fire-pit bbq,  table and seating. (logs and locally made charcoal can be bought on site).

On our meadow, we have the beautifully handcrafted Kitchen Cabin Wagon, super well equipped to ensure that guests have everything needed to cook up delicious feasts. Complete with outdoor lounge, dining area.

We have lovely hot showers and compost toilets.

Being very easy to explore the location further, our site is linked via the networks of sometimes ancient footpaths and bridleways. Leading through many different landscapes of open fields, woodlands and wetlands. An array of birds, animals and wildflowers can be spotted from the meadow or whilst walking, including birds of prey, owls, kingfishers, herons, hares, deer, butterflies and orchids. Perfect for a gentle, slow summer stroll any time of day. Sunset or sunrise being particularly beautiful.

For supplies, Reepham is just over 1 mile away. It has several independent shops, cafes and pubs. A deli and farm shop for foodie treats, a convenience store, butchers, Newsagent, Post Office and pharmacy.

Social Distancing Measures

To reassure all guests, we have upgraded our cleaning protocol in-line with the government guidelines. This involves a daily deep clean of all shared facilities using a WHO approved Anti-viral disinfectant used by the NHS to wipe down surfaces in the kitchen, loos and showers. Hand sanitisers will also be provided.
Between bookings we use a anti- microbial fogging machine to disinfect the tipis and all soft furnishings.
Although we provide bedlinen and towels we wish to offer you the option of bringing your own. If you prefer to do so, please contact us nearer to the time of your stay.
We believe in the common sense of our guests and ask that you behave responsibly and respectfully to others during your stay.
We hope this allays any anxieties you may have. Thank you.

Lovely weekend marred by disappointing customer care

We spent the bank holiday weekend here for a 40th birthday and largely had a great time. However we have been left with a sour taste in our mouth - having had to sleep in leaky tipis that did not resemble anything like the pictures depicted on the website, the most disappointing thing was the response (and lack of) from the owners. Having all left our various bases to get to Norfolk (some coming from Wales) we were called on our journey to suggest we reschedule, which was obviously impossible. This caused unnecessary anxiety! Rain in England is inevitable, and so you would expect precautions would be made on a glamping site, however this was not the case. It is a massive shame that the owners were so defensive and did not respond to our last email. I can’t therefore recommend this place as you can’t be sure of great customer care.

Lovely tipi with great facilities

This was a nice weekend away. Tipis were nicely kitted out and there was a full kitchen wagon to use with tea and coffee. Good location with North Norfolk Coast nearby. The only downside was the Allday Brewing Company, which was part of the attraction for us. Service was slow and they had a very limited selection of beers available as they were running down their beers.

Stunning

Amazing tranquil location and beautiful, comfortable tipis. Perfect mix of nature, outdoors and the right amount of comfort (lots). We had a lovely time in spite of bad luck with the weather. Nick and Maddie were great and there when needed. Would recommend the breakfast box. Will definitely be back

A magical weekend away

Four of us stayed here for a long weekend and absolutely loved it. The tipis were cosy and every little thing had been thought of. We loved the outdoor hot showers and spent every evening cooking round the communal fire with newfound friends from other tipis. Can't recommend it highly enough

Great outdoor experience

Maddie and Nick were great hosts. Everything was better than we expected. The bed was really comfortable with lovely cotton bedding and fluffy towels. The showers and kitchen area had everything we needed and more. Was great to use the fire pit outside our tipi and use the communal pit to chat to the other people staying. The sky was very clear and you could see so many stars. Was also lovely to try the craft beers and the veg curry on the farm. The village of Reepham was beautiful and we had breakfast in Sarah’s cafe. We did not have the best of weather but the tipi survived storm Francis.

Incredible Relaxing Experience

We absolutely loved our stay at Indian Summer Tipis. The tipi was immaculate and amazingly furnished with a large comfortable double bed. The facilities were flawless and we particularly loved the outside shower! We used the communal kitchen to cook on a couple of evenings which was very easy. We also definitely recommend the brewery on site called ‘All Day Brewing Company’ which was a 30 second walk from the campsite. Overall we loved our stay and Maddie and Nick made us feel very welcome! Definitely would recommend!

Relaxing weekend

We arrived at Indian Summer Tipis on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The site is set in a large beautiful open field, there is so much space between the tipis, ensuring peace and privacy. The open air shower is fantastic as is the wonderful kitchen cabin, which has everything you need. Close by is Marriots Way, a great track to walk, cycle or run along. The onsite brewery is a plus, serving a delicious vegetarian curry. They also have a good range of their own beers and ciders. The local spa shop in Reepham is well stocked. We also visited the coast, just 30 minutes away. The hosts, Maddie and Nick are lovely. Making sure you have everything you need and giving information on where to visit. The site provides the perfect relaxing break.

Perfect rural escape

We really enjoyed our two night stay and loved the whole site, especially the hot outside shower and fairly lights. We felt that a lot of thought had gone into everything, evident by little touches like super fluffy towels, comfortable beds, lovely seating areas, private firepit/BBQs with utensils laid out ready to go. The owners were really friendly, as were the other guests which added to the whole experience. The tipis were nicely spaced out which gave the perfect balance between private and sociability. Location was perfect for rural walks - we came in a taxi from Norwich so no car which wasn't an issue.

Instant relaxation

From the moment we arrived at Indian summer tipis it was like taking a deep breath, stunning surroundings and a wonderful concept. Maddie & Nick were the best hosts possible, they are warm, friendly and you can feel all the love, hardwork and passion that had gone into making the camp a magical place to be. The location was ideal with the coast a short drive and a brewery on site was perfect, we couldn’t have asked for any more. We wished we had stayed longer , so if you’re thinking of booking , book an extra night than you were planning and you won’t regret it. Thank you to Nick and Maddie for the most wonderful few days away, we cannot wait to return.

Simple and delightful.

We stayed with Indian Summer Tipis last year, had a wonderful time round the fire and had our first night in a tipi! Was amased how comfortable it was and we slept so well! The headge rows were heavy with slows and blackberries, and the sun shon. Sitting in the giant oak and watching the clouds was a favourite moment of my stay. Norfolk realy does have some beautiful countryside. The proprietors, Mady and Nick, had put so much time and thought into setting up a simple and delightful site. Made us very welcome, looked after the fire and gave us the space to enjoy a delightful break. Couldn't fault it!
