Modern pods with historic views, plus access to the best of the Broads and Norfolk's east coast

Runham Swim Windmill, three miles from Britain’s most easterly beaches, stands out against Norfolk’s big skies and flat landscape. Whether in winter mists or summer sun it’s a landmark of utter beauty. Tarred blacked bricks rise 30-feet off the ground to its white wooden cap, akin to an upturned boat, and a small fan wheel pokes from the rear like a peacock’s tail. It’s only in the last few decades that the Norfolk Windmill Trust have set about its restoration – they hope to add main sails, too, when funding allows – and even more recently that the mill’s owners began to create a small glamping site in a nearby meadow. For a classic Norfolk view and a whole dose of glamping comforts, there are few places we’d rather be.

Juxtaposed against views of the 200-year-old mill, the three brand new pods, built in 2019 are a thoroughly modern affair and come with all mod cons, including en-suite bathrooms, WiFi, intelligent heating panels and smart televisions. The Siberian Larchwood cladding is like a present day version of the wooden cap on the old mill top and lends the pods excellent insulation throughout the year. Inside it has a seriously sleek, 21st-century feel, while outside it’s a short stroll to some of the most timeless views in the region. Not that you need wander off. There’s a terrace, picnic table and firepit directly outside each pod. You can happily while away the hours here with a glass of wine or a cold beer straight from your pod’s fridge.

From the aptly named Millview Meadow a footpath runs out to the bank of the Rive Bure, where Runham Swim Mindwill stands – so named after the cows that would once be herded down here to swim across to pastures opposite. From there it’s possible to walk east to the river mouth at Great Yarmouth or upriver to the beautiful villages of Acle and Thurne (good pubs along the way). If the water itself appeals then you can hire canoes and boats in Acle too or drive 20 minutes further into the Broads to popular spots like Potter Heigham, Horning and Wroxham. Then there are the myriad of seaside options; Great Yarmouth (10 minutes), Waxham Sands (25 minutes) and Winterton (15 minutes) where a colony of seals hangs out. All in all it means Millview Meadow has not just a stunning view but a convenient location to match. A quiet glamping backwater that still has access to the very best of the Norfolk Broads and the east coast.

Nearby

Millview Meadow is located in a peaceful village surrounded by countryside. There is a footpath that runs along the edge of the meadow that takes you up to the River Bure. From here, it is possible to walk along the river wall either towards the mouth of the river at Great Yarmouth, or upwards of the river towards villages such as Acle and Thurne. There are lots of pubs along the way (see Food & Drink) and the footpath will also take you to a local fishing lake, available for private hire. It’s an ideal place for fishing, picnics, wildlife watching or just a peaceful day out. As well as walking, the best way to get under the skin of the area is by boat. There's boat hire in the neighbouring villages of Potter Heigham and Martham, with options from canoes to motorised boats with beds. The Broads is also home to a decent network of cycle routes, country lanes and woodland paths, suitable for cyclists of all abilities – you could even cycle out to the local beaches, including Winterton-on-sea and Waxham, both of which are popular in the summer months but are also a great place to spot the seals and their pups in the winter.

Food & Drink

The Studio Art Gallery and Tea Rooms (01493 751794) in Acle. They are a small family run art studio and gallery that has an adjoining tea room which serves a variety of home-made cakes, refreshments, light lunches and snacks.  Accessible by car, bike or on the river river, The Acle Bridge Inn (01493 750288) is a family-run pub offering good food and service, serving all day, every day with children, dogs and muddy boots welcome. 2 miles down the road from Millview Meadow is the Ferry Inn (01493 751096) – a classic riverside pub with south-facing views of the Bure, complete with a kids’ play area in the garden. For a special treat, Fleggburgh Kings Arms (01493 368333) is by award winning chef, Mark Dixon.

Open

All year.

Family Friendly

Located just up the road from Millview Meadow, Thrigby Wildlife Gardens (01493 369477) is a wildlife park at home in the landscaped grounds of Thrigby Hall with a special collection of animals from Asia – including tigers, crocodiles and noisy gibbons (you can hear them from the meadow sometimes!).

Great glamping weekend

We had a great weekend staying in our pod. The pod is amazing and has everything you could want. It's in the most peaceful of locations where you can hardly hear a sound, very relaxing and we'll most definitely be returning.

Thank you so much!

Magical

This glamping pod was so luxurious its had everything we needed and more. The small homey touches of milk, marshmallows and cookies were much loved and the pod it self was so well equipped with an oven and even a heated mirror was well thought out to give us a stay that was 5*. We couldn't of thanked the owners and family more for everything they did to accommodate us. Will diffently be back to a dream location to support the farm diverstation project. Thankyou.x

First time glamping , But better than I expected

Our pod beautifully presented, the welcome pack was more than I expected. Needed for nothing! I'd far more like to live in the pod than my own house! Not bothered or interrupted by anyone on our stay. Would definitely recommend!

So peaceful

This was our first glamping trip (and due to COVID rules our 3rd date booked) and we have to say it was so relaxing and peaceful. Firstly, the owners were great at ensuring we got rebooked after the lockdowns. We stayed in Curlew and it had everything we needed to feel comfortable for our stay. From the king size bed, kitchenette, complimentary cookies (delicious) and outdoor space with your own fire pit what more could you need. The supermarket was a 15min drive away with Great Yarmouth itself being the same distance. We took a drive to Beccles for a walk and then drove to the Roman Fort for another walk (there are plenty of circular walks around the broads so spoilt for choice). The best part was that it was so quiet and peaceful with the sound of wildlife nearby. If you’re lucky you’ll see plenty of pheasants, hares and even the odd small deer (we saw 2 sleeping in the crop behind where the pods are). Would definitely recommend anyone to book and stay here.

Absolutely Stunning

We have just returned from a 2 night stay in the Lapewig pod. We are a family of 2 adults & 2 children (6yrs & 4yrs) first time glamping for all of us. I was feeling a little nervous after covid about things being clean & because it was our first time glamping. There was absolutely no need because as soon as I saw how clean, modern & spacious our pod was, I instantly felt relaxed. The location is perfect, the views are beautiful, my girls had the best time ever. They absolutely loved the bunk beds. We had a lovely little hamper of fresh eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes & even found fresh bacon & sausages in the fridge- I couldn’t remember if we paid extra for this pr it wad included, either way we were really impressed. Girls loved the home made cookies- they were delicious. The owners have thought about everything you could possibly want for a relaxing weekend away. We loved sitting by the fire pit in the evenings. If you are thinking about booking....you will not be disappointed. I actually felt sad when we left, we will 100% be booking again. My only suggestion would be to have something to hand to cut the wood for the fire as the logs were quite big & we stupidly didn’t bring anything with us. Thank you so much for giving us the most perfect & relaxing family break. Danielle & Family

Excellant 'Posh' Pod

We decided to go glamping for the first time for our 25th wedding anniversary! We decided to do something different, we were not disappointed. I've decided to call them 'Posh' Pods as they were beautifully thought out. Lovely comfortable king size bed, lovely shower, water always hot too. Tea, sugar, coffee and gorgeous biscuits too. Cooking oils, salt and pepper, washing up liquid, tea towels, cloths and bin bags all supplied. Weather was kind so we visited Wroxham which was about 30 mins away where you can hire boats outs for a couple of hours or for the day. Roys supermarket is there amongst other shops, cafes, restaurants that face the Broads so you can watch the boats while having a coffee or lunch. We then visited Winterton on the sea which isn't far from the Pod, which is a lovely sandy beach which stretches for miles and there is a cafe there too. Can not recommend this pod enough and we will definitely be going back!!

1st Time Glampers!

We’ve just returned from a 2 night stay in Curlew. The pods are absolutely stunning, clean and beautifully decorated. The owners have thought of everything you would need to use their site as a base to travel around the lovely Norfolk Broads. The info pack was very helpful, the milk, tea, coffee and biscuits were all an unexpected and appreciated additional extra (thank you). The beds were super comfy and our 3 year old loved sleeping in the cabin-style bunk beds. Unfortunately the weather was not in our favour, so we didn’t really get to enjoy the private outdoor space but again it was all beautifully laid out. Although there are 3 pods here, we didn’t feel overlooked or encroached upon at all. We’ll be Glamping you again!! Thank you

Beautiful StayCay

Just had tow nights at Millview with my husband and two year old. Beautiful pod it was better then we excited, we enjoyed the fire pit and a glass of wine. The views are surrounding area are perfect for a calm break. We are at the Boathouse as suggested as we loved it The Pod itself was perfect, so clean and fresh and had everything we needed, our son literally fell in love with his Pod bed. We would love to stay again, thank you so much for a well needed break x

very comfortable and peaceful getaway

We spent 4 days in Curlew. We picked Millview Meadow because it was a good way to be suitably distanced from other tourists (ensuite so no shower blocks, self-catering so no breakfast buffet to contend with) whilst still having our creature comforts (wifi, showers, proper bed, heating if necessary). The location is great, very peaceful with a great view over fields of sheep, I enjoyed spending my morning sitting on the deck and reading a book in the sun with a cup of tea and 2 of the biscuits that the owners kindly provided. While it is quite rural, it was still only a short drive away from beaches for days out seal spotting and villages for supplies, and there is a footpath for walks close by where we saw swans and their cygnets. Thrigby Hall wildlife garden is also very close, we really enjoyed going round it on the day it was overcast and windy. Inside the cabin, the bed was firm and comfortable, hot water was always available, small fridge and equipped kitchen meant we could have bacon sandwiches for breakfast and had the option of doing dinner in rather than going out every night. Wifi was good enough to watch bbc iplayer in the evening after a day of touring around Norfolk. I would happily come back again, even after social distancing is finished, its a great place to recharge and a lot less hassle than flying somewhere.

Father and Son weekend trip

To be honest, the original thought was to camp for the weekend....but logistical reality told us this was not sensible (time and weather!) and so we sought an alternative. These glamping pods seemed to fit the bill in so may ways.....in theory anyway....on the web... ..and then we arrived in reality...and reality blew our minds! These pods are amazing and have been put together and furnished with such attention in mind. All the utensils, cooking facilities, towels, soap etc that made this stay quite comfortable, freeing and easy. My 16 yr old son and I have cycled to the beach, walked along the Broads, eaten at the local pub(s) and walked some more and got to know each other better for it. We will be back as we loved the comfort and brilliance of these pods. If you are after a quiet, relaxing and comfortable stay where you can breathe and soak in the fresh air then book here... you won't be disappointed.

Perfect little country escape

My boyfriend and I stayed in Curlew for 2 nights for my birthday and it was the perfect little country escape. Our pod was immaculate and actually more spacious than we expected. The local recommendations for activities, pubs and restaurants were so helpful and helped us create our perfect itinerary. The surrounding villages are so pretty and everyone was so friendly, we didn't want to leave. We ventured out for dinner on our first ngiht, then made full use of the bbq facilities on our second night, followed by some magical stargazing. We would definitely recommend Millview Meadow and woudl certainly consider coming back.
