Modern pods with historic views, plus access to the best of the Broads and Norfolk's east coast

Runham Swim Windmill, three miles from Britain’s most easterly beaches, stands out against Norfolk’s big skies and flat landscape. Whether in winter mists or summer sun it’s a landmark of utter beauty. Tarred blacked bricks rise 30-feet off the ground to its white wooden cap, akin to an upturned boat, and a small fan wheel pokes from the rear like a peacock’s tail. It’s only in the last few decades that the Norfolk Windmill Trust have set about its restoration – they hope to add main sails, too, when funding allows – and even more recently that the mill’s owners began to create a small glamping site in a nearby meadow. For a classic Norfolk view and a whole dose of glamping comforts, there are few places we’d rather be.

Juxtaposed against views of the 200-year-old mill, the three brand new pods, built in 2019 are a thoroughly modern affair and come with all mod cons, including en-suite bathrooms, WiFi, intelligent heating panels and smart televisions. The Siberian Larchwood cladding is like a present day version of the wooden cap on the old mill top and lends the pods excellent insulation throughout the year. Inside it has a seriously sleek, 21st-century feel, while outside it’s a short stroll to some of the most timeless views in the region. Not that you need wander off. There’s a terrace, picnic table and firepit directly outside each pod. You can happily while away the hours here with a glass of wine or a cold beer straight from your pod’s fridge.

From the aptly named Millview Meadow a footpath runs out to the bank of the Rive Bure, where Runham Swim Mindwill stands – so named after the cows that would once be herded down here to swim across to pastures opposite. From there it’s possible to walk east to the river mouth at Great Yarmouth or upriver to the beautiful villages of Acle and Thurne (good pubs along the way). If the water itself appeals then you can hire canoes and boats in Acle too or drive 20 minutes further into the Broads to popular spots like Potter Heigham, Horning and Wroxham. Then there are the myriad of seaside options; Great Yarmouth (10 minutes), Waxham Sands (25 minutes) and Winterton (15 minutes) where a colony of seals hangs out. All in all it means Millview Meadow has not just a stunning view but a convenient location to match. A quiet glamping backwater that still has access to the very best of the Norfolk Broads and the east coast.

Comfortable break with your dog
Everything has already been said about this little gem in Norfolk. It’s picturesque location, splendid views and access to river and countryside walks really has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Add to that a well presented and equipped “Hobbit Hut” and you have a magical experience Myself my partner Rob, the two grandsons ( Tommy and Jacob) and especially Ruby the Labrador made good use of the secure grounds. Lovely touches, such as the breakfast welcome pack, cookies and dog bag were good surprise

Perfect Glamping trip
We had an amazing stay at the Wigeon pod. Our first time Glamping with our pup and it didn’t disappoint. The pod was spotless, the bed was like sleeping on a cloud and the special touches made it even better - dog treats and marshmallows for the camp fire were a highlight! Would love to visit again and will recommend to friends.

To ensure our pods are Covid secure, the following measures are in place: – Deep clean and sanitation of all areas by one designated cleaner – No shared facilities on site, each pod has its own en-suite and kitchenette – 3 pods on site, situated 25m distance from one another – Self check-in
Nearby attractions

Millview Meadow is located in a peaceful village surrounded by countryside. There is a footpath that runs along the edge of the meadow that takes you up to the River Bure. From here, it is possible to walk along the river wall either towards the mouth of the river at Great Yarmouth, or upwards of the river towards villages such as Acle and Thurne. There are lots of pubs along the way (see Food & Drink) and the footpath will also take you to a local fishing lake, available for private hire. It’s an ideal place for fishing, picnics, wildlife watching or just a peaceful day out. As well as walking, the best way to get under the skin of the area is by boat. There's boat hire in the neighbouring villages of Potter Heigham and Martham, with options from canoes to motorised boats with beds. The Broads is also home to a decent network of cycle routes, country lanes and woodland paths, suitable for cyclists of all abilities – you could even cycle out to the local beaches, including Winterton-on-sea and Waxham, both of which are popular in the summer months but are also a great place to spot the seals and their pups in the winter.

Food and drink

The Studio Art Gallery and Tea Rooms (01493 751794) in Acle. For a special treat, Fleggburgh Kings Arms (01493 368333) is by award winning chef, Mark Dixon.
