Romantic shepherd's hut glamping with hot tubs in the Norfolk fens

We love the North Norfolk Coast as much as the next person — and the next person and the person next to them. That is to say: doesn’t everyone love the North Norfolk Coast? And therein lies the problem for glampers who like a quiet spot: campsites and accommodation near the coast can get ever so busy. Likewise the county’s Broads, especially in summer. But don’t give up on Norfolk just yet. Instead, head for The Fens; the area has the big skies, waterways and wildlife that this county is famous for, but with none of the crowds. Especially not at Bank House Meadows, where three shepherd’s huts with hot tubs offer adult-only getaways in peaceful countryside.

Bank House Meadows is in the far west of Norfolk, as close to the Cambridgeshire town of Wisbech as it is to Norfolk’s Downham Market. It’s the heart of The Fens, an area of flat and fertile farmland, crisscrossed by waterways. The shepherd’s huts are new but utterly at home here. Their resting spot — and yours if you choose it — is tucked in one of two tree-lined meadows, once used to graze the farmer’s donkey.

The farming family who owned this place for generations have recently moved on, and so it’s new owners Andrew and Debbie who’ll look after you on site. They’ve created a getaway for couples who love the outdoors, as each shepherd’s hut has a stylish en suite, a comfy double bed and all the kitchen kit you’ll need. But, perhaps best of all, there’s a hot tub, a fire pit and a hammock outside in your own, private little plot. It’s the perfect place to watch the birds, who flit about in the surrounding mature trees or to look out for shooting stars after another Norfolk sunset.

Those can be quite startling here and are best witnessed from the bank of Bank House Meadows, a short walk away on the site’s gravel paths. Step onto it and beyond the river, your view is all sky and fields. Walk left or right along the rivers and you’ll get further into Fenland and deeper into conversation with each other. If that pace is too slow, there are bikes for hire too with a tandem available for a particularly romantic ride. Beyond pootling about in this pleasant scenery, the closest destinations require a car: Downham, Wisbech, the Welney Wetland Centre and the Sandringham Estate. Even the North Norfolk Coast is well within a day trip’s distance but, once you’re here, romantic and remote, you may find it hard to leave. It’s certainly impossible to forget.

Nearby

Walking and cycling in the area offers amazing views over non-challenging terrain and there's cycle hire on-site — including a tandem bike! Andrew and Debbie are happy to tell you about their favourite local routes. A non-navigable river, Middle Drain, runs close by and as it's not used by motorised vehicles, is a great place for fishing (ask about day tickets on-site), paddleboarding, kayaking and even wild swimming. The site is between Downham Market and Wisbech, both historic market towns which are worth visiting and around eight miles from the site. It's a 45-minute drive to the coastal resorts on the North Norfolk Coast with Hunstanton being the closest. There are lots of wildlife-watching opportunities on the coast but the closest nature reserve is the recommended Welney Wetland Centre (01353 860711), 14 miles from site. The Sandringham Estate is a half-hour drive away (about 23 miles from site).

Food & Drink

A welcome hamper is provided but to really treat yourself you can pre-order a cooked breakfast to be delivered to your hut or book afternoon tea to be served up on the bank, looking over the river and fens. You can also pre-order butcher's packs with produce from award-winning Stowbridge butchers, Sargeants, and fruit and veg from your host's garden and local farm shop, Landymores. Both of those suppliers are recommended if you want to stock up yourselves and can be found in Stowbridge, five miles away. While you are there, you might also like to pop to The Heron (01366 384040), for a pint or a bite to eat or to the nearby Hare Arms (01366 382229) in Stow Bardolph. Cave Kitchen (01366 659351) Turkish restaurant and Naxos (01366 858283), an Italian, both in Downham Market, eight miles from site are also recommended.
