An adult-only shepherds hut retreat in the Norfolk Brecks, with a luxurious outdoor spa area.

There are shepherds huts, and then there are the shepherds huts at Thompson Hall Retreat. A retreat in the truest sense of the word, the trio of elegant structures at this East Anglian escape offer all the features we've come to expect of the shepherds hut – wood-burning stove, neat little kitchenette, and luxury king sized bed. But it's the en-suite bathtub and spacious veranda that tell you this is a step up from the more rustic of shepherds' abodes, not to mention the luxurious outdoor spa with a hot tub, sauna and solar shower. After all, nothing says luxury like stargazing from the foamy comfort of your steaming al fresco tub.

Although most of your whims will be taken care of as standard, Thompson Hall Retreat offers a range of packages to upgrade to with everything from fresh flowers, and Neal's Yard pamper boxes to full-time access to the outdoor spa area (which isn't included in the regular price). And if the occasion calls for it, why not order in one of Thompson Hall's bespoke retreat boxes? The hamper choices range from antipasti and BBQ meat platters to the ever popular Twilight Retreat box with everything you could want for your sugar fix – marshmallows, strawberries, ice-cream and enough chocolate to sate even the sweetest of teeth. Enjoying beside the campfire is essential.

If you can bare to tear yourself away from your cosy cabin in the woods, the natural wonders of Norfolk are just beyond the retreat walls. Thompson village lies within the sprawling Thetford Forest, itself part of the lesser known Norfolk Brecks. While the North Norfolk Coast and the famous Norfolk Broads (both eminently reachable from the site) are the destinations of choice for most tourists to the East of England, the Brecks are one of the region's hidden gems. Brimming with a vibrant variety of flora and fauna, an unmapped woodland walk is the best way to imbibe the atmosphere of this magical woodland.

For those glampers whose extra-curricular activities don't extend much beyond the village itself (and let's face it, we wouldn't blame you given the healthy dose of idleness a stay here engenders), Thompson is a delightfully pretty village of quaint chocolate box thatched cottages, some dating from the 14th century. And we're pleased to report that, in the 300-year-old Chequers Inn, the village also boasts that most essential of ingredients to all great getaways, the quintessential English country pub.

Each shepherds hut (Hartley Hut, Bishy Barney Bee and Whoa-Stop) comes with a luxury king sized bed for two, kitchenette (featuring microwave, wood burner, fridge-freezer and gas hob), and bathroom (with large shower, illuminated mirror, electric towel rail, wash basin and proper flushing loo). The veranda features a double ended bath, plus a fully equipped kitchen with combi-oven. There's an al fresco dining area and gas firepit. All basic washing-up provisions are provided (towels, dish cloths, washing up liquid) plus complimentary toiletries. Dogs are permitted in Whoa-Stop and you can even bring your horses as part of a livery package. Outdoor spa area available to book (additional cost) with a hot tub, sauna, relaxation area and solar shower (robes and towels provided).

Suitable For

Adults only for our main retreat site. Our Safari Tent and Holiday Cottage offer family friendly accommodation. Dogs are permitted in selected units.

The 46-mile long Peddars Way is the ancient Roman road running through the Norfolk Brecks, Thetford Forest and all the way to Hunstanton on the North Norfolk Coast. It's cycle and horse friendly too if you fancy a two-wheeled/four-hooved adventure. Thetford Forest itself is the UK's largest lowland forest with over 47,000 acres to explore. Woodland walks, mountain biking trails and a rich array of wildlife are all on offer. The Pingo Trail is another unmissable walk that takes in the many ancient woodland ponds that dot the region – don't forget your wellies! And of course, it wouldn't be a visit to Thetford without dropping in at the Dad's Army Museum (07562 688641). The town played the role of Walsingham-on-Sea, the fictitious seaside town that served as the setting for Captain Mainwaring's calamitous corps in the iconic BBC sitcom.

Food & Drink

There's a range of bespoke hampers on offer from cheese and Steaks to breakfast, BBQ and that all important hot chocolate box. Our local, The Chequers Inn (01953 483360) is a quintessential English pub with thatched roof, real ales, and wholesome pub grub. For a romantic evening meal out, The Mulberry (01842 824 122) offers a superlative choice of Mediterranean-inspired dishes that make use of Norfolk's finest local produce.

Perfect getaway

Beautiful minimoon after our wedding to relax and chill in the peaceful surroundings. Everything we needed and more an couldn’t of wishes for a more perfect spot. We will return next year :)

Peaceful evening in the Whoa-Stop

I spent one night in the Whoa-Stop shepherds hut and it was fantastic. 1 adult, 2 dogs but definitely possible for 2 adults and 2 dogs. Facilities were great, kitchens were equipped with everything I needed to cook dinner/breakfast. Outdoor bath is superb, log burner also great although some instructions might have been beneficial for people who aren't experienced in using them. The breakfast platter was excellent. Surroundings are peaceful and offer an opportunity to disconnect from the world. Will definitely be back!

Idyllic setting, small grumbles.

Two of us stayed in the Giraffe Enclosure, for two nights. The accommodation is beautiful, and romantic and we can only echo the great things already said above Constructive feedback: Heating for the tent is provided solely by the wood-burning fire in the living area. (There are heated blankets on the bed for bedtime) The website says that firelighters are provided, which they weren't. Getting the fire working without firelighters was quite difficult, and on our second day we trekked into town to buy some. If the owners could ensure there are some before a visitor arrives that would be great. The fire came with no instructions, and our fire kept going out within minutes. After some trial and error It turns out there are two push/pull levers under the fire door that controls air flow. Instructions would have been very useful. When you're busy trying to unpack and get settled (at night in the cold), you don't want to faff with trying to get a fire going. The website says that cooking oil is provided for guests, and yet there was no cooking oil. We would have happily brought our own had we known, but before we could cook our morning breakfast another trip into town was required to buy some oil. I was awakened at 1am to find couple of creatures with tails (mice?) on the kitchen side munching away at the packaging to food we had wrapped up. In the middle of a forest in a tent, its totally understandable that furry friends are going to be attracted to what you have brought with you. It would be useful to have a sign up saying to keep all food in the fridge or bread bin and to empty the bin before going to bed. Also, to wipe down the work surfaces each morning as we had (mouse?) droppings to wipe away. As suggested, we did call the number given on our booking confirmation in the hope of speaking to someone at the venue but it just rang off, and nobody tried to call us back. Ladies, bring your own hair dryer as one isn't provided.

Chilled weekend

We spent a night in the Bishy Barney Bee shepherd hut and loved it! The outside bath made it for us, absolutely perfect way to relax while looking out at the trees. We had a few walks nearby and loved sleeping in the hut, so cosy. Will definitely be back!

Response from Thompson Hall Retreat

Thank you Helen, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay! We can't wait to welcome you back soon :)

Relaxing in comfort

A lovely little place that really feels far away from the rest of the world. Peaceful and lots of wildlife to spot, an owl came to say hello one evening whilst we were there. On once the skies cleared we had an amazing view of the stars. The hut contains everything you need for a long weekend including a super comfortable bed, we both slept really well. We visited the Chequers pub in Thompson a couple of times and couldn't ask for a friendlier welcome. Highly recommend a hike along Pingo trail, beautiful sights and so peaceful, we never saw another soul, it really is a hidden gem. Even the moment that the combine harvester passed in front of the hut was a bit of a treat, makes you appreciate the work that goes into putting food on the table (all be it noisy and dusty for a little while). Thank you for a lovely stay.

Stunning location

We have just stayed for three nights at the firefly shepherds hut. The spa area was phenomenal and we booked for a massage which we can quite honestly say was a best massage We have ever had. Beautiful tranquil location would definitely recommend.

Response from Thompson Hall Retreat

Hi Caroline,
Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback. We are so pleased you enjoyed your massage and will pass this onto Kara. We hope to welcome you back in the future. Please get in contact as we would love to offer you a discount on your next treatment :)

A fabulous place to celebrate

We had a two night stay to celebrate 30 years of marriage. It was relaxing and exciting, evening were spent in the luxury of firefly retreat and then the days were spent exploring the local area - a bike ride in a thunder storm! The spa provided a chance to recoup and rest tired limbs. We really enjoyed our stay, we think that some wild flowers would enhance the environment of the meadow surrounding the two huts and in the spa area a cold dip tube and a foot message trail would add to the experience. Have already recommended Thompson Hall to a few friends.

We had a lovely one night get away at Thompson Hall retreat in Bishy Bee. The outside veranda with outside bath was perfect after going in the hot tub and sauna. The steak, breakfast and chocolate packs were great and we cooked on a bbq. En-suite facilities were great, comfortable bed and serene setting. My husband particularly enjoyed listening to radio 1 in the sauna and pretending he was ‘out out!’ We went to holkham beach the next day, about an hour away but the pingo walking trail close by would have been a lovely (8mile) walk had it not have been 30 degrees and I’d only brought sandels! We would come back again.

Amazing place, amazing walks, just perfect for a peaceful holidays... If you are a dog owner its a place for you :) I really do recommend!!!

The perfect hideaway

I can’t express just how perfect our stay was in the Hartley Hut. It had everything we needed and wanted, the BBQ pack was amazing. We spent our nights by the fire pit listening to nothing around us! But the jewel is the outside bath! Honestly loved it! I’ve come back home more relaxed than I’ve been in a very long time! We are already working out dates to go back again!

Had an amazing short stay

Had an amazing short stay in the dragon fly hybrid pod. It had everything you needed and the bed was very comfortable. We had relaxing nights around the fire pit, which was so peaceful and a great place to watch the sunrise and sunset. The staff were very helpful and polite. We enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra day!

Beautiful and relaxing stay

We had a wonderful stay at the Giraffe Enclosure. It was incredibly relaxing living in nature if only for a few days, particularly enjoying the fire pit and outside areas.

Recommend 100%

A little hard to find but once you find it - you are presented with an idyllic view. We stayed at the whoa stop and added on the extra of spa access. This place is wonderful! They really have thought of everything. I recommend this to any couple looking for a peaceful and romantic break.

Just what we needed!

Wow what a gem, so private and secluded. A little piece of heaven in the forest! Fell in love with Hartley Hut and didn’t want to leave. Such a romantic hideaway. Would highly recommend this place to anyone! With everything that’s gone on over the last 12 months this night away was exactly what the dr ordered! Will definitely go back

Beautiful relaxing break

What a beautiful little place, we stayed in the Hartleys hut, it was so quirky and pretty. We loved the little extra touches, having a bath outside at night and early morning whilst listening to the birds made our stay, The electric blanket, fire and fire pit were much appreciated. We will defiantly be back. Thank you

An amazing romantic-wild experience

It has been amazing spending one night in this place with my boyfriend. The small house where we stayed “the Hurley hut” is so nice and comfortable, in the middle of the woods. Outside there is an amazing hot tub and we spent the night there, under the sky, with a bottle of Prosecco which I ordered before coming . Everything was So romantic and amazing. The day after, in the morning, we went to the outside SPA and we enjoyed the view of the horses from the hot tub. Perfect for couple that want to enjoy the silent, the relax and the perfection of the nature, into the wild. Thank you so much, we recommend this place to everyone.

Perfect retreat from a busy life!

We have just returned from a long weekend in Bishy Barney Bee, and feel completely refreshed. The hut has everything you could possibly need and is sited in an area overlooking a field where we saw deer, herons, pheasants and numerous other wildlife. We felt very covid-safe as everywhere was clean and we checked in and out without seeing anybody! Can't wait to stay again!

Lovely escape from the city

We loved our stay at Dragonfly! It was very tranquil and we loved that is was very Covid-safe. We had contactless check in and out. Staff were available to us if we needed by telephone. Lovely retreat!

A perfect getaway location if you are looking for peace, calm and a bit of luxury

My wife and I recently spent two nights in ‘Bishy Barney Bee’ one of the beautiful shepherds huts at Thompson Hall retreat. We had the best time, the location is tranquil and peaceful, the accommodation is perfectly equipped for a romantic break, the spa area just adds to the feeling of calm and luxury. I couldn’t recommend this place highly enough, every little touch has been considered. I should also add the breakfast and bbq packs are a must if you like meat, its first class! Luxurious Haven

For two consecutive birthdays,I have escaped along with my husband to the peace and tranquility of Bishy Barney Bee at Thompson Hall Retreat. The hut is beautifully furnished, the bed large and comfortable and the wood burning stove makes it so cosy and romantic. We love using the double ended bath outside to wash away the worries of the world and the heater above makes it a real treat. The few extra touches complete the picture of perfection;a bottle of fresh milk in the fridge, some delicious croissants left for us in the kitchen and the warm welcome on our arrival with the offer of staying a little later in the morning if we so desired.......

Beautiful retreat from the world

I've just spent the most amazing weekend here. The hut has everything you need to enjoy this quiet countryside retreat, wood burner, large outdoor bath, kitchen, patio open fire. Also paid the little extra for use of the spa and enjoyed the hot tub under the starts and sauna.

Restful & peaceful

The word retreat says it all. It's down a secluded drive that gives a briefest clue to the peacefulness of it. A perfectly appointed getaway with just what you need for a night or twos time together. Lovely outside verranda with outside kitchen, outside bath was fantastic as the sun was setting on a very wet day. Inside was snuggly with comfy bed, TV, inside kitchen and beautifully done showerroom. Very luxurious and well recommended as an escape. Hardly any noise at night except the local wildlife snuffling about. We'll definitely be back
