Ctra. de Figueres a Olot N-260 Km.60 17851 Maià de Montcal, Girona
A family site in rural Girona, all set around a 15th century Catalan farmhouse.
Let's see – a beautiful setting at the base of the Pyrenees, the perfect location for exploring stunning Catalonia. A bucolic paradise brimming with wildlife and divine countryside views. Interested? You should be.
Set around a 15th century Catalan farmhouse, Can Coromines is a friendly, family-run site in the heart of rural Girona. It’s a spacious place with many different areas to pitch your tent. Take your pick from a nice spot under the shade of a pine tree or upon the lush plane looking up to the imposing panorama of Mont Mare de Deú. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to enjoy this wonderful place. Your host Sara does an excellent job in creating a tranquil, relaxing environment.
Onsite activities are as plentiful as the local bike trials, so whether you fancy a dip in the pool, a beer on the terrace, or a game of table-tennis, Can Coromines has something to offer everyone.
For culture vultures, the charming city of Figueres (an 18km drive) never disappoints. Birthplace of surrealist art icon Salvador Dali, Figueres is home to the fabulous Dali Theatre and Museum. Housing over 4000 pieces of Dali’s work including paintings, drawings, sculptures, the museum is a must for all art lovers.
Many proud Catalans maintain their corner of the country is a little bit closer to heaven than “ordinary” Spain. And with its soaring peaks, glorious countryside and sleepy small towns, it’s hard to disagree.
The Owner Says
Best summer in years
I had no idea the Pyrenees were this cool. We stayed here for 9 days having planned max a week in the second half of August this year. It is family run and we naturally made friends with the owners and staff - all with decent English, intelligent, helpful and chatty. We spent a series of glorious hot days in the pool with our three kids (7, 4, 1), wandered around some of the nearby mountain towns, swam in the lake at Banyoles and clambered and splashed through several of the area's boulder-strewn rivers. Think the criticisms of the pool safety for small kids are nonsense - our lot's favourite pool by far of the summer but as ever you just have to stay right beside a one year old. It does clearly get crowded when full but that seems to be only the absolute peak summer weeks - we were there from August 20 and the balance was great. Could there be some more communal events guys or would that spoil the immensely laid back, urbane and to my mind authentically Catalonian atmosphere? It's only half an hour to L'escala's fabulous beaches, just over an hour to barca, ditch the industrial scale stuff on the coast and come here.
We did nine sites in 17 days by VW van and this was probably our favourite. Stayed three nights. Small, quiet, relaxed, perfect for accessing both Girona and Figueres. Kids can run around unsupervised (mine are six and nine). Pool is lovely. It has local craft beer. The best chicken nuggets mine have ever tasted. Everyone is lovely. Watch for that turning off the N260! You'd never know it was there.
I stayed here with my family for 3 weeks in July and August 2014. We had a wonderful time - this is one of our favourite campsites in Europe. The owners are super relaxed, very friendly and cannot do enough for you. There is nice bar/restaurant which served simple/cheap food, drinks and coffee - also very relaxed and chilled out. There was occasional live music while we were there but it was never intrusive if that is not your thing. The pool is great, large and clean with plenty of sunbathing space around it on the grass. The nearby town of Besalu is very attractive with a good selection of shops, restaurants and bars. It also has a small supermarket which was more than enough for us.
The site is handy for the coast, Pyrenees, Girona and even Barcelona is easy enough to reach for a day trip.
Wish we'd stayed longer...
We spent 3 nights here on our way south but could happily have stayed longer as this is a fabulous site with great facilities. Best showers we've seen as they were large, clean, hot and powerful with plenty of them - well worth the 50c token for 5 minutes. Good coffee and cold beer available on site which made it easy to chill out here. Owner Nash was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. About half hour drive to Girona where we had delicious tapas in the square, well worth a visit. Pitches were flat and as we were off peak season there was plenty of space around us. I can imagine it being a wonderful place for families in the peak season. Followed the directions on cool camping website and ended up in the village rather than on campsite. We should have stayed on the main road and taken the turn after the one for the village - look out for the small camping sign and take the next turning.
We had a great time here. We were slightly preseason so not busy but had excellent service/hospitality anyway! We were given personal attention and help/directions/coffee whenever we needed it. Beautiful area, so much to see and do! Look forward to using the pool and restaurant in season. We look forward to returning.
Not suitable for small children
We had a good time there. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Surrounding cities and local excursions were fine. But i wouldn't recommend the place for families with small children. For e.g. the doors of the fence around the pool are always open, and the shallow parts of the basin is not properly separated from the main pool.
Home from Home
We had four fantastic days, Sal and Mark (with their charming sons) made us feel as if we were at home. Everyone else working there was so helpful, interesting and patient with our kids. The site was full of friendly people and children having lots of fun. It was as described on the website, we had a super time.
Family camping at its best
We spent a blissful three weeks at Can Coromines this summer that made us fall in love with camping. This site has it all: friendly, helpful family owners; a relaxed bar and great restaurant overlooking the children's play area; wonderful, shady pitches; clean facilities and a great pool. Plus it's in an ideal location, close to interesting sites such as Besalu, Figueres and Girona as well as the beaches on the coast, and all within striking distance of Barcelona - an hour and a half's drive away. There's no shortage of day trips - even in a three-week holiday. Our three children loved it, and it was nice to be among like-minded families. Would recommend to everyone we meet, if we didn't want to keep it a secret...
Brilliant family holiday
Back from a brilliant family holiday, one week at Can C, last week in August. Very friendly, welcoming, not too busy. Fantastic pool - great shallow end for our 3 and 1 year old non swimmers, and deep end for newly swimming 5 year old, and for us. Lovely bar and restaurant with terrace overlooking grassy, kids play area with swings, climbing frame and slide in the shade of the trees - I.e easy parenting: watching them charge around, making friends with other kids of all nationalities, whilst we enjoyed a cold beer. We ate there once, and the food was also very good. We stayed in one of the flats because not brave enough to camp this time with a 1 year old - very spacious and clean, great view of pool. Easy days out to Dali museum, local lake, medieval town, unspoilt coast/beaches, gorgeous mountains, and also one v good lunch across the border in Cebere in France. Already planning return - but camping next year. Showers and loos good, washing machine and drying area good. Can't recommend highly enough. A real find.
We have just got home from 5 days at Can Coromines and despite the weather, we have really enjoyed it. The facilities are excellent, very clean and well run. The restaurant is excellent, a great balance between great home cooking (not that my cooking is nearly as good as Sally's) but nothing to rich or pricey that you can't go back every night! The family who run it have got their guests interests at heart, we felt that they really cared that we enjoyed our stay. The restaurant has a play area/swings/babyfoot and table tennis close by so the kids were able to play and just run in when there food arrived. We will definitely go back.
Nice but very very crowded
The staff are nice, the location is good, the facilities too, but oh my, at least in the high season beware the layout of this site. If you like being very close to your neighbours, almost on top of each other, cooking, sitting, in snoring distance, ect, then OK, but this is not a site for tranquility or for those who like a bit of personal space!
We visited this site in May. The owners were extremely friendly, and the site felt like a little oasis! We drank in the bar every night where we were made to feel very special. The icing on the cake for me were the showers, very large cubicle and shower head, and lots and lots of hot water! This is a wonderful site to stay on.
why do we come back again and again?
There must be something special that makes this campsite so nice that we have been back nearly every year for the last 15 years. First with very small kids then with bigger ones, teenagers and now grown up ones. The atmosphere, Marc's attention, Sally's cheesecake... everything makes this place very special to us. Sure we will come again, go shopping in Girona, find (with your advice) a good restaurant near by, stop and have swim in the river for a change from the beautiful swimming pool, play a game of table tennis, have a good coffee in the morning when picking the fresh baked bread. See you next year!
We spend 3 weeks at this camping with our 2 kids (9 & 5 y) and we all enjoyed. Swimming in the pool, playing tabletennis or just reading in the shadow in front of our tent. Also the surroudings are so nice: el Mont (where you can see so far), the lake of Banyoles and Girona are on our list of favourites, not to forget beautiful Besalu. And finally having pizza at the restaurant which was one of the best we ever had! Thanks also for printing our tickets for the Sagrada Familia, we we're in in 2 seconds!
