A tiny family-friendly bell tent glamping site on a smallholding in south-west France

Ever daydreamed of upping sticks and moving to rural France to live the simple life? Who hasn’t? The fields are bigger, the sun shines brighter, the croissants are fresher and the villages are oh-so rustic. Becky and Andrew Brown are two Brits who’ve made the move; swapping London for a smallholding in southwest France where they tend chickens, ducks and their own little brood. But, luckily for anyone wanting a taste of “la vie simple”, they are not just living the dream, they are willing to share it.

Wild Oak Wood Glamping is the latest addition to Becky and Andrew’s smallholding. It consists of just four bell tents tucked among the trees of their little woodland. Each is a spacious six metres and has been kitted out as a sleeping and living space for four – with room for an extra little one or two. It’s definitely been put together with families in mind and the on-site swimming pool, children’s play area and regular craft sessions will help keep kids amused.

Bell tent campers share cooking facilities which include a gas camping stove, a barbecue and a fire pit outside which, added to the homely feel of the place, makes for a sociable atmosphere. While it works well for individual bookings, it’s even better for families who want to holiday together and exclusive hire of the site is an option.

Wild Oak Wood is on the outskirts of a tiny village called Loze, where you won’t find much going on aside from the odd tractor passing by. It’s a place you can switch off, slow down and relax in; where sightseeing consists of exploring rural villages and perhaps popping to see a chateau. Thankfully, freshly-baked baguettes and croissants are provided daily as part of the deal at Wild Oak Wood, so come with a few basics and you won’t need to leave — except, perhaps, to stock up on fresh produce from one of the markets that rural France is famous for. The day of the week will depend on which direction you’ll need to head in to find one but you can rest assured that down here, where the sun shines brighter, the cheese will be riper, the tomatoes will be juicier and the peaches will be sweeter. The simple life par excellence.

Getting There

The site is just over 100km (a drive of around an hour and 30 minutes) from Toulouse Blagnac airport and 80km (a drive of around an hour and 15 minutes) from Rodez airport where car hire is available. From either direction use the D926 to reach the town of Caylus. From there take the D19 towards Loze. After about eight kilometres (just after passing a white stone shelter/public telephone on the right), turn left. Take the first right and then the first right again to reach Wild Oak Wood.
There is no public transport to the village so a car is necessary both to get to the site and to get around while you are staying.
