Never let it be said that the St David’s Peninsula is short of a campsite or two. Indeed, sometimes it feels as if it’s one large campsite. Such is the area’s popularity, finding a field that hasn’t become a temporary village can be difficult, particularly in the school holidays. Happily, Porthllisky Farm, being much smaller than its counterparts and a little off the beaten track, remains an oasis of calm. Indeed, despite being just a mile and a half from Britain’s smallest city (pop. 1800), just about the only sounds here come from passing gulls and the sighing sea. And then there’s the view: a ring of mini-mountains giving way to the stumpy tower of St David’s cathedral. The site is simplicity itself. Just under an acre of grass in a large open field on this potato-and-corn farm is mown to comfortable camping height. At one end there are some bins, while a water tap pokes out of a hedge. There are no loos, but 200 metres away at Porthclais Harbour (NT site) there are public conveniences that never seem to shut. There’s also a very handy tiny café there which serves light refreshments outdoors, run by a very friendly chap called Steve (open daily May to September 10am–5pm ‘and later if the weather’s nice’; 07530 849078). A special new path has been created through the farm to grant access to the nearby Pembrokeshire Coast Path, allowing campers to enjoy a spectacular circular one-day walk taking in the cliff-tops, a hill or two and St David’s.
