Pant yr Hwch Farm

Granted, Lampeter isn't the universally recognised culinary capital of western Europe. (Yet.) But whilst Michel Roux Jr has been perfecting his mille feuilles, Ann Jones from Pant yr Hwch has been cooking up proper grub for lucky campers in west Wales. She's the alfresco Mary Berry, a rural Delia, the Nigella of Llanwnnen.

If you've packed light, then your first port of call upon arriving at Pant yr Hwch should be the farm larder in the old cowshed. Ann makes all manner of tasty treats using home-grown garden produce and nature’s hedgerow treasures. You'll find slowly-fermented sourdough breads, flavoursome lavender cookies, hearty 'cawl' (a traditional Welsh stew), devilishly moist chocolate cakes and home-produced wild damson and apple jam. There is also meat from the farm, local cheeses and Elderflower champagne. And she's happy to impart her knowledge too – join Ann's superb ice-cream course and you can make baked Alaska in the wood-fired clay oven for desert. If you've still got any room left, that is.

Ann and her partner Martin purchased the property in 2008 and spent three years painstakingly restoring the 18th-century farmhouse and barn to their former glory. Admirably, they chose to farm in a traditional manner, as organically as possible, giving their animals the space to enjoy a free-range life, which allows native wildlife to flourish and the farm pond to be frequented by wildfowl.

Kids love to take a farm tour on the back of Martin's tractor. Here they'll discover the farm's flock of rare-breed Badger Face sheep, pigs, donkeys, chickens, ducks and bees. There's also a vegetable garden and an orchard filled with delicious apples, plums and pears, so the plan is for Ann and Martin to become completely self sufficient within the next few years. It's no surprise that Pant yr Hwch has been described by some campers as 'a little bit of heaven at the end of a farm track.'

But the tents are the real icing on the cake. Each luxury safari tent has a decent-sized living space, master bedroom, bunk bedroom, 'cupboard bed' and a flushing toilet, so there's no need for a midnight sprint to the toilet block in the dark. The main focal point is around the wood-burning stove, which sits in the centre of the tent; the ideal place for telling stories as the sun goes down.

Red kites nest nearby and you might be lucky enough to spot a badger on the way back to your tent, or be lulled into a silent slumber by a parliament of tawny owls.

Nearby attractions

Pant yr Hwch is on the doorstep of the Ceredigion Coastal Path, so there are plenty of spectacular walks nearby. Pick a stretch near Llangrannog, then head for a spot of lunch at The Ship (01239 654510). Alternatively, take a walk from  Llanerchaeron (01545 570200), a beautiful 18th-century gentry estate, to the picturesque harbour town of Aberaeron – a pretty Georgian village with pastel coloured houses. Here, you can taste The Hive's famous honey ice-cream whilst taking a stroll along the harbour.

There are plenty of fantastic beaches along the Cardigan coastline. Poppit Sands is a wide stretch of golden sandy beach backed by dunes, on the northern northern end of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. For a little more seclusion, Mwnt beach (owned by the National Trust) is a sheltered cove where seals and bottlenose dolphins are often spotted.

Food and drink

There's a well-stocked honesty shop onsite, but any extra fruit and veg can be collected from The Organic Fresh Food Company (01570 423099) or the Blaencamel Organic Farm (01570 470529), both in Lampeter. Whilst you are there, try the homemade ice-cream at Conti’s Café (01570 422223), or, for something more substantial, the Castle Hotel (01570 422554) serves hearty pub fare and an impressive selection of beers.

The 25 Mile restaurant (01239 623625) in Cardigan is worth the trip; its seasonal menu is exciting and serves poached fish to perfection.
