Outer Bounds

UK Wales West Wales Ceredigion

Outer Bounds Camping, Bwlch y Gwynt, Llanrhystyd, Ceredigion, SY23 5EH

Isolated seclusion with speedy access to coastal walks. Larger shoals of dolphins have been gliding by recently, so get on a boat trip for an up-close-and-personal view.

Outer Bounds describes itself as a ‘small, traditional down-home rural retreat’. It’s a tiny site of six-plus plots among wild land peppered with indigenous willows, oaks, hawthorns and redcurrant bushes. Sheep roam the nearby fields and only one or two passing cars might slip along the road each day. Life really doesn’t get much more rural than this.

A boutique campsite this is not. There are sizeable pitches and a recently built shower block, but so far that’s your rugged lot, although there is now hot water all day during summer, and even electrical hook-ups on some pitches. There are campsite basics like a barbecue and communal table as well as less conventional features like (our favourite) a mini stone circle. Bring a guitar and some incense sticks and, on a starry night, you’ll be in hippy heaven.

There are people for whom this campsite won’t be right. Dog-owners are out of luck – pets aren’t allowed – and older children could get bored. Softies who can’t camp without hook-ups will find the amenities a little basic. But anyone looking for countryside calm, broken by nothing more than fish-and-chip suppers, trips to the beach and birdsong, won’t be disappointed.

I love the place i was lucky to have the place to myself and sunny after having the bad weather. Lovely friendly staff and a friendly cat came to greet me. Nice place it can be tricky to find just keep your eyes open for it and Yes there will be bugs but what can i say there's water/pond/lake near by, but i would recommended going at least once.

wonderful get away

I spent 2 nights with my three boys, aged 10, 8 and 6 and we all loved the place. Spacious, private pitches, in a peaceful, relaxing environment. Showers were clean and hot and the provision for campfires made cosy evenings. Will definitely be going back!

Outer bounds camping

Our family visited this beautiful little campsite as a large group and despite the weather we had a very lovely time. The site is well thought out to provide privacy to each pitch in such a pretty setting. The planting takes you on little meandering walks from pitch to pitch which gives it a magical, hidden feel. With two hot showers, toilets, electric points and a washing machine, all your needs are pretty much taken care of. My favourite aspect, and the lifesaver in the rain, was the large, covered seating area where we cooked, eat and gathered comfortably. The children in our group played on the swings and toys provided were we could see them, right next to our kitchen/dining area and campfire. Serena and her family are the perfect hosts and they've built my favourite campsite!

Beautiful retreat

Aug 5, 2015 by Eve Kirby

I took myself and two fairly grown up children here for a weeks holiday recently. Despite the wet and windy weather at the beginning of the week we had a lovely time here. Each pitch feels cosy and secluded with beautifully planted hedges around each space. We had a fire on all but one night...toasting marshmallows and keeping warm! Serena was very helpful and friendly. The loo's are very clean and the showers were very warm. There's a place to charge phones and devices as well as a washing machine and line to dry clothes and bedding. There's a lovely play area for younger children. There's also a sheltered communal table for rainy days or for larger families to sit together. There's wood on site to buy for fires as well. A real gem of a site if you want somewhere to really get away from it all in gorgeous simple surroundings.

Charming secret garden

This campsite is an absolute gem. It is a labour of love that has been handmade by the owners over the last 10 years. All the pitches have mature indigenous hedgerow surrounding which give you good privacy between pitches. Fresh flowers hand picked by the owner decorate the shower block and communal area. This is a secret garden we were very happy to have found!

Absolutely Marvellous

If you are looking for a bar, entertainment, and the likes of, then this is definitely NOT for you. However, if you are looking for a totally relaxing, peaceful get-away-from-it break, with the sound of the wind and the birds being the only noise, with no pressures, no gimmicks, no frills and just pure tranquillity then get in touch with Serena who runs this amazing gem of a site.

Only 9 pitches, each in its own 'corner', each big enough for most sized tents, each with the possibility of a campfire, most are relatively flat & level.

Showers and toilets are basic but functional.. and its a drive to get groceries, but who cares... its so dammed peaceful.

We loved it... and we will be back.. Thank You Serena for an amazing site.

Simply Fabulous

A campsite with it's very own charm - this is a truly beautiful place with a real natural feel to it. Wake in the morning to birdsong and toast marshmallows on a roaring campfire while spotting stars in the crystal clear sky at night- what more could you want from a camping trip? Something for the kids? We've been going for years now and our boys (5 & 7) have a blast every time playing hide and seek. The site is large enough for young kids to feel they can really explore but small enough for the adults to know they're safe. We've been on our own and with groups of friends and the way the pitches are arranged you get a real feeling of privacy, even when there's several other campers there. The communal play area, covered table and communal fire pit/BBQ provide a good focal point for anyone wanting to get together or play a guitar! Piping hot showers were very clean, as were the toilets and we made good use of the washing machine after several dunkings at the nearby pebble beach in Llanrhystud. The beach is usually surprisingly quiet and is the perfect place to watch the sunset, especially with fish and chips from the great chippy in Llanon. We love the homemade touches to this site which give it a real personal feel- lovely use of recycled wood in the shower block & the crocodile sign for example! We were even lucky enough to be allowed to collect eggs from some local pet chickens! The campsite is down a very small rural road with only one farm beyond it so you get virtually no cars save the odd tractor - A wonderfully peaceful getaway where the only sounds are nature and yourselves! Loads of lovely walks nearby. Aberystwyth is a short drive and has a sandy beach, castle ruins, a traditional pier and even a fernicular! A short drive in the opposite direction gets you to Aberaeron, a quaint little town with the BEST honey ice cream! Llanrhystud is a few minutes drive or a short cycle away and has two general stores where you can get pretty much everything you need. We love it & I hope will continue to do so for many years to come.

Rural nature reserve

Let's not mince our words - Outer Bounds is utterly fantastic.

This is a campsite filled with character. The site itself isn't too large with around 9 pitches. There's a small central car park so campers are requested to park there and walk to your pitch. 2 of the pitches can be accessed by car if you've got a heavy tent etc. These two also have an electrical hook up.

We visited in October 2013 and were the only campers here for 4 nights. You're in the middle of rural Wales here so there's all the atmosphere you'd expect. Sheep and cows in the morning, tawny owls hooting at night and the little ginger cat to bite your fingers!

It's billed as no frills camping but there's a great utility hut with 2 showers (hot water takes an hour or so 1st thing, but it's piping hot), 2 flushing WCs, a washing machine and a basin/sink. What else did you want? Internet you say? well there's that too. tip: Three UK give a 3g signal here too. (Bring a dongle)

One of the best bits is this site is camp fire friendly. There are some old wheels around the site that act as fire pits - just grab one and take it to your pitch. We sat out, looking at the stars (The milky way clearly visible - no light pollution here!), glass of wine in hand watching the flames dance. Perfect. You can buy the logs from Peter and Sue at very reasonable prices.

The site feels hand built - and better for it. There's a communal area to gather if it rains - this is a large canvas cover with a dining table. There's a small play area here too.if you've got kids. It's difficult to imagine a better place for kids to run around - although it was lovely and quiet/secluded for our visit.

In the area around you've got Aberystwyth 25 mins to the North. This is a decent sized market town. If you forget anything go to Charlies store in the center. One of those places piled high with _everything_. To the South we went dolphin watching on the pier at New Quay. 10+ bottle nosed dolphins 100 yards off the quayside and superb cliff top walking.

If you want a - get away from it - type experience with character and atmosphere then this is it. Get in the car and start driving now... it's a fair distance but worth every mile.

First camping trip aged 3

Jul 25, 2012 by Fred and Family

We were the only people there! After driving through storms and floods we made it!, if a day late ( we had rang to explain) and it was worth it! we camped up the top of the site and had great views and a dry pitch! My 3 year old wanted to go camping, his first trip and what a great place! This is a small site and a place to create memories, go visit. We received a warm and happy welcome. This was perfect, birds, sheep that you can hear, lovely planting and trees, swing, slide etc. all lovely and home made, a great big under canvas seating area. Logs for sale and we had a camp fire! (or bonfire if you are three, he loved it!), ( there is a track/ one lane road between the pitches and showers, but it is not used a lot and never caused us any problems.) Two hot clean showers, lovely! and flushing WC’s all kept very clean. Also a washing machine if needed. You may need a birds eye view to find it but you will be very glad you did!
