Blaenwaun

One of the world's best beaches on your doorstep
A bit of local knowledge goes a long way and while a shining summer's day draws all sorts to the beach, it’s knowing exactly where to go that’s the key. With the top spot in The Daily Mail’s list of Europe’s best secret beaches, Mwnt on the Ceredigion coast certainly seems to have the credentials. And a recommendation from Eleri and Iwan Davies shows that the local folk agree. Less than a mile from the secluded cove, they have been running Blaenwaun campsite for years and know the area well. It’s narrow roads, craggy cliffs and seafront footpaths all make for an idyllic Welsh destination and combined with the work put in onsite, Blaenwaun is quite simply a wonderful place to be.

Poised just inland, but with panoramic views of stunning Cardigan Bay, this charming camping and caravanning site offers large grassy pitches and a welcoming family atmosphere. In the main field, numbered spaces are marked out with small white fences and have plenty of room for caravans, awnings and cars (with space still left over), while a separate meadow allows for non-designated pitches and a less formal layout. A playground in the centre is great for kids who need somewhere to clamber, while the surrounding area is free for ball games, flying kites or simply running wild.

Eleri and Iwan live in the main house, adjacent to the site, and their nearby presence allows for an attentive and helpful service. A small shed-like shop in the camping field sells essentials like milk, bread and newspapers (which can be ordered daily), while a fantastic amount of their own farm’s produce is also on sale. Free-range eggs, organic beef and tasty sausages are among the offerings; very reasonably priced and ready to slap straight on the barbie. The animals themselves are also nearby, with a pony and goat grazing in the neighbouring field, ducks wandering freely and friendly pot-bellied pigs who will occupy inquisitive children for hours.

If you do find the animals captivating then walk the pleasant bridleway back to Mwnt beach keeping an eye out for birds of prey that nest nearby. Once there, follow the crescent of sand toward the beaches headland. The waters here are a hot spot for seals and bottlenose dolphins, which are regularly seen throughout the year, and boat tours from nearby Aberporth offer the chance to get an even closer look. If you’d prefer to stick on land then take a drive to the quiet town of Cardigan or head north to New Quay with its quaint harbour, tumbling streets and prim Victorian terraces. Just be sure to return by bed time, with it’s western facing viewpoint and prime position above Cardigan Bay, Blaenwaun is a beautiful place to catch the sunset.

Mwnt Beach is a 0.8 mile walk by the bridleway outside the site, or take the 4 minute drive to the car park. Be warned, those walking descend a steep hill to the beach and the final section from the car park also involves steps. As such the beach does not have disabled access. Dogs are not permitted on Mwnt Beach but those looking for another great walk should hop on the Ceredigion Coast Path (01545 572105) which skirts some of the most beautiful sections of the seafront. Further south, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path (08453 457275) takes in the best of the National Park (08453 457275) and its dramatic coastline, as does the longer Wales Coast Path. By car, beautiful Cardigan (01239 613230) is not far away, formed around a Norman castle which is sadly closed to the public, though nearby Cilgerran Castle (01239 621339) still welcomes visitors, its two massive drum towers dominating the surroundings. North, picture perfect New Quay has a cobbled stone harbour and is a wonderful place to sit in a cafe and enjoy the view. Among it all are the numerous excellent beaches that pepper the coastline.

Food and drink

There is a small shop on site selling basics (milk, bread, and eggs) along with the farm's home produced organic beef, steaks, burgers and sausages. The nearest restaurants are 3 miles away in Gwbert, with The Gwbert Hotel (01239 612638), The Cardigan Golf Club (01239 621775) and The Cliff Hotel (01239 613241). Cardigan (4 miles away) has a slightly wider choice, along with a variety of smaller and larger shops. There is also a supermarket.
